Book excerpt: Winner of the André Simon Food Book Award 2020 Fortnum & Mason’s Awards, shortlisted in ‘Food Book’ category (2021) "Caroline Eden is an extraordinarily creative and gifted writer. Red Sands captures the sights, tastes and feel of Central Asia so well that when reading this book I was sometimes convinced I was there in person. A wonderful book from start to finish." Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads "Caroline Eden, whose book Black Sea was showered with awards, is on the road again, this time travelling through the heart of Asia. It’s not your usual cookbook, it’s more a travel book with recipes, the recipes acting as postcards which she sends as she meets new characters, most of them involved with food... Eden travels quietly and lets you in on every encounter and every bite. A moving... as well as a fascinating read." Diana Henry, Telegraph "Red Sands follows in the footsteps of Caroline Eden's previous volume Black Sea. Both are pleasures to read, triangulating journalism, literary writing, and cookbookery. The recipes are part of the reporting, and Eden describes them as edible snapshots." Devra First, Boston Globe Red Sands, the follow-up to Caroline Eden’s multi-award-winning Black Sea, is a reimagining of traditional travel writing using food as the jumping-off point to explore Central Asia. In a quest to better understand this vast heartland of Asia, Caroline navigates a course from the shores of the Caspian Sea to the sun-ripened orchards of the Fergana Valley. A book filled with human stories, forgotten histories and tales of adventure, Caroline is a reliable guide using food as her passport to enter lives, cities and landscapes rarely written about. Lit up by emblematic recipes, Red Sands is an utterly unique book, bringing in universal themes that relate to us all: hope, hunger, longing, love and the joys of eating well on the road.

Fleeing a life of abuse, Sheri climbs aboard a mail-order mate spaceship bound for a distant station, but never arrives… Fate intervenes and her trip takes a quick, deadly turn when she crashes on the planet Atera. She’s surrounded by endless sand dunes, dangerous creatures, and alien beings that remind her of Earth lizards. But one particular lizard hardly leaves her thoughts—a sexy, two legged, muscular male bent on protecting and caring for her at all costs. Drazan is a fierce warrior, the strongest Ateran of the Red Sands, he rules his dunes with an iron fist and sharp sword, and is honor bound to face all challengers to his position. During one of these battles something… strange… happens. Fire rains from the skies and a strange black metal box filled with females crashes to the sands. All thoughts of fighting are lost to the allure of these odd humans—especially one deliciously curvy female who stirs his blood. Now he finds himself with dark yearnings, strong need, and a hardness between his legs that he’s never used before. With Sheri consuming his thoughts, Drazan may have forgotten about his last challenge but his opponent’s brother hasn’t. Now he’s determined to see Drazan suffer… even if that means killing Sheri.

