Responding to these conflicts requires concerted action to manage the crises – the violence, the political discord, and the humanitarian consequences of prolonged fighting. It is also necessary to address the long-term social and economic impacts of conflict, to rebuild communities, societies and states that have been torn apart. To accomplish this requires the involvement of institutions and groups rarely considered in formal official African conflict management activities: schools, universities, religious institutions, media, commercial enterprises, legal institutions, civil society groups, youth, women and migrants. These groups and organizations have an important role to play in building a sense of identity, fairness, shared norms and cohesion between state and society – all critical components of the fabric of peace and security in Africa. This volume brings together leading experts from Africa, Europe and North America to examine these critical social institutions and groups, and consider how they can either improve or impede peaceful conflict resolution. The overarching questions that are explored by the authors are: What constitutes social cohesion and resilience in the face of conflict? What are the threats to cohesion and resilience? And how can the positive elements be fostered and by whom? In essence, many people believed that what we now have is a system of modern day slavery where the rich exploit and enslave the poor. Whence the call for revolution to fundamentally change the greed-centered ideologies of tyranny, oppression, and exploitation on which the status quo is founded. Humanity is at a crossroads. We either climb to the mountaintop or slide down to the valleys of death. ere would be hope if we revisit and critically evaluate the official narrative of history imposed by "the victors". There would be hope if we start a genuine conversation about narratives. There would be hope if we start a culture of careful listening. There would be hope if we seek to attain a deeper human understanding of life and the real meaning of the pursuit of happiness. It is time to learn the lessons of old, engage in a rethinking of the human story of barbarism and civilization, and invest in serving the common good of all people. When people open their minds and hearts, they can attain a new awakening and a liberation capable of leading us to realize, at this eleventh hour, a New 21st Century Humanism whose time has come. With the exception of Liberia, this area welcomed independence in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. This initial enthusiasm faded away as the area gradually faced economic, social and political difficulties. These problems, coupled with conflicting and competing interests, occasionally resulted in civil wars, disputes and wars between neighboring countries. Except for the long lasting Nigerian Civil War, all the conflicts that broke out were quickly settled and were not of the scale of conflicts that occurred in the areas of the Horn of Africa and in the central region of Africa. These areas have been in conflict for many years. However, peace disturbances in West Africa pointed out the precariousness of the new nations and the weaknesses of the new institutions. Grounded in this perception and drawing on lessons learned from the early disputes and wars, the 16 nations of West Africa joined together and created structures designed to preserve peace.

The work was based on a synoptical review of related literature actions and policies. An attempt was also made in classifying the different types of conflicts and related resolution strategies. Africa has been embroiled in a plethora of intra- and interstate conflicts. Most of these conflicts had a transnational character and generated consequences that had implications for regions beyond those in which they occurred. The quest for peace on the continent had remained a critical subject matter, which was at the core of the establishment of both the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and its successor, the African Union (AU). African conflicts are classified into six groups as follows: interethnic conflicts, interstate conflicts, liberation conflicts, civil rights conflicts, annexationist conflicts, and political transition conflicts. The key AU Organ for promoting peace and security on the continent is the Peace and Security Council (PSC) which is the standing decision-making organ of the AU for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts. The Continental Early Warning System (CEWS) is one of the pillars of the African Peace and Security Architecture Leone in the early years of the ECOWAS/ ECOWAS Cease-Fire Operation Monitoring Operation Group (ECOMOG) contributed to the consolidation of mechanisms for conflict prevention and peace building in West Africa. Africa has made remarkable progress in resolving many complex and old conflicts across the continent. Despite this progress, however, millions of people continued to be adversely affected by the consequences of conflict. It is also obvious that the peace achieved is fragile and can not be sustained in the long term, so long as the underlying causes and the needs of the affected populations are not effectively addressed.
