Book excerpt: Purpose: This study aims to explore the correlation between students’ self-perception of body image and FITNESSGRAM scores, the relationship between children’s body perceptions and their actual body mass index (BMI), and to see if body image in children affects their physical activity level. Methods: FITNESSGRAM fitness testing protocol and a survey developed for the KidQuest nutrition intervention program by South Dakota State University (SDSU) was used to assess the correlation between students’ (n= 319) self-perception of body image and FITNESSGRAM scores. In addition accelerometers were used to assess the physical activity level of a subsample (n=57) of the students during an in-class physical education period. Results: On average, students perceived themselves as smaller than their BMI suggested. Those who had a self-perception of a larger body weight, scored lower on their curl-up, 90-degree push up, and PACER fitness tests. There was a significant negative correlation between self-perceived body weight and curl-up, 90-degree push up, and PACER fitness tests (pConclusions:Results of this research can inform future work in the area of youth body image and fitness interventions, with body image identified as a strong determinant of weight management and nutritional habits among adolescents. Specifically, fitness testing can be influenced by body image. Although there were no correlations with physical activity level in a regular physical education class and body image, it would be interesting to see if this result changed with longer time allotment.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to test the hypothesis that educational environment and level of physical activity self-efficacy relates to aggregate physical fitness levels in fifth-grade children in a Midwestern metropolitan community. Religious and public school children (N = 184) completed physical activity self-efficacy measures to examine their exercise and barrier status. These scores were compared to a FitnessGram® battery of physical fitness tests involving body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and aerobic capacity to measure their total fitness levels. FitnessGram® scores were converted into a composite score measuring their healthy fitness zone status. Multiple Linear Regressions (R) examined the direction and strength of the linear relationships while the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to test the correlation among the variables. Results of the study showed a significant relationship between educational environment and barrier self-efficacy (r = .158, p = .032) and aggregate physical fitness (R = .264, p = .004). However, school environment and barrier self-efficacy (r = .205; p = .005), had a stronger relationship to higher levels of aggregate physical fitness (R = .282, p = .002) in fifth-grade children.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there were relationships between levels of fitness, body size based on Body Mass Index (BMI), and academic achievement in urban fourth-grade students. Subjects consisted of 877 ethnically diverse fourth-grade students enrolled in one of 14 elementary schools from two districts in a northeastern state. The researcher investigated state physical fitness assessments, body mass index, and standardized state mastery tests in mathematics and reading to analyze existing relationships. Fitness scores were analyzed through the use of raw scores as well as health-related fitness zones, while academic mastery test scores were divided into five categories, as well as raw scores. When fitness data were analyzed there appeared to be a strong relationship to academic achievement. The analyses of both mathematics and reading scores results showed that as the percentage of fitness tests passed increased, so did scores. More specifically, students who passed more than two-thirds of the tests scored significantly higher on both mathematics and reading. Most of the analyses used were analyses of variance (ANOVA) and subsequent post-hoc tests to examine differences in academic performance based on the percent of fitness tests passed. In addition, multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relative contribution of each fitness component to the mathematics and reading scores. Based on these results, one could conclude that the relationship between academic achievement and levels of physical fitness is of extreme importance. According to the results of this study, advocating the promotion of both physical activity and physical education programs as a way of increasing academic achievement in students is justified. As the pressure on public schools continues to rise to improve academic achievement and meet the demands placed on them by current legislation, all too often cuts are being made to physical education programs and time spent on improving the health, wellness, and fitness levels of our students. As students continue to become unfit and overweight, understanding the relationship that this has on academic achievement is critical.

