Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real South America As I am under an obligation to so many people for kind assistance, hospitality and advice, always readily given, both at home and in South and Central America, it seems a little unappreciative and, perhaps, ungenerous, to name here only a few of these and leave the many unmentioned yet, that is all that is possible in the preface of any book of travel; which fact is my excuse if I offend by omission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South America The history of a continent such as South America, con fined to the limits of a single volume of moderate size, must of necessity contain some elements of mere survey. Nevertheless, since in no other but a condensed form could the respective strides achieved by the various nations of this continent be satisfactorily judged and compared, the author is encouraged to hope that this small work may fill in one of the most obvious of the many gaps in the English versions of South American history. He has endeavoured to lay stress on the trend of the authorities and peoples in question rather than to emphasize the rigid succession of Governors and Presi dents. In the same way, since space has had to be con sidered, it was thought desirable to introduce at any length only those personalities notable for their actions and intrinsic influence, leaving in the background those others whose only claim to the interest of posterity lies in the weight of the Office they held. Book excerpt: Understanding South America is a book written by author and world traveller Clayton Sedgwick Cooper. This title is intended to be an introduction for American audiences to the continent and people of South America. Understanding South America assumes a broad approach to examining South America. The author travelled the country interacting with the locals in many different countries and communities, and has constructed this book around tales of these travels. The ultimate purpose of the book is to reveal the tendencies and conditions of the lives of South American people. The book examines many different peoples, including chapters on Germans in South America, Peruvians, Cuzco and the modern aboriginal, Argentines, the men of Brazil, and many more topics. Some countries are explored in great depth, such as Brazil, while others receive only cursory mention. Illustrations are also included, which assist the author in contextualizing some of his writings. Understanding South America is a noble early attempt at profiling the continent of South America and the varied peoples that make up its population. While the author is not immune to the colonial attitudes that are so pervasive in works of this nature written in the early twentieth century, Cooper does his best to provide an honest evaluation of his experiences. The strength of the title is the author's handling of various cultures as their own distinct groups, and not painting the entire continent with a single brush. Readers interested in learning about the attitudes of Americans towards South America in the early twentieth century will surely find Understanding South America to be a fascinating read. The book is rich in historical context, and the narrative penned by Cooper is entertaining. This title is a worthwhile addition to the library of anybody interested in South American studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future of South America Owing to the many exceedingly useful books on Latin America already published, I hesitate somewhat in preparing another. Most if not all of the books now issued, however, are written either for the traveler or the historian, without special appeal to commercial and industrial interests. In view of this I have, during the past few years, been systematically collecting information regarding Latin America which should be of service to those looking at this continent from a moneymaking, rather than from an historical, point of view. Although I have personally visited most of the countries of South America, I do not pose as a traveler. My visits have been short, on strictly business missions, and some of the cities about which I have written pages I have been in but a short time. Therefore I do not attempt to compete with the seasoned traveler nor the man who has spent many years in these southern republics. On the other hand, experience with statistics has taught me that often the man who sees countries at a distance, one in comparison with another, gets a truer perspective than one who has spent his life in a given spot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of South America, 1854-1904 A residence of fourteen years in South America, in con nection with journalistic work throughout that continent, brought home to me the need of a concise history of the various South American States since they attained independence from Spanish control. True, such infor mation can be obtained from Spanish and Portuguese chroniclers and authors of other nationalities. But to seek for descriptions Of many different events and periods in diverse directions and varied tongues is always weari some and Often impossible unless a well-stocked library be near at hand for reference. To meet this want has been the purpose and aim of the present work, which although dealing more particularly with the past fifty years, is intended also for purposes of general reference by students of latin-american history and civilisation from the date of the emancipation of the Spanish colonies to the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aborigines of South America The lamented author of this work is well known to geographers as an eminent authority on South America, the author of an interesting paper on the inland seas of that continent in geological times, and of a very important one on its physical geography. He had since applied his great knowledge and powers of deduction and classification to the preparation of a