Book excerpt: The Pursuit of God is an inspirational guide for Christians seeking to get closer to God, written by an American Christian pastor A. W. Tozer. In one of his most famous books Tozer identifies one of the major problems of the Christian Church. He suggests that the Church is making a new type of Christian who understands the Christian doctrine better than ever throughout the history, but still fails to understand what it really means to be a follower of Christ. Having identified the problem, Tozer offers a beautiful solution that is more practical and mystical than theological. He encourages the Christian to take the seeking of God and make it the foundation upon which their life is built on. Being a mystic, he focuses on experience, feeling and hearing God's voice as important to faith.

Book excerpt: Written during a train trip in the late 1940s, The Pursuit of God shows how God pursues humans to draw them into a relationship with Himself, while humans thirst after the things of God—though they attempt to fill this thirst with things other than worship of their Creator. Tozer explores different aspects of this desire within the human heart, calling readers to examine what they believe and put aside preconceived ideas that disrupt this relationship with God. “It is a solemn thing,” he writes, “to see God’s children starving while actually seated at the Father’s table. This book is a modest attempt to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him.”

Book excerpt: Recent Update: NASB Scriptures To have found God and still to pursue Him is a paradox of love, scorned indeed by the too-easily-satisfied religious person, but justified in happy experience by the children of the burning heart. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux stated this holy paradox in a musical four-line poem that will be instantly understood by every worshipping soul: We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread, And long to feast upon Thee still: We drink of Thee, the Fountainhead And thirst our souls from Thee to fill. Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire after God. Let A. W. Tozer’s pursuit of God spur you also into a genuine hunger and thirst to truly know God.

Tozer’s The Pursuit of God is a classic Christian devotional book that explores the nature of the believer’s relationship with God. In it, Tozer emphasizes the importance of pursuing a deep and intimate relationship with God, rather than simply seeking religious knowledge or following a set of rules. Tozer argues that the pursuit of God requires a complete surrender of oneself to Him, as well as a willingness to embrace the mysteries and paradoxes of faith. He also stresses the importance of cultivating a life of prayer and meditation, and of seeking to experience the presence of God in every aspect of one’s life. Throughout The Pursuit of God, Tozer offers practical advice for those who desire to grow in their relationship with God. He encourages readers to seek God with a whole heart, to trust in His goodness and love, and to allow the Holy Spirit to transform their hearts and minds. Ultimately, Tozer’s message is one of hope and encouragement, reminding believers that the pursuit of God is not a burdensome duty, but a joyful and fulfilling journey that leads to abundant life and spiritual growth. In 2000, The Pursuit of God was named to Christianity Today’s list of 100 “Books of the Century.” This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Prepare yourself for a deeply meaningful and enjoyable experience. Here is the bestselling Christian classic written during a train trip from Chicago to Texas in the late 1940's. Tozer wrote all night, the words coming to him as fast as he could put them down. Althought written in such a remarkably short period of time, the depth, clarity and completeness of Tozer's message has made "The Pursuit of God" an enduring favorite. Whether you are thirsting for more of God or do not yet know of the "mighty longing after God" that so consumed A.W. Tozer's life and ministry, The Pursuit of God will draw you into a deep, abiding relationship with the One who "nourishes the soul." This spiritual masterpiece exposes the roadblocks that keep us from fully knowing God, reveals our responsibility of the pursuit, and ultimately leads us into the very presence of God Himself.

Book excerpt: During a train trip from Chicago to Texas in the late 1940s, A.W. Tozer began to write "The Pursuit of God." He wrote all night, and when the train arrived at his destination, the rough draft was done. The depth of this book has made it an enduring favorite. Readers cannot help but hear the voice of God calling them to a deeper relationship with Him while reading this amazing classic. From beginning to end, each page in "The Pursuit of God" is an impassioned plea for the reader to abandon "comfortable Christianity" in order to truly know God as He desires to be known. This is the most important and foundational book of the Christian faith written by a man who wore holes in the knees of his pants from praying. "The Pursuit of God" challenges the reader to consider their own faith in Christ, and what they should be doing with that faith, in virtually every chapter. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing" should be required reading for anyone confessing Christ as their Lord. If you have not done so already, please read this book. Your life, and the lives of those you share this book with, will be forever enriched.

