Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Raw Materials for the Enamel Industry and Their Chemical Technology This volume appears at a psychological moment in the history of nations, when dependence upon our own resources has never been so emphasized, and deals with an industry which has developed entirely within the last twenty years, and is now of profound economic significance. When one considers that some thing approaching persons find their livelihood as enamellers in German speaking countries, and that a large part of their output finds a market in England, it will be realised that the cutting off of supplies will cause a gap in kitchen economics not easy to fill. Consequently, a very lucrative industry waits the enterprise of English manufacturers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Enamelling on Iron and Steel: With Historical Notes on the Use of Enamel The manufacture of enamelled ware is carried on to greater extent in Germany and France than else where. This treatise is from the pen of a German technologist of iwide experience in enamel works, and who is now the chief Chemist and director of large works in the French centre of the industry. The book deals more especially with the process of enamelling hollow - ware. It gives a description of the raw material, used in enamelling; it explains the action and the cfiect of each substance, and states the chemical combinations which take place. A number Of mixtures are given for Obtaining given eeects or colourings. The process of enamelling is followed up in detail from the mixing, melting, and grinding of the enamel components; the annealing and pickling of the sheets and castings; the appli cation Oi the enamel; the burning, decorating, etc. It also compares utensils made of enamelled ware with similar ones made Of nickel and aluminium. The book abounds in instructive matter which throws much light on the intricacies Of a branch of industry in which very few people are posted, and it is hoped that this English edition will be found. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials and Methods Used in the Manufacture of Enameled Cast-Iron Wares It is the purpose of this paper to deal with the materials and methods employed in the manufacture of enameled cast-iron ware. In order that more general information may be available regarding the raw materials used in the compounding of enamels, considerable attention is given to the sources and methods of preparation of these materials, as well as to their properties and effects when introduced into the enamel composition. Methods of calculating enamel formulas and examples of the compositions of enamels of various types are given. The defects in enamels, their causes, and the remedies to be employed in overcoming them are discussed from both the theoretical and practical standpoints. Manufacturing methods and equipment used in compounding the enamels, making and preparing the castings, and applying the enamels are also discussed. This treatise deals with the enameling of cast iron by the dry, or American, process. In this method of manufacture, the thor oughly cleaned casting is painted with a suspension in water of powdered glass, clay, and other materials. This suspension is known as the ground coat. The casting is then heated until the ground coat is thoroughly fused, forming an extremely thin layer of transparent glass on the casting. The piece of ware is with drawn from the furnace and immediately coated, by means of long-handled sieves, with a layer of opaque, white, powdered glass, known as the cover-coat enamel. Next, the casting is returned to the furnace for a couple of minutes during which the cover-coat enamel fuses to a smooth layer. Two such layers of cover coat are usually applied, giving a total thickness of from 31; to 337 of an inch. The treatise does not deal with the methods of enameling cast iron by the wet process, in which a relatively thin cover coat is applied to a thick and only partially fused opaque ground coat. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
