The data used for this analysis was from the first panel of the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS), a survey sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and based on a nationally representative sample of 16,719 tenth-grade respondents in 2002. As one would expect, the measure of student's ability was the only variable that remained significant throughout for both classes and racial groups throughout all statistical models. The difference in the importance of upper class students and lower class is dependent on race. These findings are bolstered by other studies that show parental involvement has been shown to mediate the effects of race and socioeconomic resources in achievement gaps it could also be used as a possible strategy for reducing the achievement gap even in the presence of cultural capital.

While numerous studies have explored factors associated with children's educational achievement, little research fully incorporated multi-level, multi-faceted contexts of child education. More specifically, less attention has been paid to the role of macro-level, policy contexts and their interactions with various aspects of family-level resources. To help fill the gap in the literature, this study investigates (1) the role of various aspects of family-level resources, that is family financial, human, and social capital, in children's educational achievement, (2) mediating pathways among those family-level resources, and (3) the moderating role played by family policy contexts in the relationships between family-level resources and child achievement. This study utilized data from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), large scale survey data containing information on students' academic achievement as well as other contextual information on students, families, and schools for 18 affluent countries. Data on family policy, derived from various other sources, were merged into the PISA. The dependent variable was standardized test scores of reading literacy. To measure various aspects of family-level resources, this study included a series of independent variables such as family financial capital (e.g., family income and wealth), human capital (parents' education), and social capital (e.g., maternal work, single-parent family, sibling size, parent-child interaction). Two alternative family policy measures were included as country-level, independent variables: (1) a series of single family policy indicators, and (2) family policy regimes grouped based on characteristics of family policy settings using the hierarchical cluster analysis. Missing data were imputed using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) multiple imputation. Random-effect multilevel modeling was mainly employed, and, to address potential endogeneity in random-effect modeling, a series of alternative econometric procedures were used including fixed-effect multilevel modeling, the Hausman-Taylor estimator, and the Bartel's approach. Mediating pathways among family-level resources were tested using the Baron and Kenny's approach reformulated for multilevel modeling. Study findings supported a significant role of family financial, human, and social capital in children's educational achievement. Further, family social capital (e.g., parent-child interactions) partially mediated relationships between other family-level resources and children's educational achievement. Findings also supported a positive role of family policy contexts; children in countries with generous family policy perform better in terms of reading achievement, compared to those in countries with weak family policy. Family policy contexts were also found to moderate the relationships between family-level resources and child achievement. For example, the negative impact of maternal full-time work on child achievement was mitigated by availability of generous family policies. Findings from this study provide additional empirical evidence to understand multilevel, multifaceted contexts of child education. This study also provides policy implications for the United States; that is, study findings calls for introducing and expanding family policies building on the current policy measures to enhance children's educational achievement.

I used data from the Parent and Family Involvement in Education Survey (PFI) developed by The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to explore the relationship between visiting cultural institutions and students' academic achievement. I hypothesized that a higher frequency of visiting cultural institutions is associated with achieving higher grades at school. Visits to cultural institutions were used as a proxy for cultural participation; and students' academic performance was measured by self-reported GPA. I find evidence of a moderate positive relationship between cultural participation and student achievement.

Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEA’s Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.
