Book excerpt: This study examined reintegration of Post-9/11 military veterans into higher education as measured by their satisfaction with a private southeastern university. This research was accomplished through the study of the potential relationship between the academic satisfaction and social satisfaction of Post-9/11 military veterans attending a private southeastern university and how they felt about their overall educational experience. The research questions were derived from the Ruffalo Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory which was administered by the university, surveying the quality of student life, and serving as a national benchmark comparison for educational institutions nationwide. This research was a non-experimental, ex post facto correlational design that utilized preexisting data with a total sample size of 86 military veterans who are seeking a degree at the university in this study. The study found student-veterans transitioned from military service with a good degree of satisfaction with their academic educational experiences. This correlates with the happy-productive student theory by Cotton, Dollard, and De Jonge (2002) showing satisfaction with the learning environment can influence performance. However, student-veterans were less satisfied with their social experiences as they transitioned into the civilian educational institution which is explained through the Schlossberg’s transitional theory where student affairs were better prepared to transition traditional students, however less so for servicemembers who may be suffering from wartime physical or psychological trauma. This study provides data that support the importance for a professional military affairs department that is available to evaluate and assist student-veterans succeed in their pursuit of higher education.

Book excerpt: Since 2001, more than five million veterans have used education benefits through either the Montgomery GI Bill or the Post-9/11 GI Bill to attend postsecondary institutions. Along with the unique perspective this group of students brings to a college campus also comes the need for intentional support services to help them be successful. Previous research shows that perception of an institution as a veteran friendly campus matters to student veterans. Research also shows a linkage between satisfaction and perception. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the relationship between satisfaction with support services and perception of an institution as a veteran friendly campus that can inform organizational change as needed. This study used quantitative survey research using the Student Veterans Needs Assessment Survey to answer four main research questions before and after implementation of a one-stop student veteran support services center. Participants answered questions to assess their levels of importance placed on and satisfaction with support services. Participants were also asked if they perceived the institution as a veteran friendly campus. The study was conducted at one institution with 248 student veterans participants. Descriptive statistics, comparisons, correlations, and linear regression analysis were used to answer the research questions. This study revealed four key conclusions: 1) student veterans placed the highest level of importance on financial aid and healthcare services; 2) student veterans were consistently satisfied with financial aid, degree retention/completion, and social acculturation services; 3) the perception of the campus as veteran friendly increased; and 4) there is a positive relationship between satisfaction and perception at the institution.

Military culture starkly contrasts that of college campus culture, and because post-9/11 student veteran research is still in its nascent stage, a need exists to understand how this student population navigates those differences. Using Vacchi' Model for Student Veteran Support as a theoretical framework, the researcher engaged undergraduate post-9/11 student veterans enrolled in an academic major in semi-structured interviews that explored how they made sense of their college experiences. Participant interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed utilizing an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. Three superordinate themes emerged from the data: Becoming an SMC Student, Separations & Connections with Others, and Envisioning the Future. The first two themes illustrate how participants conceptualized their intersectional identities as students and veterans, and how they conceived their interactions with peers (veteran and civilian), faculty, and support services personnel. The third theme represents how the participants rationalize their future opportunities because of attending the Senior Military College. The findings from this study illustrate the academic success of this student group, but also highlight challenges they face interacting with members of the college campus. Book excerpt: Even though post-9/11 veterans now have access to college funding that increases their purchasing power and postsecondary access through the Post-9/11 GI Bill, it is unclear what factors will lead them to pursue a higher education. Historically a majority of veterans will not use their VA education benefits. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' National Survey of Veterans show that on average only 39 percent of all veterans in the U.S. will use their earned postsecondary benefits after leaving the military (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2001, 2010). This is troubling given that earning money for college is one of the primary reasons cited for enlisting in the military (Eighmey, 2006; Woodruff, Kelty, & Segal, 2006; Zinger & Cohen, 2010) and the financial resources are available through various VA education programs. This study examined key factors that led post-9/11 veterans to enroll in higher education. A central focus of this study was to identify key factors that explain why a majority of veterans enter two-year and for-profit institutions instead of four-year institutions after leaving active duty. This study used data from the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS) of 2002, which is publicly available through the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). First presented was a descriptive portrait of veterans who did and did not enter college, as well as a description of veterans at two-year, for-profit, and four-year institutions. Second, a logistic regression analysis was used to answer the first research question, which sought to examine factors related to veterans' college enrollment. Finally, a multinomial logistic regression was employed to respond to the second research question, which explored key factors that predict veterans' attendance at two-year and for-profit institutions compared to four-year institutions. The final logistic regression results showed that veterans' educational expectations and the number of friends who planned to enter four-year institutions during high school (peer plans) were the most significant predictors of college enrollment among veterans, even after accounting for gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), highest math taken in high school, and high school urbanicity. The multinomial logistic regression found that, once veterans' demographic characteristics, high school context, and other factors are controlled for, the highest math taken and educational expectations are the best predictors of enrollment into two-year colleges. Moreover, the multinomial logistic regression results shows that veterans' enrollment into for-profit colleges compared to four-year institutions is also best explained by the highest math courses taken in high school, even after accounting for gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), educational expectations, peer plans, and high school urbanicity. These findings have implications for policy development and practice at various levels. Given the lack of empirical research on student veterans, this area also needs further research.

