Book excerpt: Author's abstract; This study focuses on the role that Adverse Childhood Experiences play in the lives of today's college students and how Protective Factors can be integrated and enhanced to increase a student's level of Resilience. This descriptive, causal-comparative quantitative study looked at participants' levels of Resilience, what Adverse Childhood Experiences they entered college with, and what role Protective Factors played in mitigating the impacts of those Adverse Childhood Experiences on the levels of Resilience. Results indicated older students scored a higher Resilience score than their younger counterparts. Goal efficacy had the strongest effect on Resilience levels, while planning and goal efficacy explained 36% and 26% of the variability of Resilience, respectively. When discussing the full or partial mediation of the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Resilience, planning and social support both partially mediated the effect. These results indicated the important role Protective Factors play in the success of college students as well as the importance of Resilience as a whole. Implications for practice suggest institutions of higher education should examine how to assist students with increasing levels of Resilience to mitigate the impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences to increase their levels of success while at college. Future research should be conducted on the role of Protective Factors and how they can further mediate the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience.

Book excerpt: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with multiple negative outcomes in young adulthood, including psychological distress, impediment of attaining normative developmental roles, and the presence of physical health risk factors. What is less understood is the relationship between ACEs and positive outcomes, such as wellbeing, and the processes by which it may be achieved following childhood maltreatment. Resilience has also been identified as an important and dynamic process, by which people can overcome early adversity. Accordingly, this research sought to explore the relationships between ACEs, resilience and wellbeing. The first study investigated the pervasiveness of ACEs and gender differences, using a newly revised measure of childhood adversity. The second study explored the effects of ACEs on five domains of wellbeing, and the possible mediation of this relationship by resilience resources. A self-selected sample (N = 1,266) aged between 18 and 35, who had grown up in New Zealand, completed an anonymous online survey consisting of the revised Adverse Childhood Experiences scale, which measured abuse and household dysfunction, along with newly added community level adversities. They also completed the Resilience Scale for Adults - a measure of six dynamic resilience resources; and the PERMA-Profiler - a new measure of Seligman's (2011) five domains of wellbeing, which had not been used before to measures associations between wellbeing and early adversity. ACEs were prevalent, and the most common ACEs were peer isolation and rejection, a family member with a mental illness or who had attempted suicide, and peer victimisation, respectively. Support was found for the use of the expanded ACEs measure, with peer isolation and rejection, and peer victimisation both new additions to the ACE scale. Findings highlighted differences between the genders, with gender diverse people experiencing significantly higher rates of cumulative childhood trauma than females and males. ACEs were also associated with decreased wellbeing across all domains; and this relationship was mediated by resilience and its constituent elements. The resilience resources perception of self, perception of future, and social resources were shown as being particularly important to wellbeing, in those who had experienced childhood maltreatment. The findings implicated resilience as being an important part of the realisation of wellbeing following traumatic childhoods, and emphasised the importance of considering resilience as a multi-dimensional process. The benefits of early intervention from a social ecological approach to resilience are discussed.

Book excerpt: Approximately two out of three individuals have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE) before the age of 18, and one in six have experienced four or more (CDC, 2021). Studies of resilience have examined why some individuals adapt positively in the face of such adversity over others; however, conceptualizations of resilience are often broad or overly reliant on external markers of adaptation. The current study is a secondary analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) and utilizes a more focused conceptualization of resilience in adulthood by splitting it into four classifications: internal, external, dual, and no resilience. The sample includes 3,358 participants (ages 24-34, 51.1% female) who endorsed at least one ACE. Of this sample, 8.1% of participants were classified into the no resilience category, 13.8% external resilience, 17.1% internal resilience, and 61% dual resilience. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between resilience classification and total number of ACEs, type of ACEs (abuse, neglect, household dysfunction), and childhood household income. Findings indicated a positive and significant association between total ACEs and the no resilience and external resilience groups, compared to dual resilience. Analyses specifically comparing external and internal resilience groups found a greater likelihood of external resilience as ACEs increased. Household income showed a small, positive association with external and dual resilience classification compared to no resilience. Looking at ACEs subcategories, abuse was significantly and positively associated with no resilience and external resilience, neglect was positively associated with external resilience, and household dysfunction was positively associated with no resilience and internal resilience (all compared to dual resilience). These findings suggest a process of breakdown of resilience over time as ACEs increase, where dual resilience becomes less frequent, but external resilience, and perhaps internal, remain viable adaptation patterns alongside no resilience. Approaches to intervention aimed at promoting resilience may benefit from considering the cumulative effects of adverse experiences, as well as the unique patterns of internal and external adaptation that could be utilized in strengths-based approaches.

