But to fear such danger is to assume that the Bishops would be Incapable or unscrupulous men. Such an assumption would be an undeserved re ection on the ministry of the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1887, Vol. 34 IT has been thought proper to insert the following addresses in this review, because Dr. Nevin was its first editor. The review was called into existence in the early days of the history of our institutions at Mercersburg. The founding of the first college and seminary was an event of great significance for the Reformed Church. It naturally called forth a great deal of interest throughout the church. These institutions were to be come both the centre and exponent of her life and spirit. It soon began to appear that the church had a life as well as a history of its own which could not be a mere copy of any other church. It was necessary not only to develop a theology that should fitly represent the historical life and faith of the church in whose interest especially these institutions were founded, but also a system of thought or philosophy that would mould the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1891, Vol. 38 To say that we opened the book with many misgivings, is to say but little. We had conceived a decided prejudice against the writer. We had gotten the impression that he was a cold and heartless rationalist. A chilly fear stole over os lest we might be doing worse than wasting the time devoted to him. There was reason for this, for as he tells us himself, hints had been thrown out that he was bordering on atheism. One critic had gone so far as to ask him, what would be the title of the book in which he would advocate the doing away with Christ ianity? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, Vol. 42 IT was a happy thought that with the exposition of the world's intellectual and industrial life, in connection with this celebration of the fourth centennial of the discovery of America, there should be joined also an exposition of the nature and character of the various religious organizations of the world, and especially of those of this country. And it is a happy co incidence that this exposition occurs during the present year, during which we of the Reformed Church are celebrating the centennial of our independent existence in this country, when it is particularly fitting that we should give an account of our selves and of our standing as a Christian denomination, both to ourselves and to the religious world around os. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1890, Vol. 37 IN entering upon the science of Ethics, which we may define in most general terms the science of the Good, we pro pose as an Introduction a consideration of humanity, viewed as general and individual. As man is the subject concerned in this science, particularly in reference to his ethical nature, it is highly important, as throwing light upon the whole theme, to have a right conception of what he is in his relation both to the world of nature below him and to the spiritual world above him, to both which he is organically joined, both in his generic and individual life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, Vol. 32: October, 1885 The life and wisdom of Socrates may be studied from two points of view: The man who has taken rank in presence of the pagan and Christian world as an original thinker and a profound philosopher, if not as the wisest teacher of that extra ordinary age, is directly related to Greece, to the life of his nation, and to the status of religion, philosophy and civilization in the bosom of which was developed his singular history. Wrought upon by the plastic forces of his times, and in turn acting upon all classes of society by his peculiar habits, his rich ideas and novel method of instruction, he gave an impulse to the earnest search after wisdom, which moved not only his own na tion for centuries but took hold of the Christian church in its earliest periods, and has been stimulating and modifying the philosophic inquiries of every Christian nation. Such a char acter is worthy of patient study on his own account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, Vol. 43 Both the epic and the drama demand that the individuality of the poet should vanish behind the scenes he describes, seeing through another's eyes, thinking through another's brain, and speaking through another's mouth. This is possible to the Aryan, with his self-forgetting interest in the external world; it is not possible to the Semite, who, like the child, views the world in the light of the feelings swaying him at the moment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Quarterly Review, 1884, Vol. 31 The criticism and higher criticism of our day with all their knowledge and philological wisdom fail to bring to us the bless ing of certitude. The cause of. The failure is obvious. The Bible is put in the category of classical authors, and it is studied just as in our colleges the students learn Latin and Greek, as a dead language. They may graduate with the highest honor and they may appear very learned among as common folk, but place them in the society of those whose native and diving language is the Latin or Greek, and they at once become owl-like. The Christology of our church whose language has become as familiar to some of us as household words, is a nearer approach to the true idea. According to its teaching the Bible, the ia spired word of God, takes its character from the personal word. Christ is in fact the inspiration of the Bible. Just as in the birth of our Saviour into the world the Son of God became the Son of man and yet continues to be very God in personal union with humanity so by the inspiration of the sacred Scrip tures has the absolute word, the Logos, become the word of man, and yet continues to be the word that was with God and is God. He is in the entire fulness of the revelation, the Alpha and Omega of the Bible, and every word in it is His word. Under this objective view it is certainly perfect, full and complete. In this sense also it is the completion of the other wondrous form of the divine self-manifestation in the great book of nature. Here Christ is also the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Viewed as a temple He is its foundation, its chief cor ner-stone, and the entire fulness of its inner glory. But the natural is complete in the supernatural, and as the spoken word of God it is also complete in Him. Hence the natural revelation and supernatural are but a twofoldness. The two great words of Jehovah, the one spoken when the worlds were rolled into being, and the other by the ancient prophets, and in these last days by the only begotten Son of God, are one and the same. Rightly understood, therefore, their teachings cannot be contradictory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From among all other persons He had chosen Abraham to be the founder of a holy nation; in Abraham, then in Isaac and Jacob, Jehovah had chosen Abraham's descendants. He had loved this people, multiplied their numbers, directed their history, delivered them from bondage, defended them against enemies, and subjected them to moral and religious discipline, as an earthly father loves his children, trains them, and supplies their needs.
