Book excerpt: If only we could hold the actual words of Luke's descriptive narrative or Paul's outpouring of pastoral pain to the church at Corinth. Now we can. A continuing quest to recover the New Testament text allows Christians to open their Bibles with confidence that the words approximate the writers' Greek quill strokes or the English equivalents. Such thought breaths excitement into Philip Comfort's history of the New Testament text and discussion of the credibility (and limitations) of texts and translations. Comfort challenges the view that early copyists were careless and took editorial liberties. He argues that their accuracy and integrity are indisputable. While this task involves comparing manuscripts, technical facts are framed in historical and cultural color. He assures Christians that even uncovering the paper signed by Paul would not change our understanding of what he said. This introduction to the work of textual criticism challenges students to continue the quest for the original text. It is essentially a sequel to 'Early Manuscripts and Modern Translations of the New Testament.'

Book excerpt: New Testament theology raises many questions, not only within its own boundaries, but also in relation to other fields such as history, literary criticism, sociology, psychology, history, politics, philosophy, and religious studies. But, the overarching question concerns the relevance of two thousand year old writings in today's world. How does one establish what is and is not relevant in the New Testament? How does one communicate the ancient ideas, presented in an alien language, alien time, and alien culture to a contemporary audience? This book is intended to serve as a methodological introduction to the field of New Testament theology, aimed at a range of readers-undergraduate and Seminary students, clergy, and laypersons interested in the relevance of scripture. It is a guide which aims to help readers understand how practitioners of New Testament theology have wrestled with the relationship between historical reconstruction of the New Testament, and its interpretation in the modern world.

Book excerpt: 2013 Word Guild Award (Biblical Studies) A recognized expert in New Testament Greek offers a historical understanding of the writing, transmission, and translation of the New Testament and provides cutting-edge insights into how we got the New Testament in its ancient Greek and modern English forms. In part responding to those who question the New Testament's reliability, Stanley Porter rigorously defends the traditional goals of textual criticism: to establish the original text. He reveals fascinating details about the earliest New Testament manuscripts and shows that the textual evidence supports an early date for the New Testament's formation. He also explores the vital role translation plays in biblical understanding and evaluates various translation theories. The book offers a student-level summary of a vast amount of historical and textual information.

This book was released on 2023-10-06 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the traditional definition of the original text of the New Testament (NT) has shifted from seeking one singular text to seeking a number of texts. Instead of one “authorial” text, now it is claimed that it could be one of several different texts based on their locations in the history of transmission: preauthorial, authorial, canonical, and postcanonical. These distinctions were first listed by Eldon Epp in his article “The Multivalence of the Term ‘Original Text’ in New Testament Textual Criticism” as “predecessor,” “autographic,” “canonical,” and “interpretive” text-forms. It is apparent that with such changing definitions of the original text of the NT, text-critics are ambivalent regarding reaching the traditional goal of NT textual criticism. Instead, attention is now given towards hypothesizing regarding the emergence of the variant readings. Furthermore, any attempt towards utilizing text-critical principles to reach the original text is looked upon as being out of date and pointless. All such shifting definitions of the original text and the ensuing claims have far-reaching consequences for biblical faith and praxis. In this work, three different scholars will present their methodologies for retrieving the original text of the NT. No matter how each of the presenters evaluates the text-critical evidence, it is obvious that they all believe in the inerrancy and retrievability of the NT text.

Book excerpt: What are the churchgoers, the Bible college students, and seminary students to do when one Bible scholar says one thing and another Bible scholar says something quite different, or worse still, several Bible scholars are giving you several different opinions on one particular Bible issue? What makes it even more unsettling is when the Christian is not well informed in that area of study, only having basic knowledge. How can the Christian possibly know which of the Bible scholars are correct? Worse still, the Christian is put in the embarrassing position on social media of telling an atheist or Bible critic one of the scholar’s views, and then the atheist or Bible critic responds to the Christian with, ‘no your evidence is outdated, as recent research points to __________,’ and then they offer another answer that put the Bible in a bad light. What is the Christian to do? What will be accomplished here in this publication is we are going to give the reader much evidence when it comes to the documents of the New Testament, how that evidence impacts our Bible translations and an in-depth look at Bible difficulties as well. This can be used to build your faith, to save someone who may have begun to doubt the trustworthiness of the Bible, and many reading responses that can be used on social media and other forms of your ministry. Andrews is an author of more than 140 books, many of which are a defense of God’s Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT was copied and recopied by hand for 1,500 years. Regardless of those scribes who had worked very hard to be faithful in their copying, errors crept into the text. How can we be confident that what we have today is the Word of God? Wilkins and Andrews offer the reader an account of the copying by hand and transmission of the Greek New Testament. They present a comprehensive survey of the manuscript history from the penning of the 27 New Testament books to the current critical texts. What did the ancient books look like and how were documents written? How were the New Testament books published? Who would use secretaries? Why was it so hard to be a secretary in the first century? How was such work done? What do we know about the early Christian copyists? What were the scribal habits and tendencies? Is it possible to establish the original text of the New Testament? How do paleographers date the ancient manuscripts? How has the Greek New Testament text come down to us? How did textual variations and manuscript families arise? Just how many textual variants are there and how are they to be counted? What guarantee do we have as to the reliability of the Greek text? What are the principles and rules of textual criticism and how are they to be applied, so that we can get back the original reading? What are the collation and classification of manuscripts? What is the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method (CBGM) and can it be trusted? How reliable are our master (critical) Greek texts of the New Testament (WH/NA28/UBS5)? Why can we be confident that the literal translations (ASV / RSV / NASB / UASV) are providing for its readers the faithful Word of God? Their work on THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT is carried out with an apologetical mindset, to assist Christians in their defense of God's Word.
