Book Synopsis Urban Transport XIV by : C. A. Brebbia
Download or read book Urban Transport XIV written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation in cities, with its related environmental and social concerns continues to be a topic of the utmost priority for urban authorities and central governments around the world. Frequently, the concern is not orderly but driven by the safety crises, which take place regularly, and even the best-planned urban transport systems require considerable studies to safeguard their safety, maintenance and operational use. On a broader front, the continuing need for better urban transport systems in general and the need for a healthier environment has led to an increased level of research around the world. This is reflected in the proceedings of the Thirteenth International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment in the 21st Century, which stresses the continuous steady growth and research into the urban transport systems control aspects, information and imulation systems. All these topics continue to be of importance for analyzing the complex inter-relation of the urban transport environment and for establishing action strategies for transport and traffic problems. Of interest to engineers, scientists and managers working in industry, universities, research organizations and government involved in the planning and management of urban transportation systems and transport policy, this book contains papers within the following subject areas: Environmental and ecological considerations; Information systems and GPS applications; Intelligent transport systems; Intermodel passenger transport systems; Land use and transport integration; Modality in freight; Public transport systems; Road pricing; Traffic management; Transport automation; Transport logistics and operations research; Transport modelling and simulation; Transport security and safety; Transport sustainability; Transport technology; Urban transport planning.
Book Synopsis Architecture and the Landscape of Modernity in China before 1949 by : Edward Denison
Download or read book Architecture and the Landscape of Modernity in China before 1949 written by Edward Denison and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores China’s encounter with architecture and modernity in the tumultuous epoch before Communism – an encounter that was mediated not by a singular notion of modernism emanating from the west, but that was uniquely multifarious, deriving from a variety of sources both from the west and, importantly, from the east. The heterogeneous origins of modernity in China are what make its experience distinctive and its architectural encounters exceptional. These experiences are investigated through a re-evaluation of established knowledge of the subject within the wider landscape of modern art practices in China. The study draws on original archival and photographic material from different artistic genres and, architecturally, concentrates on China’s engagement with the west through the treaty ports and leased territories, the emergence of architecture as a profession in China, and Japan’s omnipresence, not least in Manchuria, which reached its apogee in the puppet state of Manchukuo. The study’s geographically, temporally, and architecturally inclusive approach framed by the concept of multiple modernities questions the application of conventional theories of modernity or post-colonialism to the Chinese situation. By challenging conventional modernist historiography that has marginalised the experiences of the west’s other for much of the last century, this book proposes different ways of grappling with and comprehending the distinction and complexity of China’s experiences and its encounter with architectural modernity.

Book Synopsis Transport and the industrial city by : Peter Maw
Download or read book Transport and the industrial city written by Peter Maw and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first scholarly study of the contribution of canals to Britain’s industrial revolution. Although the achievements of canal engineers remain central to popular understandings of industrialisation, historians have been surprisingly reticent to analyse the full scope of the connections between canals, transport and the first industrial revolution. Focusing on Manchester, Britain’s major centre of both industrial and transport innovation, it shows that canals were at the heart of the self-styled Cottonopolis. Not only did canals move the key commodities of Manchester’s industrial revolution –coal, corn, and cotton – but canal banks also provided the key sites for the factories that made Manchester the ‘shock city’ of the early Victorian age. This book will become essential reading for historians and students interested in the industrial revolution, transport, and the unique history of Manchester, the world’s first industrial city.
Book Synopsis Engines for empire by : Edward Spiers
Download or read book Engines for empire written by Edward Spiers and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engines for Empire examines the use of the railway by the British army from the 1830s to 1914, a period of domestic political strife and unprecedented imperial expansion. The book uses a wide array of sources and images to demonstrate how the Victorian army embraced this new technology, how it monitored foreign wars, and how it came to use the railway in both support and operational roles. The British army's innovation is also revealed, through its design and use of armoured trains, the restructuring of hospital trains, and in its capacity to build and repair railway track, bridges, and signals under field conditions. This volume provides insights on the role of railways in imperial development, as a focus of social interaction between adversaries, and as a means of projecting imperial power. It will make fascinating reading for students, academics and enthusiasts in military and imperial history, Victorian studies, railway history and colonial warfare.