The researcher used a mixed-methods research design. The general population for this study was composed of students at one of the district's intermediate schools. -- The sample included 680 students from a small, suburban intermediate school (Grades 4 [N=231], 5 [N=218], and 6 [N=231], 337 males and 343 females). The school is located in a suburban area near a large city in the southeast. The students from the school described themselves as White (71%), African American (16%), Hispanic (7%), Asian/Pacific Islander (2%), Multi-Racial (4%), Economically Disadvantaged (39%), Limited English Proficient (2%), Students with Disabilities (17%), and Academically Gifted (26%). -- Participants were weighed and measured to establish valid BMI. The physical education teacher took all of the measurements. Academic achievement was obtained using district benchmark test results and report card grades. Tardies, in-school suspensions, and out-of-school suspensions for the first quarter of the 2012-2013 school year were also used. Reading and math grades for the first 9-week grading period were collected by the school data manager. District benchmark data were collected by the assistant principal. Data from physical education classes measuring student stress and physical activity were collected and coded with each student's number by the physical education teacher. Data collection included interviews with teachers to determine teacher perceptions regarding childhood obesity, stress, physical activity, and the relationship these have with academic performance. -- Based on BMI classifications for age and sex, nearly 40% were either classified as underweight (n=39), overweight (n=86), or obese (n=118). A significant correlation existed for academic achievement between BMI and language arts grades, math benchmarks, and science benchmarks (for fifth grade only). There was also a significant correlation between BMI and stress levels for students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. No other significant differences were discovered between BMI, academic performance, and physical activity levels.

Due to No Child Left Behind and the mounting pressures to reach Adequate Yearly Progress, many school officials view non-assessed activities like physical education and recess as unnecessary, consequently creating a case for the elimination of any subject that is not directly measured through standardized testing. Finding a link between fitness and academic achievement may cause educational leaders to reevaluate time spent during the school day. Data was collected for 113 students during the 2008-2009 school year by using the FitnessGram, STAR Reading and Math Percentiles, and Grade Point Averages (GPA's). Through multiple regression, the researcher found statistically significant relationships between physical fitness and two of the three measures used for academic achievement: STAR Math Percentiles (p = 0.0063 0.05; R = 0.26 0.195) and GPA's (p = 0.0124 0.05; R = 0.23 0.195). Therefore, the hypothesis was accepted, validating a link between fitness and academic achievement. This study does not prove causality; it is more probable that physical fitness and academic achievement influence each other in ways that are still vague.

Abstract The interest in musculoskeletal fitness and its overall impact on health has been increasing in the last decade. The Institute of Medicine (2012) report called for the addition of several muscular fitness tests to national surveys of youth health-related physical fitness and to fitness test batteries in schools and other educational settings. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among various muscular fitness tests and health outcomes in youth. Methods: Participants included 49 boys and girls aged 9 to 14 years. A series of muscular fitness tests and tests of health outcomes were completed in two test sessions. Muscular fitness tests included the standing long jump, vertical jump, upper body power throw, total body power throw, and handgrip strength. Handgrip strength was expressed in absolute terms and allometrically scaled to a power of 0.67. The health outcomes examined were aerobic capacity, body composition, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and physical activity. Aerobic capacity (VO2max) was directly measured during a maximal treadmill test. Body composition (percent fat) was assessed with the BODPOD. Blood pressure was measured via auscultation after 5 minutes of seated rest. Physical activity was quantified as minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) from 7-day accelerometer measurement. Bivariate correlations were calculated to examine the relationships among fitness tests of strength and power and health outcomes. To control for the impact of body mass index (BMI) and age, partial correlations were calculated among fitness tests and health outcomes controlling for BMI z-score and age. To examine relationships among fitness tests and health outcomes from a criterion-referenced perspective, participants were categorized into both the aerobic capacity and body composition Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) and Needs Improvement Zone (NIZ) as defined by FitnessGram℗ʼ. Effect size (ES) estimates were calculated with Cohen's delta to examine the size of the difference between the HFZ and NIZ groups on the fitness test variables. Results: SBP and VO2max were moderately