This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors to this book present a comprehensive view of the current status, prospects, and problems of computer networking in higher education, examining networking from the perspectives of both computer users and network suppliers. In the opening chapter, William F. Miller discusses the role that computer networking is likely to play in higher education. He notes that a national network often can provide specialized services more cost-effectively than can individual institutions and is able to offer a wider variety of services than is available at any single computer center. In succeeding chapters, Ronald Segal reports the results of an extensive research project on networking that included the simulation of a national network serying higher education and research; Paul Heller describes the early experiences of the EDUNET network; and Robert Scott discusses important facets of the EDUNET Business Plan. In the concluding chapters, William Massy, Tad Pinkerton, and Barry Berman review conference workshops in three broad areas: policy issues in networking, facilitating services for networking, and network resources.

Book excerpt: When the American Bar Association recreated the trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg on the fortieth anniversary of their execution, the jury acquitted the "mock Rosenbergs," finding that in today's courts they would not have been convicted of espionage. The 1950s trial of the Rosenbergs on charges of "Atomic Spying" and "stealing the secrets of the Atomic bomb" was a major event of Cold War America, galvanizing public opinion on all sides of the question. Secret Agents presents essays by lawyers, cultural critics, social historians and historians of science, as well as a reconsideration of the Rosenbergs by their younger son, Robert Meeropol. Secret Agents gives new resonance to a history we have for too long been willing to forget.

Download or read book Review of Network Management Problems and Issues written by Albrecht J. Neumann and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer networking is broadly considered to include hardware, software, procedures, and people. Networking encompasses many activities: creation of network products, distribution processes, user activities, and supporting services like marketing, documentation, information services, and maintenance. Network management covers both the establishment of networking operations and actual operation of the network facilities. It includes all management functions performed at such network nodes as computing centers, documentation facilities, and service distribution centers. In order to survey the problems facing development of network management, user requirements and system requirements are outlined in a qualitative manner. Examples of political, economic, and legal constraints are summarized, such as the economic impact of extended networks on regional and local computing activities. Critical issues for networking management, and other areas of significant management concern are outlined. Organizational alternatives a reconceived in terms of a four layer organization model . Conclusions deal with continuing problem areas, the need for a structural model for network management, critical experiments and tasks to be undertaken to further networking capabilities, and a suggestion to establish planning teams to initiate some of the steps required for further networking development.

Book Synopsis Improving Decision Making by : Mantha Mehallis
Download or read book Improving Decision Making written by Mantha Mehallis and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on the importance of accurate and timely information for effective decision making. First, Ivan Lach considers the proliferation of statewide planning and policy formation and discusses problems with and ways to improve statewide research. Next, Cheryl Opacinch focuses on decision making for federal postsecondary policy, discussing strategies for influencing the policy-making process by improving the use of community college research. After tracing trends in two-year college research, William Ramsey presents plans for action to involve research as a tool in the development of a master plan. Joseph Rossmeier places his discussion of information resource management in the context of the growing importance of computers, the role of information as a primary institutional asset, and a hierarchy of information needs. M. Kathryne Baratta examines the use of student data in planning and for better management. The utilization of student information systems is further discussed by Toni Hall and Jim Reed, who recommend a planned approach to student follow-up, strategies for organizing research and promoting data utilization, and ways that decision makers should use student information. Mike Stevenson and Dan Walleri present nine guidelines for financial decision making in a period of retrenchment. Mantha Mehallis deals with the improvement of decision making through institutional research. Finally, Donna Dzierlenga cites relevant ERIC documents. (AYC)