While efforts to decrease children's exposure to these traumatic experiences are beneficial, they are not able to fully eliminate these experiences and do not address how to help children who have already been exposed. Resilience, which has been defined as managing and adapting to significant sources of trauma, has been thought to be a protective factor against the toxic stress of ACEs. While the relationship between ACEs and poor health outcomes has been established, the relationship between resilience and health outcomes is largely unknown. This study seeks to determine the association between resilience scores on a validated resilience questionnaire and health outcomes in adolescents. Looking specifically at body mass index, blood pressure, and depression scores on a validated depression screen we hypothesize that higher resilience scores will be associated with better health outcomes. In addition, we examine the relationship between ACE scores and resilience scores. If this validated resilience instrument is able to help predict health outcomes, this can direct development of intervention programs to build resilience in those living in ACE-heavy environments.

If we understand what is needed to help aid youth in fostering resilience and healing, we can possibly try to prevent these lifelong adverse effects into adulthood. The purpose of this investigation was to understand the experiences of adverse childhood events, and resilience among adults with histories of mental illness, substance abuse, and criminal justice involvement and gather suggestions from these individuals for youth today. Qualitative interviews were done with 7 adults with a history of adverse childhood experiences. All had histories of mental illness, substance abuse and incarceration. Themes from the interviews mapped onto Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Participants reflected on ways in which these needs were not met for them during childhood and adolescence. They provided suggestions for youth today which mapped onto ways youth can meet the top-level needs, towards esteem and self-actualization.

Book excerpt: Background: Research has revealed an important relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) through direct and indirect processes, involving three probable mediators, meaning-making, resilience, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, little is known about how these processes work together to shape PTG. Aim: The current study examines the relationship between cumulative ACEs and PTG through meaning-making, resilience, and PTSD symptoms, in a comprehensive dynamic framework model using path modeling. Method: A sample of 759 undergraduate psychology students (ages 18+) completed self- report measures through a 30-minute online survey that assessed their levels of ACEs, PTG, meaning-making, resilience, and PTSD symptoms. Path modeling inferential analyses were conducted in a cross-sectional study design. Results: Findings revealed a significant direct pathway between cumulative ACEs and PTG, and two indirect pathways between cumulative ACEs and PTG that were negatively mediated by meaning-making and positively mediated by PTSD symptoms. However, resilience was not a significant mediator between cumulative ACEs and PTG. All pathways had a positive association except the associations between cumulative ACEs with meaning-making and with resilience. Conclusion: Experiencing ACEs not only increases the likelihood of PTG in adulthood but this relationship is mediated by meaning-making and PTSD symptoms. This study shows that there is hope for growth for those individuals who experience ACEs and PTSD psychopathology post-ACEs by learning how to create meaning from an adverse event.

Given the current state of virtual communication permitted by technology, contemporary conceptions of solitude describe a state where an individual is removed from opportunities for social interaction. Historical views have emphasized both the good and the bad of solitude for child and adolescent development. For example, spending time alone is thought to facilitate critical developmental skills, including individuation, self-regulation, and achieving a sense of autonomy. This is one example of the paradox of solitude that illustrates the complex nature of solitude and its relations with well‐being. In addition, researchers have further proposed a model of developmental timing effects for solitude, in which non-linear variations are postulated in the implications of solitude from early childhood to emerging adulthood. Such non-linear variations reflect the myriad of factors that could serve to mediate, moderate, and complicate how solitude impacts child and adolescent well‐being.