correlated with several fitness tests, including total body power throw (r = .37, -.28), upper body power throw (r = .33, -.31), and dominant (r = .44, -.33) and nondominant handgrip strength (r = .37, -.34). Percent fat was moderately correlated with the standing long jump (r = -.45) and vertical jump (r = -.50). The correlation between percent fat and handgrip strength was close to zero when handgrip strength was expressed in absolute terms. Moderate correlations were found between percent fat and handgrip strength when handgrip strength was allometrically scaled for body mass (r = -.50 and -.48). When partial correlations controlling for BMI z-score and age were calculated, generally a similar pattern of correlations was found, except that the partial correlations among SBP and the throwing tests and absolute handgrip strength were lower than the bivariate correlations. When the HFZ was defined with aerobic capacity standards, the HFZ group did better on the standing long jump than the NIZ group (ES = 0.45). However, medium effect sizes demonstrated that the NIZ group did better than the HFZ group on total body power throw (ES = -0.42), upper body power throw (ES = -0.59), and absolute handgrip strength (ES = -0.48, -0.39). Differences in the vertical jump and allometrically scaled handgrip strength favored the HFZ group over the NIZ group, but these differences were generally small (range of ES = 0.16 to .32). When the HFZ was defined with body composition standards, effect size estimates revealed large differences between the HFZ and NIZ groups favoring the HFZ group for standing long jump (ES = 0.84), vertical jump (ES = 1.06), and allometrically scaled handgrip strength (ES = 1.30, 1.42). Small to medium effect sizes were found for total body power throw (ES = 0.26), upper body power throw (ES = 0.19), and absolute handgrip strength (ES = 0.36, 0.43) favoring the HFZ group over the NIZ group. Conclusion: Results demonstrated moderate levels of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced evidence that the tests of musculoskeletal fitness used in the current study are health-related. However, findings also indicated that the significant relationships between these musculoskeletal fitness tests and health outcomes are highly influenced by body composition.

The primary aim of this study was to clarify specific relationships among cardiorespiratory endurance, academic achievement, gender, and poverty in order to help guide school policy. The secondary aim was to use detailed findings from this study to make specific recommendations to stakeholders in the school district to change school programs and policies toward increasing physical activity for specific student populations. Descriptive, correlational, and regression analysis were performed to analyze the relationship among fitness, academic achievement, gender, and poverty. Results demonstrated that students from low-poverty schools generally outperformed students from high-poverty schools in all measurements of fitness and academic achievement. Main effects of gender and poverty were seen on academic achievement and cardiorespiratory endurance, though the effect of poverty was much stronger than that of gender. Positive correlations were demonstrated between fitness and academic scores among the full participant group. Fitness was a significant predictor of math and reading across both poverty levels, though generally stronger in low-poverty schools. The strongest relationship between fitness scores and academic achievement was found with math scores for girls from high-poverty schools. Book excerpt: This study sought to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), physical fitness, self-efficacy, and their possible prediction on scores from the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) for eighth grade students in north Georgia. The participants were 183 eighth grade students in three north Georgia middle schools enrolled in physical education during the fall of 2013. Scores from the students' BMI, FitnessGram®, General Self-Efficacy Test (GSES), and results from the Georgia CRCT were compiled and analyzed to give a better understanding of their predictive relationship. Students complete CRCT tests every school year between third and eighth grade, and these scores were gathered from the sample population during the 2013-2014 school year. In the fall of 2013, students completed the GSES (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995), which includes questions that measure extraversion, neuroticism, action orientation, hope for success, and fear of failure. Assisted by trained physical education teachers, all physical education students recorded BMI scores and FitnessGram® results. This quantitative correlational design determined the relationship between the variables BMI, fitness, self-efficacy, and academic success as measured by the Georgia CRCT scaled scores on the Reading, Language Arts, and Math tests. Multiple Linear Regressions (R) examined the direction and strength of the linear relationships. Results indicated that three predictor variables (aerobic capacity, curl-ups and push-ups as reported from FitnessGram®) explained a significant prediction on Reading, Math, and Language Arts Georgia CRCT test scores for eighth grade students in north Georgia. In addition self-efficacy predicted a significant prediction on the Language Arts Georgia CRCT test scores.
