Download or read book What Is Islam? written by Shahab Ahmed and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold new conceptualization of Islam that reflects its contradictions and rich diversity What is Islam? How do we grasp a human and historical phenomenon characterized by such variety and contradiction? What is "Islamic" about Islamic philosophy or Islamic art? Should we speak of Islam or of islams? Should we distinguish the Islamic (the religious) from the Islamicate (the cultural)? Or should we abandon "Islamic" altogether as an analytical term? In What Is Islam?, Shahab Ahmed presents a bold new conceptualization of Islam that challenges dominant understandings grounded in the categories of "religion" and "culture" or those that privilege law and scripture. He argues that these modes of thinking obstruct us from understanding Islam, distorting it, diminishing it, and rendering it incoherent. What Is Islam? formulates a new conceptual language for analyzing Islam. It presents a new paradigm of how Muslims have historically understood divine revelation—one that enables us to understand how and why Muslims through history have embraced values such as exploration, ambiguity, aestheticization, polyvalence, and relativism, as well as practices such as figural art, music, and even wine drinking as Islamic. It also puts forward a new understanding of the historical constitution of Islamic law and its relationship to philosophical ethics and political theory. A book that is certain to provoke debate and significantly alter our understanding of Islam, What Is Islam? reveals how Muslims have historically conceived of and lived with Islam as norms and truths that are at once contradictory yet coherent.

Book Synopsis Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an by : Denise Spellberg
Download or read book Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an written by Denise Spellberg and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and illuminating book, Denise A. Spellberg reveals a little-known but crucial dimension of the story of American religious freedom—a drama in which Islam played a surprising role. In 1765, eleven years before composing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson bought a Qur’an. This marked only the beginning of his lifelong interest in Islam, and he would go on to acquire numerous books on Middle Eastern languages, history, and travel, taking extensive notes on Islam as it relates to English common law. Jefferson sought to understand Islam notwithstanding his personal disdain for the faith, a sentiment prevalent among his Protestant contemporaries in England and America. But unlike most of them, by 1776 Jefferson could imagine Muslims as future citizens of his new country. Based on groundbreaking research, Spellberg compellingly recounts how a handful of the Founders, Jefferson foremost among them, drew upon Enlightenment ideas about the toleration of Muslims (then deemed the ultimate outsiders in Western society) to fashion out of what had been a purely speculative debate a practical foundation for governance in America. In this way, Muslims, who were not even known to exist in the colonies, became the imaginary outer limit for an unprecedented, uniquely American religious pluralism that would also encompass the actual despised minorities of Jews and Catholics. The rancorous public dispute concerning the inclusion of Muslims, for which principle Jefferson’s political foes would vilify him to the end of his life, thus became decisive in the Founders’ ultimate judgment not to establish a Protestant nation, as they might well have done. As popular suspicions about Islam persist and the numbers of American Muslim citizenry grow into the millions, Spellberg’s revelatory understanding of this radical notion of the Founders is more urgent than ever. Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an is a timely look at the ideals that existed at our country’s creation, and their fundamental implications for our present and future.

Book Synopsis The Miraculous Language of the Qur'an: Evidence of Divine Origin by : Bassam Saeh
Download or read book The Miraculous Language of the Qur'an: Evidence of Divine Origin written by Bassam Saeh and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study illustrates why the language of the Qur'an is miraculous, unique, and evidence of divine authority. The author compares the language of the Qur'an with the language of pre-Islamic poetry, the Prophet's words (hadith), and the language of the Arabs both past and present, to demonstrate that although the Qur'an was revealed in Arabic it was at the same time an Arabic which was entirely new. Original and early Muslim audiences viewed this as miraculous and responded to the Qur'an's words, sounds, rhythms, etc. in a manner consistent with a deeper appreciation of its beauty and majesty which modern ears, trained by familiarity, and despite being surrounded by all manner of dictionaries and studies, are at a loss to capture. The author attempts to remove this veil and present the Qur'an to readers as if hearing it for the first time, to bring to life some of this wonder. In doing so he guides readers to appreciate the beauty of the Qur'an, to become more immersed in it, and to have a clearer understanding of its structure and flow. Devoting special attention to Surah Al Muddaththir, to underpin his analysis, Saeh thus brings the Revelation to life, to demonstrate that each surah has distinct features and characteristics that make it stand out uniquely within the design and sweep of the whole.

