Book excerpt: The Recurrence of the End Times: Voegelin, Hegel, and the Stop-History Movements explores the deep connection between modern political ideologies and the secular eschatological hopes and dreams of a post-Christian society. Focusing primarily upon the thought of 20th century German émigré political scientist Eric Voegelin, the book argues that we cannot understand the globalized world in which we live unless we appreciate the lasting influence of the various "End of History" speculators—specifically, G.W.F Hegel, Alexandre Kojève, and Francis Fukuyama. Through a Voegelinian lens, he dissects the relationship between these three thinkers, also claiming that while Voegelin may have misunderstood Hegel, his critiques of the Hegelian approach to history offer fresh and important perspectives on the contemporary world. This makes a forceful argument that the idea of history as a teleological path, leading toward some goal—whether perfect harmony between nations, a technocratic utopia, a return to some romanticized idyllic “state of nature,” or what Kojève and Fukuyama called the “universal and homogenous State”—has vast, and perverse, implications for the trajectory of American foreign and domestic policy.

Book excerpt: Whether the world ends tomorrow or lasts for centuries, we all exist in a 'climate' of the End of Days. As Thomas Merton wrote, 'We live in an age of two superimposed eschatologies: that of secular anxieties and hopes, and that of revealed fulfillment. Sometimes the first is merely mistaken for the second, sometimes it results from complete denial and despair of the second.' The 'end of time' obviously relates to history, but-just as obviously-it cannot be contained within it. Legends of the End have always been with us; every spiritual tradition that has a story of the beginning of things must also have one of their final end-the end of the earth, of the universe, of time itself. And just as all such myths symbolize invisible realities, so every historical event is precisely an invisible reality made visible and tangible. This book takes a look at eight Legends of the End: Hindu, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hopi, and Lakota. When these stories are placed side-by-side, great differences and startling similarities become apparent-similarities both in broad outlines and in minute details. In light of this traditional lore, the author begins and concludes with a penetrating spiritual meditation on the meaning of the End. Without a grasp of this meaning, to date the End is impossible. With such a grasp, even the most accurate dating is irrelevant, for to know the meaning of the End of Days is already to be beyond it. 'Charles Upton is a serious thinker from whom I have learned much. His writing merits close attention.' - Huston Smith, author of The World's Religions, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a primer, for those who are starting a study of the end times. It will present you with information about some important theological topics from the Bible, which you probably have not heard about previously, or have heard very little about. The topics start with the Rapture of the Church to heaven. This is the resurrection of the dead Christians and the transformation of the living believers. Then the book proceeds to the tribulation, which is a time of intense trouble coming to this earth. There will never be another time on the earth as terrible as this tribulation period ever again. The book continues through to the millennium rule of Christ, and unto the renovation of the old earth. Finally, the reader is introduced to the newly created Heaven and Earth, where no sinners will be allowed. In the New Earth, everyone will live sinless and peaceful lives for all eternity, with God and Christ as king. The chapters proceeds logically, however they can be read in any order, as though they were independent essays. Dr. F. Carl Gilkes was educated and worked as an electronics communications engineer. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from CUNY of New York. After working for approximately fifteen years in the Aircraft Telecommunications and Air Navigation Industry, he changed his focus. He turned his attention to full time studies in Theology. He earned his Doctorate degree, majoring in Theology from MISD of Indiana. Presently he is focusing his attention on evangelism to the non-evangelical, or the traditional religions, such as Anglicans, Roman Catholics, and similar religious groups.

Book excerpt: From the Middle Eastern politics of Donald Trump to the UK's 2016 EU Referendum, large numbers of Christians are making decisions based on the alleged "end-times" aspects of modern politics. Such apocalyptic views often operate beneath "the radar" of much Christian thought and expression. In this book, historian Martyn Whittock argues that while the New Testament does indeed teach the second coming of Christ, complications occur when Christians seek to confidently identify contemporary events as fulfilments of prophecy. Such believers are usually unaware that they stand in a long line of such well-intended but failed predictions. In this book, Whittock explores the history of end-times speculations over two thousand years, revealing how these often reflect the ideologies and outlooks of contemporary society in their application of Scripture. When Christians ignore such past mistakes, they are in danger of repeating them. Jesus, Whittock argues, taught a different way.

The chapters are arranged around the major end-times themes: the rapture, the tribulation, the millennial kingdom, and the eternal state. Each chapter begins with a list of the specific events it covers, making this an extremely user-friendly chronological guide to end-times biblical prophecy. Rhodes allows for various interpretations among Christians. Yet the sequence he describes is faithful to the biblical text, based on a literal approach to prophecy, and held by many Bible scholars. As readers discover that they really can understand Bible prophecy, they will come to love and trust the Scriptures like never before.

Book excerpt: Plunging morality. Massive political and religious corruption. Contempt for Christianity. Media propaganda. Economic uncertainty. Terrorism. Violence. Catastrophic natural disasters. If you desire to gain insight into the rapidly changing world landscape, this is the book for you. It crosses the parameters of "correctness" established by the religious status quo and dares to venture into the reality of Christ's own message on the "time of the end." ...No surmisings ...no private interpretations ...no personal projections, embellishments or denominational biases of any kind. ...Just the raw truth, illuminated by the Holy Spirit, as it leaps from the pages of Scripture, and makes seemingly surreal future events, shrouded in mystery, understandable. Here's a church leader and his wife serving in Jamaica bearing testimony as to how the message affected them: "I've never taught on Revelation because it's always been confusing and there are so many conflicting messages out there. But now I have full confidence in my Biblical stance and the teachings have begun." The book is filled with other testimonies and adorned with the real life accounts of Christian martyrs that gave their lives for Christ amidst perilous times of their own. It also offers a scriptural perspective into the Nazi Holocaust and points to the prophesied recurrence of another holocaust of even greater magnitude that still looms on the horizon. It takes readers back to the beginning, revealing the lavish love and blessings that God intended to eternally bestow upon man before the Fall of Adam; and takes them up to the full restoration of those unspeakable blessings in the latter end. Sandwiched between its pages is a plain and precise sequential panorama of the impending Apocalypse, as well as an overview of God's Divine Plan of Salvation and Redemption from Genesis to Revelation. The Rise of the Antichrist ...The Great Tribulation ...The Mark of the Beast ...The Resurrection of Life ...the Great Wrath of God ...Christ's Triumphal Return to Earth ...the Battle of Armageddon ...the Establishment of the Messiah's Millennial Reign ...the Resurrection of Damnation ...the White Throne Judgment ...and the Lake of Fire and Brimstone are all there in black and white. At its conclusion lies a glimpse into Glory that is so sacred and spectacular, that even the "angels desire to look into" it. Above all else, this book sets before readers the issues of eternity, and for that reason, sounds an urgent call to soul searching. If its impact on others is in any way comparable to its impact on the authors, then a touch from heaven can be expected. It will lift you right out of your own little universe and usher you into the majesty and wonder of God. Travel with us on a Journey of Discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbus is the first blazing star in a constellation of European adventurers whose right to claim and conquer each land mass they encountered was absolutely unquestioned by their countrymen. How a system of religious beliefs made the taking of the New World possible and laudable is the focus of Kadir's timely review of the founding doctrines of empire. The language of prophecy and divine predestination fills the pronouncements of those who ventured across the Atlantic. The effects of such language and their implications for current theoretical debates about colonialism and decolonization are legion. Kadir suggests that in this supposedly postcolonial era, richer nations and the privileged still manipulate the rhetoric of conquest to justify and serve their own worldly ends. For colonized peoples who live today at the "ends of the earth," the age of exploitation may be no different from the age of exploration.