Book excerpt: Despite high enrollment rates of Post-9/11 U.S. Military Student Veterans in higher education, identification of effective institutional practices that promote successful outcomes is an understudied topic. Although some studies have addressed the transition from military into postsecondary education, more research is needed to improve our knowledge about the experiences of student veterans and how non-profit higher educational institutions, especially student support services, can better help student veterans succeed. Through the lens of university student support staff, as well as student veterans, this qualitative study examines which factors student veterans and support staff perceive in contributing to successful attainment of a baccalaureate degree. For this study, in-depth semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with a diverse group of 12 student support staff and 6 junior and senior undergraduate student veterans at a four-year public university in California. This study applied the Schlossberg Transition Conceptual Model by extending the support factor to include the critical role of four types of student support services: academic, mental health, disability, and career services. Several major overlapping and non-overlapping themes emerged from both student and staff interviews. The most salient theme was the critical role of the Veterans Center. The Center assists student veterans in their transition and adjustment to the university. It plays a central role in providing a physical space, a hub that facilitates connectedness and student engagement on campus and assist with access to vital services and resources on campus, as well as off campus. The assistance of the Veterans Center is critical in ensuring that students receive their financial benefits, as well as verifying their coursework, so they get the courses needed for graduation and meet all GI Bill requirements. Additionally, many of the on-campus services have liaisons between the Veterans Center and their corresponding service department, where identified liaisons help ensure student veterans receive the necessary support when needed. These findings can help inform higher educational institutions, its staff, faculty, and administrators about the best practices in serving the needs of veterans toward successful transition to college, retention, and undergraduate degree attainment, as the number of student veterans in higher education is growing nationally.

Bush noted in his memoir that the military was prepared and ready to start military action in Afghanistan, and two years later the order was given to start Operation Iraqi Freedom. The decision to go to war would alter the lives of thousands of military men and women serving around the nation. These students would then return to fulfill a dream of a college degree. This study investigates the academic performance levels, by measurement of GPA, of military students who utilized Chapter 33 Post 9/11 VA benefits at OSU during the fall 2012 semester. Of the 418 individuals surveyed, 50 veteran students responded and demonstrated that they were capable of performing at academic levels of equal standing to their peers. The statistical results indicated no significance between the military and non-military students, no significance regarding months spent in military service, and no negative correlation between aggregate months served in combat and academic performance. Thus concluding, that military individuals are able to perform at an equal standard of their fellow classmates and meet the expectations set by the programs at OSU.