Book Synopsis The Crisis of Islam by : Bernard Lewis
Download or read book The Crisis of Islam written by Bernard Lewis and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his first book since What Went Wrong? Bernard Lewis examines the historical roots of the resentments that dominate the Islamic world today and that are increasingly being expressed in acts of terrorism. He looks at the theological origins of political Islam and takes us through the rise of militant Islam in Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, examining the impact of radical Wahhabi proselytizing, and Saudi oil money, on the rest of the Islamic world. The Crisis of Islam ranges widely through thirteen centuries of history, but in particular it charts the key events of the twentieth century leading up to the violent confrontations of today: the creation of the state of Israel, the Cold War, the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, and the September 11th attacks on the United States. While hostility toward the West has a long and varied history in the lands of Islam, its current concentration on America is new. So too is the cult of the suicide bomber. Brilliantly disentangling the crosscurrents of Middle Eastern history from the rhetoric of its manipulators, Bernard Lewis helps us understand the reasons for the increasingly dogmatic rejection of modernity by many in the Muslim world in favor of a return to a sacred past. Based on his George Polk Award–winning article for The New Yorker, The Crisis of Islam is essential reading for anyone who wants to know what Usama bin Ladin represents and why his murderous message resonates so widely in the Islamic world.

Book Synopsis Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge & Truth by : Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad
Download or read book Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge & Truth written by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad and published by Islam International Publications Ltd. This book was released on 1998-06-30 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any divide between revelation and rationality, religion and logic has to be irrational. If religion and rationality cannot proceed hand in hand, there has to be something deeply wrong with either of the two. Does revelation play any vital role in human affairs? Is not rationality sufficient to guide man in all the problems which confront him? Numerous questions such as these are examined with minute attention. All major issues which intrigue the modern mind are attempted to be incorporated in this fascinatingly comprehensive statute. Whatever the intellectual or educational background of the reader, this book is bound to offer him something of his interest. It examines a very diverse and wide range of subjects including the concept of revelation in different religions, history of philosophy, cosmology, extraterrestrial life, the future of life on earth, natural selection and its role in evolution. It also elaborately discusses the advent of the Messiah, or other universal reformers, awaited by different religions. Likewise, many other topical issues which have been agitating the human mind since time immemorial are also incorporated. The main emphasis is on the ability of the Quran to correctly discuss all important events of the past, present and future from the beginning of the universe to its ultimate end. Aided by strong incontrovertible logic and scientific evidence, the Quran does not shy away from presenting itself to the merciless scrutiny of rationality. It will be hard to find a reader whose queries are not satisfactorily answered. We hope that most readers will testify that this will always stand out as a book among books – perhaps the greatest literary achievement of this century.
Download or read book The Quran Speaks written by Bahis Sedq and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even those who dispute the Quran do not question that it is in its original form. This enables one to travel back in time to take a closer look at the Prophet Muhammad, who is amongst the most towering personalities in history. This book avails that priceless chance to reconstruct his life based on evidence as well preserved as the Quran. It also explores the Quran’s message on issues ranging from justice and women to the treatment of other religions, to see if the disconnect between certain Islamic practices and the modern world is based on misreading of the Quran. Among other topics, the book assesses the claims that the Quran is a scientific miracle, contains no inconsistencies, and is a masterpiece of literature, and also discusses the controversial incident of the “Satanic” verses in light of disclosures in the Quran. The effort is to gain a holistic understanding of possibly the most influential book of all time. The author has chosen to write under a penname, Seeker of the Truth, but remains optimistic of disclosing his identity in the future. He does not doubt that a vast majority of Muslims would allow him to express the views noted in this book, which are founded on the Quran. “Sedq uses many different translations of the Quran to present the material as clearly and sensibly as possible. ... Bottom line: This is an intriguing, engaging look at a religion still misunderstood by many in the West. ... It is bound to provoke heated debate.” –Blueink Review “A searching look at the teachings of the Quran. ... Sedq takes up several common assertions about the Quran and subjects them to a scholarly, thorough, and often refreshingly cant-free contemporary analysis that takes modern social norms and literary scholarship into account. ... Sedq offers an interpretative look at the Quran that curious minds of all faiths will find fascinating.” –Kirkus Reviews What’s the most interesting or important book to come out recently about the Islamic world? “The Quran Speaks by Bahis Sedq: a hugely important book by a scholar of Islam who is, to my mind, the most sophisticated of all the dissidents in the Muslim world. He could be the Muslim Luther, if there were only a way to keep him safe.” –Ayaan Hirsi Ali in The New York Times
