We reviewed three approaches to examining this relationship: 1) comparing the college graduation rates of AP and non-AP students; 2) comparing the college graduation rate of AP and non-AP students after controlling for students' demographics and prior achievement and the demographics of their high schools; and 3) examining the relationship between percent of students from a given high school graduating from college, and the school's percent of students in Advanced Placement. We conclude that the percent of a school's students who take and pass AP exams is the best AP-related indicator of whether the school is preparing increasing percentages of its students to graduate from college. The importance of AP exam results indicates the need for schools and districts to pay close attention not only to the quality of teaching in Advanced Placement courses but also to improving the academic preparation of students prior to their enrollment in those courses. Appendices include: (1) Cohort Definitions and Descriptive Statistics; (2) Hierarchical Linear Modeling Analysis; (3) Ordinary Least Squares Analysis With School-Level Data; and (4) Differences in College Graduation Rates Compared with Students Not Participating in Advanced Placement. Because students who take AP Exams can earn college credit while still in high school, it was expected that AP students would have higher four-year graduation rates. Moreover, it was expected that AP students who earned higher exam scores would also have a higher likelihood of graduating within four years compared to AP students who do not perform well on the exam because academic performance across a variety of measures has been positively linked to graduation. Two national samples were used to test these research questions, and the results confirmed a positive relationship between both AP Exam participation and performance with graduation within four years. This relationship was evident even after controlling for relevant institutional- and/or student-level factors. The academic and financial benefits of the AP Program are discussed. Book excerpt: Performance was examined for five cohorts of 1998-2002 Texas public high school graduates through their first year and 1998-2001 cohorts through their fourth year of Texas public higher education. Student performance on college outcomes included (a) first- and fourth-year grade point averages (GPAs), (b) first- and fourth-year credit hours earned, and (c) four-year graduation status. Outcomes were compared across students who varied by three types of APʼ (course only, exam only, and both course and exam) and two types of non-AP (dual enrollment only and other course only) experiences in high school. Phase 1 analyses addressed each of seven AP Exams separately. Within each cohort year and within each cohort related to the specific AP Exam, students in the various AP and non-AP groups were matched on ability (ranked SATʼ score category) and free or reduced-price lunch (FRPL) participation status. Students in each of the separately analyzed AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Calculus AB, and AP U.S. History course and exam groups, for example, significantly outperformed their respective AP course only, dual enrollment, and other course peers on the GPA, graduation rate, and most credit hours outcomes. Phase 2 analyses aggregated AP course/ exam and non-AP experiences, taking into account SAT score category and FRPL status. Students who took AP courses and exams significantly outperformed students who took AP courses only and other courses only on all outcomes in all years and, in general, exceeded AP Exam only and dual enrollment only group performances on the outcomes. They also graduated from college within four years at consistently higher rates than those in the other groups. Results provide strong evidence of benefits to students who participate in both AP courses and exams in terms of higher GPAs, credit hours earned, and four-year graduation rates. The following are appended: (1) Correspondences Between AP Exams/Courses and Dual Enrollment Courses in Phase 1; and (2) Correspondences Between AP Exams/Courses and Dual Enrollment Courses in Phase 2.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of two essays on the impact of state-mandated Advanced Placement (AP) programs in public high schools on student outcomes. In the first essay, I examine the effects of a 2004 state-mandate in Arkansas on student achievement (measured by test scores), high school graduation and dropout rates, and student composition within a school. In the second essay, using the same policy, I study the effects of the mandate on college enrollment measures, as well as high school completion. The first essay examines the effect of a state mandate to offer Advanced Placement (AP) programs at all public high schools on student outcomes. Requiring schools to offer a program they may otherwise not have offered could produce unintended consequences through the shifting of resources or re-sorting among students. To investigate these possibilities, I take advantage of a 2004 state-wide mandate to offer AP programs in Arkansas and use a difference-in-differences estimation strategy to identify the effects of the policy on graduation and attendance rates, student achievement measures, and student composition within a school. Results suggest that on average, the 4-year graduation rate increases by 3.3 percentage points and the dropout rate increases by nearly one percentage point at schools required to comply with the mandate. I find no effect on student achievement (measured by end-of-course exams and ACT scores) attributable to the mandate, however. Additionally, the share of students choosing to attend an out-of-district school increases by almost two percentage points and the percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch decreases by more than three percentage points, which suggests that the policy may have important sorting effects. In the second essay, I build on the work from the previous chapter of this thesis by examining the impact of state-mandated Advanced Placement (AP) programs on college enrollment and high school graduation rates. By extending the analysis to college-going, we can gain a better understanding of how increased rigor in the high school curriculum can affect college matriculation, which itself has important implications for later labor market outcomes. Furthermore, corroborating the estimates on high school completion from the previous work will contribute to the scant existing literature on the causal impact of AP program participation. I use a triple differences estimation strategy that exploits exogenous variation in AP program exposure generated by the 2004 mandate in Arkansas to identify the causal impact of the reform on student outcomes. While robust standard errors suggest the results are statistically insignificant, the point estimates are indicative of positive impacts on the rate of high school completion for nearly all gender and racial sub-groups of students analyzed, and mixed impacts on measures of college attendance by race and gender. I find positive impacts on ever having enrolled in college for females (negative for males) and positive impacts on currently enrolled in college for non-Hispanic white students (negative for non-Hispanic black students).

It was determined in this study that there was a statistically significant relationship between Advanced Placement (AP) student participation and school-wide student achievement and there was a statistically significant relationship between AP student performance and school-wide student achievement in public high schools in the state of Florida in the 2007-2008 school year. Additionally, information was provided for policymakers and practitioners regarding the impact of Advanced Placement on school-wide achievement and the impact on students outside the AP program. While AP participation and AP performance correlated with school-wide achievement, when the population and data were disaggregated into the most affluent, middle-income, and poorest schools, the results changed. For the poorest schools, there was no relationship between AP participation and school-wide student achievement. In the middle income and most affluent schools, however, there was a statistically significant relationship between AP participation and school-wide student achievement. Additional confirmation that Advanced Placement, as part of the overall curriculum, had a significant impact on school-wide student achievement was provided. Further research is necessary to understand the implications of the AP program on schools of various socioeconomic levels.

Results indicated that higher performance on AP Exams was related to higher college performance in the subject area, as well as fewer credit hours taken to bachelor's degree. Most dual enrollment course grades were at a C or higher, and students taking these courses tended to graduate from college in fewer calendar terms than other groups. We examine the relationship between Advanced Placement (AP) and early-career financial well-being using a unique dataset that links the universe of PSAT-takers with their high school AP experiences and financial information thirteen years after high school completion. We find that AP students earn $6,500-$14,000 more per year in their early-30s compared to individuals who did not take AP Exams after controlling for differences in student backgrounds, academic preparation, and access to AP. The largest incremental increase in estimated income - from $82,416 to $88,977 - is associated with students taking their first AP Exam. Early-career income continues to rise with additional AP Exam-taking, but at a slower rate. Presumably because of these income gains, students who take more AP Exams are less likely to miss payments on their student loans, despite holding more education debt on average in their early-30s. Furthermore, our results indicate that AP is a strong predictor of early-career financial well-being across students from many different backgrounds and across all regions of the country. These findings provide suggestive evidence that the benefits to taking AP courses are widespread and accrue well beyond college.
