Book Synopsis Saints, Cure-seekers and Miraculous Healing in Twelfth-century England by : Ruth J. Salter
Download or read book Saints, Cure-seekers and Miraculous Healing in Twelfth-century England written by Ruth J. Salter and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cults of the saints were central to the medieval Church. These holy men and women acted as patrons and protectors to the religious communities who housed their relics and to the devotees who requested their assistance in petitioning God for a miracle. Among the collections of posthumous miracle stories, miracula, accounts of holy healing feature prominently and depict cure-seekers successfully securing their desired remedy for a range of ailments and afflictions. What can these miracle accounts tell us of the cure-seekers' experiences of their journey from ill health to recovery, and how was healthcare presented in these sources? This book undertakes an in-depth study of the miraculous cure-seeking process through the lens of Latin miracle accounts produced in twelfth-century England, a time both when saints' cults particularly flourished and there was an increasing transmission and dissemination of classical and Arabic medical works. Focused on shorter miracula with a predominantly localised focus, and thus on a select group of cure-seekers, it brings together studies of healthcare and pilgrimage to look at an alternative to medical intervention and the practicalities and processes of securing saintly assistance.

Book Synopsis The Complete Handbook of Children's Reading Disorders by : Hilde L. Mosse
Download or read book The Complete Handbook of Children's Reading Disorders written by Hilde L. Mosse and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M.D. Hilde L. Mosse, head psychiatrist for the N.Y. City Board of Education, writes from her own highly successful experience in teaching 1000 psychologically disturbed & disabled children to read, write & spell English. Her clinical evaluation procedures detail precisely how children should be examined for cognitive subskills. The renowned Dr. William Cruickshank renamed the book for the present publisher to: YOU CAN PREVENT OR CORRECT LEARNING DISORDERS. His endorsement reads, "It is unusual that a doctor of medicine has become an authority on the theoretical & clinical aspects of reading. Dr. Mosse illustrates that authority extensively & intensively. Her original two volumes (now together in paperback) is a compendium of significant information. It indeed could & should serve as a text for educational courses for learning disability teachers as well as provide valuable insights for classroom teachers, parents, aides & others concerned with learning disorders. Here is a book by an author who knows her subject matter, who obviously knows disabled children & who understands appropriate intervention & prevention procedures. This book should be in every university, every library & in the office of every professor of education, every superintendent, principal & disability specialist." Book Synopsis The Healing Tradition of the New Testament by : Douglas Ellory Pett
Download or read book The Healing Tradition of the New Testament written by Douglas Ellory Pett and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years there has been a great surge of interest in the healing ministry, yet this ferment of activity seems not to have been matched by an equally fresh or energetic study of healing in the New Testament, which ostensibly forms the basis, and is still claimed as supplying the inspiration for the 'revival' of this ministry. This work is the first, serious, critical study of healing in the New Testament as a discrete subject. Its purpose is to arrive at a clearer understanding of what Scripture actually tells us about healing; not what we imagine it says or hope that it might say, not what we may have been led to believe it says, nor indeed what we have sometimes been taught that it says, but what the sacred authors actually wrote, and more to the point, what they meant by what they wrote.
Book Synopsis Participatory reading in late-medieval England by : Heather Blatt
Download or read book Participatory reading in late-medieval England written by Heather Blatt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book traces affinities between digital and medieval media, exploring how reading functioned as a nexus for concerns about increasing literacy, audiences’ agency, literary culture and media formats from the late fourteenth to the early sixteenth centuries. Drawing on a wide range of texts, from well-known poems of Chaucer and Lydgate to wall texts, banqueting poems and devotional works written by and for women, Participatory reading argues that making readers work offered writers ways to shape their reputations and the futures of their productions. At the same time, the interactive reading practices they promoted enabled audiences to contribute to – and contest – writers’ burgeoning authority, making books and reading work for everyone.
