Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Beginning in November, 1966, studies on rattlesnakes (genera Crotalus and Sistrurus) and other pit Vipers were initiated at the Dallas Zoo which included techniques for maintenance and disease treatments, in conjunction with Observations on captive and wild populations. Maintenance techniques and disease treatments have been published in an earlier contribution. The results of our studies on the ecology and natural history of Mexican rattlesnakes are contained in the present account. Since numerous behavioral sequences were difficult to record in the field, many rattlesnakes were maintained in the laboratory. Over one hundred and twenty-five captive individuals, comprising over 50 taxa (including forms indigenous to the United States) were avail able for study. We have attempted to Show the value of a multifaceted ap proach to the study of a body of organisms by beginning with field Observations as a basis for understanding, followed by maintenance in the captive state whereupon specimens can be placed upon death in a systematic museum collection. This arrangement allows an investigator to examine various aspects of an animal's being by recording data which would be virtually impossible to record in the field. Further, this combined approach maximized our abili ties as one Of us is somewhat incompetent in the field and the other is an erratic animal keeper. The republication of the Second Edition, with a new foreword by Harry W. Greene, will give amateur and professional herpetologists alike reason to rejoice. Volume 1 covers taxonomy, physiology, and behavior; Volume 2 concentrates on the rattlesnake's interactions with other organisms, including humans. Klauber's detailed and thorough study is still one of the most complete rattlesnake references ever published.Greene's Foreword discusses the initial impact and continuing value of Klauber's work and recounts some of the advances in knowledge of rattlesnake biology during the past 25 years. Also included is an update of rattlesnake taxonomy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maintenance of Rattlesnakes in Captivity Beginning in November 1966, a multifaceted approach for the investigation of rattlesnakes (genera Crotalus and Sistrurus) and other pit vipers was initiated at the Dallas Zoo by using a combina tion of field and captive observations. Our observations concerning the ecology and natural history of wild rattlesnakes were utilized as a basis in order to successfully maintain captive Specimens. Further, many of the behavioral components found in rattlesnakes were not readily observable in the field but could be seen in captiv ity. As our studies continued, it became apparent that the continua tion of a captive colony of rattlesnakes, roughly numbering 50 taxa and 125 individuals, required Specialized techniques. To that end, we searched the literature dealing with reptilian husbandry, espe cially concerning rattlesnakes. In addition, we consulted with col leagues who had successfully maintained these Ophidians. Since reproductive and captive propagation was a consideration, we tried to develop a format with that objective in mind. The results of our studies are contained in this account and a companion volume which deals with the ecology and natural history of 45 taxa of Mexican rattlesnakes. This present account is divided into two parts; the first covers successful husbandry techniques, and the second surveys organisms causing pathogenicity, recommenda tions for treatment and appropriate medical procedures. It is obvious that many of these techniques can be applied on a larger scale to the captive maintenance of a considerable number of reptile species besides rattlesnakes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Deserts represents a milestone: it is the first comprehensive reference to the first comprehensive reference to deserts and semideserts of the world. Approximately seven hundred entries treat subjects ranging from desert survival to the way deserts are formed. Topics include biology (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, plants, bacteria, physiology, evolution), geography, climatology, geology, hydrology, anthropology, and history. The thirty-seven contributors, including volume editor Michael A. Mares, have had extensive careers in deserts research, encompassing all of the world’s arid and semiarid regions. The Encyclopedia opens with a subject list by topic, an organizational guide that helps the reader grasp interrelationships and complexities in desert systems. Each entry concludes with cross-references to other entries in the volume, inviting the reader to embark on a personal expedition into fascinating, previously unknown terrain. In addition a list of important readings facilitates in-depth study of each topic. An exhaustive index permits quick access to places, topics, and taxonomic listings of all plants and animals discussed. More than one hundred photographs, drawings, and maps enhance our appreciation of the remarkable life, landforms, history, and challenges of the world’s arid land.
