Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. ON THE OUTPOSTS. Having now prepared the stage, it is time for the prompter to ring up the curtain and call upon it the actors who are to take parts in this first scene of the great drama which is to be enacted in the wilderness. The theatre is only a barn, and the performers are merely a band of strollers, but the spectator will soon see that they are great actors, and the play the first act in a grand drama that may not be played out for centuries--not, at least, until civilization shall have overspread the whole vast continent west of the Alleghanies. By that silent suffrage, according to which every man is speedily elected to his true place in a new community, the young farmer, Robertson, was soon given the leading position in the Watauga settlement. There were older men than he among the settlers, and those better bred and better educated, but it soon came to be understood that he possessed the qualities that peculiarly fitted him for leadership; and so he was tacitly recognized as the head man in the little community, and looked up to and obeyed accordingly. He was at this time not quite thirty years of age. His personal appearance at a later date is described by an aged granddaughter, writing more than a century afterward, as follows: "He was," she writes, "about five feet nine inches in height, heavy' built, but not too fat. His head inclined slightly forward, so that his light-blue eyes were usually shaded by his heavy eyebrows. His hair was very dark--like a mole in color--and his complexion, though naturally very fair, was darkened and reddened by exposure. I remember him as being uncommonly quiet and thoughtful, and full of the cares of business. We all loved and venerated him." * From other sources I gather...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Sevier as a Commonwealth-Builder: A Sequel to the Rearguard of the Revolution The materials from which this volume has been constructed have been, in part, the same as those I employed in writing a preceding book upon the same subject, under the title of "The Rear-Guard of the Revolution." But this work goes over later and more thoroughly tilled ground than that, and hence I have had for it a wider range of authorities. Briefly stated, my sources of information have been, first and primarily, lengthy conversations with Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey, of Knoxville, Tennessee, during which his "Annals of Tennessee" was used somewhat in the manner of a text-book - Dr. Ramsey pointing out its inaccuracies, amplifying its narrative with interesting details, and relating to me such additional facts as he had gathered during the nearly thirty years since the writing of his history. He was a man of rare culture and trained intellect, and, by the character of his mind, was peculiarly qualified for historical investigation. When I knew him, he had given fifty years of his life to the study of this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Female Spy, or Treason in the Camp: A Story of the Revolution Next behind the two personages thus de scribed, rode the two aids-de-camp of the General, also finely equipped, and wearing the uniforms assigned to the rank of major; and next behind these officers rode two black females, one of whom carried an infant in her arms while the rear-guard was composed of two black male servants in livery. Having brought the whole party to your notice, reader, it may be as well to say here of whom it was composed. The one first de scribed was major-general Benedict Arnold; the lady by his side was his wife; the aids-de camp were Majors Varick and Franks; the blacks were the household servants of the General, and the infant was his own child by his present wife. Watkins explore this crucial but often overlooked period, finding that the early years of statehood were an era of great optimism and progress. Ramage and Watkins demonstrate that the eyes of the nation often focused on Kentucky, which was perceived as a leader among the states before the Civil War.--From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution York, near where the hospital now stands. With his cane, his wooden leg, and his stout lungs, he created quite a furor among the little folks who were playing in the neighborhood, and many of them followed him to his door. Hurrah continued the old man, the war is over; peace is declared, and the last red-coat is drummed out of the country. I tell you it did my old eyes good to see the Britishers leave the wharf this morning and the lips of the veteran trem bled and the tears coursed down his wrinkled cheeks. I guess Uncle Tim loves to see sogers about as well as we do said a roguish-looking urchin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daring Deeds of the Old Heroes of the Revolution IN explanation of the plan of this work, it may be stated that such an occasion 'as that upon which the veterans met was especially adapted to awaken recol lections of the struggle for Independence. A Fourth dof-july festival in the old rendezvous of the Boston tea-party-is surely well'calculated to excite patriotic feeling; and when to those who participated in the festival are added a number of the veterans of the War of Independence, filled with glorious recollections, the effect is to turn the mind to the admiration and venera tion of 'the men and deeds of the trying time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mud and Guts: A Look at the Common Soldier of the American Revolution The average American in those days was about what he is today: a small property owner who admired independence and occasion ally was even known to practice it. Then, as today, he resented being governed and taxed by a bunch of remote and powerful bureaucrats. He grumbled a lot over little tyrannies such as stamp acts and tea taxes - but a revolution? The very word causes a shud der to run up the bourgeois spine, and if there ever were, and are, two bourgeois societies, they're England and America. Most people would rather be moderately comfortable and safe than stand up and fight for an illusive term like independence. It has been said that if there had been a back door in the Alamo there would be no Texas. Likewise, if the royal administrators who ran the colonies had had an ounce of sense and perception, our hard-nosed radicals, such as Tom Paine, would never have pre vailed and there would have been no revolution, or rebellion, or whatever it was. The British were really nuts to have let all this happen. But that's the way things go when bureaucrats feel safe. They become blind and arrogant. Those were confusing times, however. It's easy today to say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington and His Generals: Or Legends of the Revolution Allow me, sir, to inscribe with your name, this book of Washington and his Generals, as illustrated in the Legends of the Revolution. To you, as Editor and Proprietor of the first literary journal in the country - a journal which numbering its readers by hundreds of thousands, has hitherto stood alone in its proud devotion to the American Past - do I with sincere feelings of respect for your heart and intellect, dedicate these Legends of the camp, the council, and the field. I am induced to make this Dedication, by a feeling of simple justice to myself and you. Your paper has always been, not only the family paper of the Union, but the Journal of Revolutionary Romance and History. As the Editor, you have ever been untiring in your efforts, to preserve in its columns, the legends of our battle fields, the chronicles of our early struggles for freedom, the memories of our illus trions dead. Your name therefore, by a Sincere impulse of justice, I inscribe at the head of these traditions, trusting that you will excuse the liberty I have taken, on account of the feeling by which it is dictated. There are other reasons which enter into the Spirit of this Dedication. Last summer, when my good name as a citizen, my honor as an author, was attacked in the most licentious manner, by a band of obscene libellers - some of whom have since made their humble and fawning apologies to me - you did not count the cost, nor falter for a moment, but came out for me like a Man, and in the columns of your paper, whipped the whole pack into their native obscurity. This is strong language. The occasion demands it. The men who have made me the object of their slander, ever since I published a line, are no less merciless in their dealings with the unfortunate, than they are servile and truckling to the rich and powerful. They would stab you in the back to-day, and lick the dust from your shoes to-morrow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Guard: A Chronicle of the War "That the honorable enterprises, noble adventures, and deeds of arms, performed in the wars between England and France may be properly related, and held in perpetual remembrance - to the end that brave men taking example from them may be encouraged in their well-doing, I sit down to record a history deserving great praise; but, before I begin, I request of the Saviour of the world, who from nothing created all things, that He will have the goodness to inspire me with sense and sound understanding, to persevere in such manner, that all those who shall read may derive pleasure and instruction from my work, and that I may fall into their good graces. "It is said, and with truth, that all towns are built with many different stones, and that all large rivers are formed from many springs; so are sciences compiled by many learned persons, and what one is ignorant of is known to another; not but that everything is known sooner or later." ... - Sir John Froissart's Preface to his Chronicles of England, France, &c.
