Book excerpt: This book describes the aetiology, prevalence and frequency of anxiety disorders among college students. An overview of stress among students in developing countries is given, and how it may affect the emergence of certain diseases, such as cancer and diabetes. The effects of disclosure of past stressful events in students is also examined as well as the variables that point to the emotional processing of certain events. This book reviews the coping, mental health status, and current life regret in college women who differ in their lifetime pregnancy status. In addition, the association between gender differences and proneness to depression among college students is examined, including the risk factors (such as anxiety) in the development of depression. Furthermore, the factors that lie behind students' motivated behaviour and academic goals are addressed. Finally, the current alcohol and tobacco use in pharmacy studies is reviewed as well as the ways in which to prevent further alcohol and drug abuse among these students.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Psychology - Cognition, grade: good or B+, Bahir Dar University (Faculty of education and behavioral science), course: Educational psychology, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Emotional intelligence, locus of control, self-esteem, test anxiety and academic achievement among Bahir Dar university students. A total of 89 3rd year Educational and Behavioral science students were selected using convenience sampling method. To collect data four questionnaires (EI, LC, SE and TA) and document analysis for AA were employed. One sample t-test, Pearson correlation, independent t-test and multiple regressions were used to analyze the data. The result of one sample t-test shows that students have better level of EI. The level of students LC is slightly internal as a group. Students had significantly high level of self-esteem and students have low test anxiety level. The study revealed that positive and significant relationship between EI and AA, EI and SE, EI and ILC, in contrast EI and ELC, EI and TA shows negative relationship. All EI dimensions show a positive significant relationship with AA. The independent sample t-test revealed that there was significance difference between male and female students in EI. Meaning males have higher score than females. There was statistically significant mean difference between male and female students. Female students have high level test anxiety than male students. Females are more external in locus of control than males. There is no mean difference between male students in AA and SE. regression analysis shows that LC, SE and TA predict academic achievement. On the other hand, the effects of emotional intelligence on academic achievement were found not statistically significant. Furthermore, the effect of LC and TA on AA found to be negative.

Download or read book Test Anxiety written by Moshe Zeidner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-27 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination stress and test anxiety are pervasive problems in modern society. As the information age continues to evolve, test scores will become even more important than they are today in evaluating applicants for demanding jobs and candidates for admission into highly competitive educational programs. Because test anxiety gen- ally causes decrements in performance and undermines academic achievement, the development of effective therapeutic interventions for reducing its adverse effects will continue to be an important priority for counselors, psychologists, and educators. Alleviating test anxiety will also serve to counteract the diminished access to edu- tional and occupational opportunities that is frequently experienced by test-anxious individuals. As its title promises, this volume provides a state-of-the-art evaluation of the nature, antecedents, correlates, and consequences of examination stress and test anxiety. Professor Zeidner’s cogent and comprehensive analysis of the affective, cognitive, somatic, and behavioral manifestations of test anxiety are grounded in the extensive knowledge he has gained from his own research on the assessment and treatment of test anxiety. This work has also benefitted from the author’s lo- standing and productive collaboration with leading contributors to test anxiety theory and research, and his active participation in national and international conferences devoted to understanding test anxiety, including those convened by the Society for Test Anxiety Research (STAR).

This book was released on 2007 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor academic performance and high dropout rates remain persistent problems among undergraduate college students. The focus of this study was to explore if intrapersonal psychological variables such as attributional style and self-efficacy, as well as extrapersonal variables, such as life stress and campus climate, predicted academic success. Data collection consisted of several computerized surveys administered to 250 undergraduate students. Multivariate hierarchical regressions were conducted to assess any associations between the indicators of success (i.e., postgraduate expectations, college grade point average (GPA), academic satisfaction and retention) and the four aforementioned psychological predictors. This study did not find any significant predictors of college GPA. Furthermore, campus climate and self-efficacy, in conjunction with a more traditional predictor pertaining to student background (i.e., mother's level of education) predicted academic satisfaction. The life stress indicator along with the background variable age predicted total postgraduate expectations, and only age and attributional style for positive events predicted the probability of pausing college. It should be emphasized, however, that the variables in this study explained limited variance in any of the markers of retention and academic success, which is congruent with previous findings. Further research should be conducted in order to explain the unknown variance and identify the factors that influence the academic success of college students in order to implement interventions to improve not only the students' GPA but also to assure that students will complete their career and will fulfill future post-graduate expectations.

Book Synopsis Attributional Patterns and Adjustment in the College Transition by : Yukiko Shiraishi
Download or read book Attributional Patterns and Adjustment in the College Transition written by Yukiko Shiraishi and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cross-cultural study of students' adjustment to the college transition examined whether ability (internal and stable) and effort (internal and unstable) attributions in the context of academic difficulties related to both psychological and achievement-related outcomes among 115 White, 98 Asian American, 86 Black, and 52 Latino students. This study extended Seligman's (C. Peterson & M. E. P. Seligman, 1984) and B. Weiner's (1985) attribution models in two ways. First, measures of both attributional style (generalized tendencies) and attributional response (situation specific) were examined in relation to both psychological (i.e., self-esteem and depression) and achievement-related outcomes (i.e., academic performance and motivation). Secondly, the generalizability of hypothesized relationships was evaluated across the four ethnic groups, as well as Asian Americans and Other non-White students who differed on acculturation (Bicultural vs. Western Identified). Survey data collected from a large Midwestern public university during students' freshman and junior year provided more cross-cultural support for the Seligman than the Weiner model. The analyses of variance (ANOVAs) found both ability attributional style and ability attributional response were generally related to lower levels of psychological functioning regardless of ethnicity or acculturation. However, there were trends among Asian Americans suggesting that acculturation might moderate the relationship between ability attributional style and self-esteem, as well as the relationship between ability attributional response and depression. In contrast to Weiner's hypothesis, effort attributional response was often inversely related to achievement-related outcomes, regardless of ethnicity or acculturation. There were also some distinct findings for particular ethnic groups which have implications for future research on academic stress and coping in increasingly diverse college settings.