work on the aborigines of South America. It remained incomplete at his death, but the finished part included all the Amazonian races and tribes south of the great river, those of the Gran Chacu, as well as the Araucanian, Pampas, and Patagonian Indians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Hell and Back: My Trip to South America Ell has been glowingly described as a popular and populous place and since I had so Often been told to go there I bought a ticket for South America. Chicago was our first stop. The city divides honor With bean-eating Boston as a windy burg, puffing itself up with pride over What it should be most ashamed. The herd Of humanity rushes here like cattle to Armour's slaughter house, to become food for jails, hospitals, poorhouses, asylums and cemeteries. Shelley - said Hell was a city very much like London, but then he never saw Chicago. From what I saw and heard, If Christ came to Chicago he must have left on the next train. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South Americans The turn of the mountains to be dealt with in something approaching a comprehensive fashion is now at hand, and in the Opinion Of various experts the. Wealth that has already been extracted from the soil of the Continent represents but an insignificant proportion of that which lies undiscovered within its remoter fastnesses. The romance of industry has probably nothing to Show comparable with that worked out in the Americas. SO far as the original enterprise on the part of white men was concerned, the field was virgin, and the aboriginals as new, and almost as strange, as beings from another planet. But for the efforts of the Incas and the Aztecs, all that has been produced in both the Americas has been the work of the races Of Europe and Of their progeny, the present-day Americans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of South America I have divided my subject into two parts the first contains an alphabetically arranged list of authors with only such works as they have written on South America included beneath their names; the second and more im portant part contains a list of all these works re-arranged and classified under their various subject headings so far as my information on their contents is correct. They are also' classified according to their dates of publication so that the order in which books have followed one another in their various sections may be easily noted. This second part includes every book or magazine article in English upon any subject dealing with South America which has come within my view, and includes many items which for want of further information cannot appear in the first part. This work is the result of many searchings into all sorts of odd places and much labour in arranging and re-arranging the titles under their most suitable subject headings, it was first compiled for the purpose of, gaining some idea of the written available knowledge dealing with Argentina but the necessity for taking a broader view of my subject was soon discovered and I had to extend the originally intended Bibliography of Argentina to the more comprehensive title of South America, justifying the change by including an additional collection of titles of works on the other Republics of this Continent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Southern Cross in South America Until comparatively recent times - only a few years back - South America was regarded by the great majority outside its confines as the least known and, therefore, least understood part of the world; and North Americans looked upon it as the part from which least might be expected as far as their own interests were concerned. Journalists and newspaper men were accustomed to picture it as a mysterious land whose chief productions were deadly fevers and frequent insurrections. Indeed, in most cases, when the press mentioned it the purpose was only to chronicle some sanguinary revolution or outburst of border warfare. Several reasons contributed to keep South America in the background and leave it an unappreciated and neglected continent. In the first place its situation was against its becoming more familiar to northern lands. It stretches to the Far South, entirely away from the usual lines of travel and the beaten paths of the ordinary tourist. Few Americans have inclination or time to make personal acquaintance with the peoples and countries below the northern rim of the earth, where the Southern Cross shimmers overhead and where Christmas comes in the heat of summer and July the Fourth occurs in the middle of winter. In the next place our Monroe Doctrine kept foreign hands off this section of the Western Hemisphere; it prevented the European Powers from making it a battle-ground for the acquisition of new territory; hence, no diplomatic problems presented themselves for solution to bring the country to public attention, - it was kept isolated, as it were, from foreign entanglements, a good thing in one way, but harmful in another, as relegating it to its own obscurity. In the third place the ephemeral revolutions did not jeopardize in general the lives or property of foreigners, and consequently, our State Department was not called upon to interfere in the settlement of domestic or foreign claims; it is only very lately that its aid has been invoked in this respect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Races of North and South America In describing the adventures and proceedings of the pioneers in the settlement and civilization of the Western Continent, the interesting nature of the narrative may have led the author, in some from the immediate obj ect of his attention, viz.: the manners, peculiari ties, and history of the aboriginal inhabitants. He trusts, however, that where this may appear to be the case, it will generally be found to have resulted from the inseparable manner in which the history of the natives and those who have supplanted them is interwoven.
