Book excerpt: Wars, hate, bloodshed, and savage events started in Iraq and the Middle East more than 1,400 years ago, long before the discovery of America and the establishing of the United States of America. The hate culture had been the real problem in the Middle East for hundreds of years. Certainly it is not the USA, even in the case of the Arab-Israel conflict in modern history. It is well-known that the various American administrations tried to find a peaceful end to this conflict. Unfortunately, the Arab leaders always give the public an impression that they are very close to defeating Israel, and they put the blame for not doing it on the USA. The Arab leaders and the media ignore that the Israelis have had nuclear weapons since the '60s. Only a naïve person would think that the Israeli people will follow the steps of the crusaders by boarding ships and leaving the Middle East. The Israelis will not keep their nuclear weapons in boxes and leave, asking the Arab leaders to dust them occasionally. They will use them to defend their existence, and a new map for the Middle East will emerge. The Arab government officials still cannot see that Iran-Syria and its associates in Iraq and Lebanon are the enemy and the real threat to them and the whole world. The Iranians used thousands of twelve-year-old Iranian Muslim children to walk through the mine fields to clear the way for the regular Iranian military forces during the Iran-Iraq war. Also, they used chemical weapons, political assassinations, and international terrorism. The hate culture directed toward Israel along with the corruption, oppression, and all other aspects of the hate culture cloud the judgment of the Arab officials and the public.

In Dennis Alan Kasten's touching memoir, however, the personal journey of a gay man in modern America is tenderly documented and reflected upon with startling honesty and poignancy. His struggles, his triumphs, his joys, and overall, his love of music-especially the piano-are all shared as the author takes us through his life and teaches us that the true meaning of our existence is to find the rainbow within: We must learn to celebrate our individuality, our special gifts and talents, and our uniqueness as someone specially created by God. This tale is that of a journey of hardships, love, loss, discrimination, betrayal, grief, fortitude, and above all, enduring hope.

Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. Book excerpt: This memoir contains many fascinating vignettes about pre-war childhood in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas, a child's-eye-view of the lost world of East European Jewry. It tells the tormented story of the Kovno ghetto as seen by a youngster whose father was a leading figure in the medical life of the ghetto. The author then recounts the long, harsh journey of entering the gates of Dante's Inferno into the whirlpool of the Holocaust - to Stutthof and Dachau - and moves on to describe his liberation. The author also provides a full and fascinating focus on the post-war years: recovery, organizing education in Italy, and the struggles of starting a new life in the United States, including the high point of obtaining the release of the author's parents from the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. Jack Brauns has written a most personal and engaging tale. Not only is it a powerful factual narrative, but it is also an uplifting one that rises above the cruelties and savageries of the Holocaust, and is full of hope.

Book excerpt: In Pet Projects, Elizabeth Young joins an analysis of the representation of animals in nineteenth-century fiction, taxidermy, and the visual arts with a first-person reflection on her own scholarly journey. Centering on Margaret Marshall Saunders, a Canadian woman writer once famous for her animal novels, and incorporating Young’s own experience of a beloved animal’s illness, this study highlights the personal and intellectual stakes of a “pet project” of cultural criticism. Young assembles a broad archive of materials, beginning with Saunders’s novels and widening outward to include fiction, nonfiction, photography, and taxidermy. She coins the term “first-dog voice” to describe the narrative technique of novels, such as Saunders’s Beautiful Joe, written in the first person from the perspective of an animal. She connects this voice to contemporary political issues, revealing how animal fiction such as Saunders’s reanimates nineteenth-century writing about both feminism and slavery. Highlighting the prominence of taxidermy in the late nineteenth century, she suggests that Saunders transforms taxidermic techniques in surprising ways that provide new forms of authority for women. Young adapts Freud to analyze literary representations of mourning by and for animals, and she examines how Canadian writers, including Saunders, use animals to explore race, ethnicity, and national identity. Her wide-ranging investigation incorporates twenty-first as well as nineteenth-century works of literature and culture, including recent art using taxidermy and contemporary film. Throughout, she reflects on the tools she uses to craft her analyses, examining the state of scholarly fields from feminist criticism to animal studies. With a lively, first-person voice that highlights experiences usually concealed in academic studies by scholarly discourse—such as detours, zigzags, roadblocks, and personal experience—this unique and innovative book will delight animal enthusiasts and academics in the fields of animal studies, gender studies, American studies, and Canadian studies.