As such, veterans are entering colleges and universities around the country at an increased rate that is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Despite this growing number of student veterans, it is unclear if university faculty and staff are prepared to deal with their unique needs. This study examined the transitional issues faced by veterans as they leave the military and enter higher education. Moreover, it sought to explore how colleges can provide support services that promote a positive and rewarding college experience for student veterans. Three questions guided this research: (a) How do veterans describe their transition from military to civilian life? (b) What stories do Post 9/11 veterans tell about their experiences in higher education? and (c) How do Post 9/11 veterans describe what faculty and staff can do to better serve their needs. To address these questions, a qualitative narrative research design was applied and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 veterans who successfully completed college following military service. Through analysis of the data, five findings revealed that veterans in college have unique needs that need to be addressed. The findings revealed that while veterans face unique needs when entering higher education, they also possess a maturity level that helps them overcome challenges associated with higher education. Findings also revealed that peer-to-peer support is crucial to veterans successfully completing college. As the number of veterans in college continues to increase, so does the need for university administrators to gain a deeper understanding of their issues.

Book excerpt: The Post-9/11 GI Bill represents unprecedented federal funding intended to aid veterans in furthering their education and successfully making the transition to the civilian workforce. While widely reported that the student veteran population experiences unique challenges on college campuses that may hinder their degree completion, there is little empirical research on their educational outcomes. Research is especially scarce at the community college level. The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables that influence completion and transfer rates among Post-9/11 student veterans enrolled at a Texas community college. The Bean and Metzner (1985) model of nontraditional student attrition served as the conceptual framework for the study and was adapted to reflect the background and defining variables, academic outcome, and environmental variables relevant to the study’s focus on student veterans and the mission of community colleges. Institutional and National Student Clearinghouse data were used in this study. First, descriptive analysis offered a baseline portrait of student veterans who were successful at completing a certificate/degree or transferring and those who were not. Second, independent measures t-tests and chi-square tests of independence revealed age, at time of enrollment, and first-term cumulative GPA were significantly associated to student veterans who earned a certificate or an associate degree, or transferred to a four-year institution. Next, a logistic regression analysis investigated the predictive nature of these variables to a student veteran’s successful completion or transfer. The overall model was found to be statistically significant, ([chi]2 = 12.117, p = .002, df = 2) and correctly predicted 86.5% of the population’s outcome. Finally, the influence of first-term cumulative GPA prompted a linear regression analysis of its relationship, as a dependent variable, with the remaining independent variables. The results suggested a statistically significant negative relationship between minority racial status and GPA, a statistically significant positive influence for full-time enrollment status, and a statistically significant positive effect for older student veterans on GPA. Recommendations for policy, practice, and future research are addressed in this study.

Bean and Metzner's (1985) attrition theory served as the theoretical background of investigation for including variables throughout the seven research questions. The Beginning Postsecondary Student survey (BPS:04/06) served as the population for this study, focusing on first-time beginning veteran and nonveteran students in community colleges and private two-year institutions. Results from independent samples t tests and multivariate logistic regressions revealed that the higher education experience of veterans is not dissimilar to nonveterans. Academic, social, background, and environmental variables all highlighted the commonalities between veterans and the entire two-year population. Both groups of students had similar academic and social experiences, and the same types of environmental stressors such as family and work. The most important factors for these groups, background and defining variables, were also similar. Goal-oriented, female, and younger students were all considered more likely to persist. Racial characteristics of persisters paralleled each group and national trends, where African-American students were less likely to persist and Asian students more likely to persist. Degree expectations and enrollment status exerted the greatest influence for both veterans and nonveterans in this study. Veterans were more likely to persist if they pursued practical degrees and enrolled full-time, whereas nonveterans were more likely to persist if they pursued higher degrees and enrolled both full and part-time. Psychological outcomes were the most prevalent reason for dropout for veterans in the form of stress or personal issues in the BPS study. Implications for veterans and nonveterans as well as two-year colleges are presented.
