This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "English is so illogical!" It is generally believed that English is a language of exceptions. For many, learning to spell and read is frustrating. For some, it is impossible... especially for the 29% of Americans who are functionally illiterate. But what if the problem is not the language itself, but the rules we were taught? What if we could see the complexity of English as a powerful tool rather than a hindrance? --Denise Eide Uncovering the Logic of English challenges the notion that English is illogical by systematically explaining English spelling and answering questions like "Why is there a silent final E in have, large, and house?" and "Why is discussion spelled with -sion rather than -tion?" With easy-to-read examples and anecdotes, this book describes: - the phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words - how English words are formed and how this knowledge can revolutionize vocabulary development - how understanding the reasons behind English spelling prevents students from needing to guess The author's inspiring commentary makes a compelling case that understanding the logic of English could transform literacy education and help solve America's literacy crisis. Thorough and filled with the latest linguistic and reading research, Uncovering the Logic of English demonstrates why this systematic approach should be as foundational to our education as 1+1=2.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992. This book brings together the work of a number of distinguished international researchers engaged in basic research on beginning reading. Individual chapters address various processes and problems in learning to read - including how acquisition gets underway, the contribution of story listening experiences, what is involved in learning to read words, and how readers represent information about written words in memory. In addition, the chapter contributors consider how phonological, onset-rime, and syntactic awareness contribute to reading acquisition, how learning to spell is involved, how reading ability can be explained as a combination of decoding skill plus listening comprehension skill, and what causes reading difficulties and how to study these causes.

Book excerpt: Alpha-Phonics: IT IS THE PERFECT READING INSTRUCTION PROGRAM TO USE DURING THE VIRUS CRISIS. IT WORKS FAST, IS VERY SIMPLE. SURE RESULTS! THIS ONE BOOK IS COMPLETE. NOTHING ELSE NEEDED. HE/SHE CAN BE READING SIMPLE SENTENCES EVEN ON DAY ONE!! Used by tens of thousands for 37 years. Alpha-Phonics is probably the simplest, most effective, REASONABLY priced phonics instruction programs available. HERE IS WHY IT WORKS SO WELL: IT IS SIMPLE!! (Please also scroll down to see the VIDEO near the bottom left of this page) HERE IS WHY: There are only 44 phonograms (Sounds) the child needs to learn in order to read. Reading, contrary to what you have been told, is easy to teach because all you need to do is teach the student to SOUND OUT the words they want to read. At first, they sound the words out aloud, later they do it in their head silently. That is ALL there is to teaching reading. MOM get this: All 128 Lessons in Alpha-Phonics are covered in ONLY 14 pages of instructions for you. Students begin with short vowels putting together simple words (Like a with m = am or a with s = as) and progress to the more advanced words. With Alpha-Phonics the beginner can be reading simple sentences by lesson three, and that can even be on the first day! Other reading instruction programs try to do too much. They inject grammar, pictures and other material, needlessly complicating the task. Alpha-Phonics just teaches reading only. Alpha-Phonics has as a BONUS: you teach SPELLING easily as you go (through simple dictation). Alpha-Phonics easily introduces over 3,500 words in its simple 128 lessons. Some students can learn to read in only months or less. Alpha-Phonics also works very well for older students, even grown adults who need remediation. Is there a negative about Alpha-Phonics? Yes. In the past 37 years we have heard only one criticism (Only a few times). It is: Some Moms say they think their child can become bored when taught by Alpha-Phonics. Why? Parents have been convinced that learning has to be fun time. They have been led to believe games, card decks, cartoons/pictures, spin the needle tricks, etc., make it fun. They feel they have to entertain their kids while teaching. But this unnecessarily slows down the process. With Alpha-Phonics the student can actually be READING simple sentences even day ONE! Students do see lists of words in Alpha-Phonics lessons, but they QUICKLY are actually READING those words; they are accomplishing, instead of being entertained. The Bells and Whistles in other programs slow the process and cost time and money $$. The huge sense of success in actually reading quickly overcomes any other consideration. We almost forgot the SUPER BONUS: Many ADULTS become BETTER readers while teaching their child! The lessons for the Student are in LARGE TYPE on 8 1/2 X11 pages meaning you can instruct him/her DIRECTLY from the book. Nothing need be copied on separate paper. Makes everything much easier than if it were on 5 X 8 pages. Alpha-Phonics is highly recommended by leading Homeschooling curriculum reviewers such as Mary Pride, Cathy Duffy, Karen Andreola. Amazon also has a set of practice Readers and a practice Phonics Workbook to accompany Alpha-Phonics. (But they are NOT required, but Moms find them helpful) The Alpha-Phonics and How To Tutor Little Companion READERS (10 books combined into one handy book): $ 19.95 (ISBN 9780941995344). They are specifically designed to follow along with the Alpha-Phonics book as you teach from it. The other resource is The Alpha-Phonics and How To Tutor Phonics Companion PRACTICE WORKBOOK: $ 19.95 (ISBN: 9780941995337). Designed to accompany the Alpha-Phonics book as you go through the lessons. ALPHA-PHONICS REALLY DOES WORK.......IT HAS FOR OVER 37 YEARS!!

This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a little known fact that reading was taught by means of spelling for over 200 years. Today the impact of spelling on reading achievement is not as well appreciated as it once was. The late Dr. Ronald P. Carver did extensive research into the causal relationships between spelling instruction and reading ability. Carver concluded, "One very important way to learn how to pronounce more words accurately is sometimes overlooked, that is, learning to spell more words accurately." (Causes of High and Low Reading Achievement, p. 178). He also notes that "spelling was used to teach reading for almost 200 years, but by the beginning of the 20th century, the tide had so turned that learning to spell was largely seen as incidental to learning to read." Quoting C. A. Perfetti, Carver observed, "practice at spelling should help reading more than practice of reading helps spelling." (p. 179. In June of 2004 Miss Geraldine Rodgers sent me her essay, "Why Noah Webster's Way Was the Right Way." She argued from the history of reading and the psychology of reading that Webster's spelling book method of teaching reading and spelling was superior to all other methods. I was surprised to learn that that Webster, in his 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, defined a Spelling Book as, " A book for teaching children to spell and read." He also wrote under the entry, Spelling, "To tell the name of letters of a word, with a proper division of syllables, for the purpose of learning the pronunciation. In this manner children learn to read by first spelling the words." You can see that Webster was quite clear about the dual purpose of the spelling books in his day. You can imagine my surprise at the improvement I began to get with my tutoring students when they started working through Webster's Spelling Book. I decided to type up my own edition to use in my private tutoring and my tutoring work at the Odessa Christian School in Odessa, TX, where I teach remedial reading and Spanish. In this edition, I have retained everything in the original 1908 (descendant from the 1829 edition). The only differences relate to formatting. I chose to list the words in rows instead of columns. I also allow the words to divide at the ends of lines. I have found that this works fine for all students. We are teaching students to read and spell by syllables and not by word shapes or context. When reading and spelling are taught by the Spelling Book Method, all guessing at words from shape or context is completely eliminated. The student's total focus is on pronouncing the words correctly, high levels of comprehension are a natural result.