Download or read book For the Muslims written by Edwy Plenel and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A piercing denunciation of Islamophobia in France, in the tradition of Emile Zola At the beginning of the twenty-first century, leading intellectuals are claiming “There is a problem with Islam in France,” thus legitimising the discourse of the racist National Front. Such claims have been strengthened by the backlash since the terrorist attacks in Paris in January and November 2015, coming to represent a new ‘common sense’ in the political landscape, and we have seen a similar logic play out in the United States and Europe. Edwy Plenel, former editorial director of Le Monde, essayist and founder of the investigative journalism website Mediapart tackles these claims head-on, taking the side of his compatriots of Muslim origin, culture or belief, against those who make them into scapegoats. He demonstrates how a form of “Republican and secularist fundamentalism” has become a mask to hide a new form of virulent Islamophobia. At stake for Plenel is not just solidarity but fidelity to the memory and heritage of emancipatory struggles and he writes in defence of the Muslims, just as Zola wrote in defence of the Jews and Sartre wrote in defence of the blacks. For if we are to be for the oppressed then we must be for the Muslims.
Book Synopsis The Glorious Quran and Science by : Faisal Ahmad Qureshi
Download or read book The Glorious Quran and Science written by Faisal Ahmad Qureshi and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verses of the Quran are called "Ayats". Quranic "Ayats" are proofs, miracles, and signs of Allah (swt) (The God). In the Quran, not only are the verses Ayats, but Allah says phenomenon in Nature, Earth and the Universe, fundamentally all things in His Creation, are also Ayats. Also, in the Quran, Allah (swt) says to reflect on the Ayats in both the Quranic verses as well as on Creation in order to believe in Him and His Messenger and follow the Divine Laws. The Quran itself has attributes of many things. Some of them are mentioned as "The Book of Enlightenment", "Criterion", "Light", "Reminder", "Admonishment", "Clear Evidence", "Wise", "Invincible", "Word of the Honorable Messenger" (Gabriel (as)), "Guidance", "Book of Revelation", "Recitation". Since in the Quran it refers to natural phenomena in the Heavens and Earth as Ayats as well, and upon reflecting on them, we can see connections and descriptions of scientific facts and theories that exist therein. These in themselves are miraculous given the scientific knowledge known at the time and place of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), The Chosen One, when receiving Revelation. In this book, we can speculate the scientific reality of certain Ayats of the Quran. This includes scientific fields of physics, astrophysics, biology, quantum mechanics, mathematics, and in some cases, string theory. As a Muslim, the Quran is the source of truth for the reality of all things. We will see how certain Ayats match current scientific knowledge, both factual and theoretical, but also in some cases, where there are differences from the theoretical side of science. But in these cases, as we have multiple theories of science, where we hold some to be more possible actualities than others, the Quranic Ayats still adhere to one of them that we consider to be a possibility. Theories are in themselves, speculations. English Translation of Quran done by Talal Itani

Book Synopsis The Qur'anic Worldview by : Abdulhamid A. Abusulayman
Download or read book The Qur'anic Worldview written by Abdulhamid A. Abusulayman and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a carefully reasoned, positive, and largely reflective work. Looking back at the various stages of Islamic historical development, AbuSulayman puts forward a thesis that focuses on the recovery of what is termed the Qur’anic worldview. By this is meant an ethical, monotheistic, and purposeful perspective on the world and those within it. Our faith will only be complete when we have become utterly sincere in our love for God, a love expressed in a pure, passionate love for goodness and truth in this world. It was the strict internalization of this perspective and close adherence to the principles of the Qur’an which AbuSulayman contends, played a key factor in galvanizing the devout and intensely God-conscious followers of fledgling Islam to achieve the successes that they once did, the profound historical and global impact of which is still the subject of much study and admiration today. The rebirth of Islamic identity through this Qur’anic worldview is the key requirement of our times and a prerequisite for any future healthy and viable development of Muslim societies.
