Houghton, that it would 'be a major contribution to the religious needs of the present age, and that it [would] lead to the strengthening of the foundations of a wonderful God-given heritage of truth'. In many ways there has been such a strengthening. Renewed interest in the Reformation and the study of the Reformers' teaching has brought forth much good literature, and has provided strength to existing churches, and a fresh impetus for the planting of biblical churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lollardy and the Reformation in England, Vol. 1: An Historical Survey Moreover, I have not bound myself to the form of a progressive historical narrative. I have called the work an historical survey, not a history; for I have felt it necessary at times to glance backwards and forwards, and even to repeat myself to some extent. Whether I could have got all I had to say otherwise into a more artistic form, I am not altogether sure. The significance of great movements seems to require a good deal of restatement to do it justice; and a condensed general survey ought, I think, to assist the understanding of a detailed account. Yet perhaps the conditions under which I have been compelled to work are answerable to some extent for repetitions which might have been avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters. Book Synopsis Beliefs and the Dead in Reformation England by : Peter Marshall
Download or read book Beliefs and the Dead in Reformation England written by Peter Marshall and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-07-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of one of the most important aspects of the Reformation in England: its impact on the status of the dead. Protestant reformers insisted vehemently that between heaven and hell there was no 'middle place' of purgatory where the souls of the departed could be assisted by the prayers of those still living on earth. This was no remote theological proposition, but a revolutionary doctrine affecting the lives of all sixteenth-century English people, and the ways in which their Church and society were organized. This book illuminates the (sometimes ambivalent) attitudes towards the dead to be discerned in pre-Reformation religious culture, and traces (up to about 1630) the uncertain progress of the 'reformation of the dead' attempted by Protestant authorities, as they sought both to stamp out traditional rituals and to provide the replacements acceptable in an increasingly fragmented religious world. It also provides detailed surveys of Protestant perceptions of the afterlife, of the cultural meanings of the appearance of ghosts, and of the patterns of commemoration and memory which became characteristic of post-Reformation England. Together these topics constitute an important case-study in the nature and tempo of the English Reformation as an agent of social and cultural transformation. The book speaks directly to the central concerns of current Reformation scholarship, addressing questions posed by 'revisionist' historians about the vibrancy and resilience of traditional religious culture, and by 'post-revisionists' about the penetration of reformed ideas. Dr Marshall demonstrates not only that the dead can be regarded as a significant 'marker' of religious and cultural change, but that a persistent concern with their status did a great deal to fashion the distinctive appearance of the English Reformation as a whole, and to create its peculiarities and contradictory impulses.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 4 Who would suppose, for instance, that while Burnet was yet alive, he had been admonished of an error into which he had fallen, in speaking of the Council of Trullo, (or in T ratio as it should rather be) as a council holden in the fifth century, whereas it took place, in reality, not till the very end of the seventh, or beginning of the eighth century? Still however the original mistake has been repeated again and again in the text, in various editions, and the correction reserved for the addenda or appendix at the very end of the work. In the present edition the text will be found to be corrected as it should be, and the correction sent to the author, omitted.