Book excerpt: In the desert outside El Paso stands an aging drive-in movie theater named after the unusual patch of rust-colored sand on which it was built: the Red Sands. Twenty years ago it was a state-of-the-art cinematic oasis; now, in the summer of 1982, it's a dilapidated relic, host mainly to B-list exploitation movies, Friday-night drunks, local trailer-trash, and a shady cast of employees. But during that same extraordinary summer the Red Sands Drive-In will undergo a brief renaissance, brought on partly by the efforts of three "square peg" high-school kids, and partly by the release of the popular movie E.T.-The Extra-Terrestrial. In the process they will come to know the drive-in's owner, whose past holds more than one terrible secret, and they'll be drawn into a feud between him and a rival businessman. What follows is more than any of them bargained for, including a showdown with a major high-school bully, an unofficial "exorcism" on the drive-in itself, a blossoming teenage romance or two and, just maybe, one teenager's learning to make peace with his mother's death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The setting for the story is in the Middle East more than one thousand years ago... when magic was still in the air. The story opens with Prince Malu fleeing for his life on his twentieth birthday. What was supposed to be a joyous occasion with visitors from several nations attending was turned into a terrorist attack by the Caliph of Oman and his men. They disguised themselves as guests and entered the palace. Then just when Malu's father, Ahmed Ben Crishna, King of Armapour was about to present Malu to the representatives of the various countries the attack began. The King is killed immediately. Queen Melina, Malu's mother, helps him to escape. She is killed with an arrow intended for Malu. Malu flees on a horse that was a birthday present from his mother. Malu pushes his mount as far and as fast as he is able, but cannot seem to shake the two relentless pursuers. The chase continues until Malu enters mysterious mountains that are rumored to harbor demons, evil spirits, lions, cobra, and other dangers. The men pursuing him are afraid of the mountains and give up the chase. Malu wanders into the mountains. He has no food or water and the only weapon he has is a saber, a birthday present from his father. Malu is so weary that he dismounts and falls asleep on the hard ground and dreams of all that had happened. He awakens and is attacked by bandits. Just when one of the bandits is about to deliver a killing blow to the unconscious Malu he is shot dead with an arrow seemingly to come from out of thin air. Kumar King of the forbidden city of Shayandra and his men had been watching Malu's progress since he entered the mountains. Kumar killed the bandit. When Malu finally regains consciousness he is surprised to find Kumar and his men have the bandits at their mercy. He is greeted by Kumar and asked to identify himself. Malu tells Kumar that he is the Prince of the kingdom of Armapour. Kumar takes Malu into the forbidden city of Shayandra. Malu meets Helita, Kumar's granddaughter, who later becomes the love of his life. Kumar decides to tell Malu the story of Shayandra. Malu learns that the city and its people have been under a curse for more than a thousand years. The curse fell upon them because a prior king of Shayandra had desecrated the tomb of an Egyptian Lion God. Not long after the tomb was desecrated the Lion God was reincarnated and now this half man, half lion monster, now lives in these mountains with his evil spirits and demons. The curse demands that every hundred years on the anniversary of the desecration a human sacrifice must be made to Lion God or all the people of Shayandra would die. This person must be a first-born of the royal family Shayandra. It was now the time again for the sacrifice and Helita would be the next victim. Kumar then tells Malu that the legend of the curse told of a prince, a savior, who would come some day and break the curse. Kumar tells Malu that he believes that Malu is that prince. Of course Malu does not believe it. Malu has already fallen in love with Helita and cannot stand the thought of her dying; so he agrees to help. He tells Kumar that what he feels he must do is free Armapour from the Caliph. Kumar convinces Malu to help the people of Shayandra by promising to raise an army and march on Armapour, once the curse broken. Kumar's words were, "we will turn the sands of Armapour red with the blood of your enemies." (This is where the title of the book originates.) If you like magic, flying carpets, secret passages, enchanted weapons, love, intrigue, and war; this story is for you.

Book excerpt: This book explores state-of-art techniques based on open-source software and statistical programming and modelling in modern geospatial applications, specifically focusing on recent trends in data mining techniques and robust modelling in Geomorphological, Hydrological, Bio-physical and Social activities. The book is organized into physical, mountainous, coastal, riverine, forest, urban and biological activities, with each chapter providing a review of the current knowledge in the focus area, and evaluating where future efforts should be directed. The text compiles a collection of recent developments and rigorous applications of Geospatial computational intelligence (e.g., artificial neural network, spatial interpolation, physical and environmental modelling and machine learning algorithms etc) in geomorphic processes from a team of expert contributors. The authors address the wide range of challenges and uncertainties in the study of earth system dynamics due to climate change, and complex anthropogenic interferences where spatial modelling may be applied in the risk assessment of vulnerable geomorphological landscapes. The book will act as a guide to find recent advancements in geospatial artificial intelligence techniques and its application to natural and social hazards. This information will be helpful for students, researchers, policy makers, environmentalists, planners involved in natural hazard and disaster management, NGOs, and government organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book in two volumes, and with a foreword by the renowned Professor M.A.J. Williams, draws on evidence from coastal and inland regions, including desert dunes, wind-blown dust, river and lake sediments, glacial moraines, plant and animal fossils, isotope geochemistry, soils and prehistoric archaeology to better understand the genesis and development of dunes systems in selected northern hemisphere sand dunes from Asia, Africa and the Middle East regions. The collection of research papers and case studies that are presented in this book provide the reader with a wealth of information about the distribution and types of sand dunes and an insight into the complexity of sand dune formation, migration and management. Research in many countries across the northern hemisphere shows that dunes, whether coastal or inland, are under pressure around the world. Much of the pressure comes from human activities, and the anthropogenic disturbance, when coupled with global warming and alterations to the amount, frequency and temporal distribution of precipitation could lead to more serious management challenges in the future. There is much that we still need to find out about the origin, genesis and development of sand dunes so that they can be managed better. The difficult and complex questions being repeatedly raised can be answered only by interdisciplinary endeavours. Geomorphologists, geologists, palaeontologists, climatologists, ecologists, and others, can work together on research projects that better define the origin, evolution and development of dunes, both inland and along the coasts. Many chapters in this book attempt to reconstruct past climatic changes in deserts and their margins at a variety of scales in space and time in the expectation that such information might assist in preparing us for future global warming and drying.