Book excerpt: In this hour of all-but-universal darkness one cheering gleam appears: within the fold of conservative Christianity there are to be found increasing numbers of persons whose religious lives are marked by a growing hunger after God Himself. They are eager for spiritual realities and will not be put off with words, nor will they be content with correct "interpretations" of truth. They are athirst for God, and they will not be satisfied till they have drunk deep at the Fountain of Living Water. This is the only real harbinger of revival which I have been able to detect anywhere on the religious horizon. It may be the cloud the size of a man's hand for which a few saints here and there have been looking. It can result in a resurrection of life for many souls and a recapture of that radiant wonder which should accompany faith in Christ, that wonder which has all but fled the Church of God in our day.But this hunger must be recognized by our religious leaders. Current evangelicalism has (to change the figure) laid the altar and divided the sacrifice into parts, but now seems satisfied to count the stones and rearrange the pieces with never a care that there is not a sign of fire upon the top of lofty Carmel. But God be thanked that there are a few who care. They are those who, while they love the altar and delight in the sacrifice, are yet unable to reconcile themselves to the continued absence of fire. They desire God above all. They are athirst to taste for themselves the "piercing sweetness" of the love of Christ about Whom all the holy prophets did write and the psalmists did sing.

He crumbles the lies we believe and calls us to the more sure way. In these pages, Tozer says what it means to truly be saved. It is not merely to assent to Jesus and go on our same old way, but to be conquered by the Almighty God and invaded by His Spirit. A saved person is a transformed person. Book excerpt: Is our Christianity that of the New Testament? "God and men and their relation to each other—this I believe to be all that really matters in the world, and that is what I have written about here." —A. W. Tozer Like a physician running a biopsy on lifeless faith, here A. W. Tozer offers one of the most compelling critiques of feigned spirituality you may ever read. In Of God and Men, Tozer exposes false religious notions and lifts up true New-Testament Christianity. A loving and gentle critique of culture and even the church, it reveals lies we unknowingly believe, godless practices we unknowingly do, and treasures of Christ we unknowingly ignore. A manifesto of true religion, Of God and Men will set your foot on the narrow path and lift your heart in soaring worship.

So it is in this Christian classic by the late pastor and evangelist A. W. Tozer. In The Pursuit of God, Tozer brings the mystics to bear on modern spirituality, grieving the hustle and bustle and calling for a slow, steady gaze upon God. With prophetic vigor and flowing prose, he urges us to replace low thoughts of God with lofty ones, to quiet our lives so we can know God’s presence. He reminds us that life apart from God is really no life at all. Tozer's bestseller, this book has been called "one of the all-time most inspirational books" by a panel of Christian magazine writers. And with this study guide, ideal for group or individual use, reflection and discussion questions will help you internalize the content and apply it to your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pursuit of God by A W TOZER Made of ten chapter plus the introduction, the pursuit of God is just not one of the many books wrote by A.W. Tozen about Christianity, God and the Christian message. The book is basically made to seem a path that would ideally guide the reader along his understanding of God. This book has the finality to guide not just attention and actions of the readers in the right way to reach the understanding of God but would like to forge their thoughts as well in order to make them follow a series of steps which would ideally drive them to an higher level of satisfaction and an higher level of Christianity. One of the ideas behind this work is that the priority of spend time taking care of spirituality and understanding the divine essence has been forgotten for too long. The reason of this fact is mainly attributable at a tendency to see religion and spirituality more as an hobby then as a passion and a dutie. For all these reasons what the author would like to do is to shake people' consciousness in order to delete this tendency and make the love for God shine again on Christians' lives. The author, in his book, says that the only way to highlight again the message of the Christianity is to pray and meditate with consciousness and determination to reach a deeper level of concentration about our soul. All the work is based on the message of God and on the need to keep this message and the divine as the heart of our essence since this is the only way we have to lead to peace and to emotional and spiritual safety and satisfaction.Into chapters of the book the author keep on remembering to his readers the importance of Christian's values, he encourage us to think about God in order to create into our mind a clear idea of him as of someone who is really and strongly into our lives. On the same idea are based also other works of this writer such as the most known which are: the root of right - precious gems of spirituality, What happened to adoration? and last but not least the research of God. All these book together would ideally let the reader know about the author's deep understanding of God and would help him to understand why and in which circumstances he betrayed his faith or did something that maybe is keeping him far from God and from his message of love and acceptance. Here is a masterly study of the inner life by a heart thirsting after God, eager to grasp at least the outskirts of His ways, the abyss of His love for sinners, and the height of His unapproachable majesty--and it was written by a busy pastor in Chicago! Who could imagine David writing the twenty-third Psalm on South Halsted Street, or a medieval mystic finding inspiration in a small study on the second floor of a frame house on that vast, flat checker-board of endless streets Where cross the crowded ways of life Where sound the cries of race and clan, In haunts of wretchedness and need, On shadowed threshold dark with fears, And paths where hide the lures of greed ... But even as Dr. Frank Mason North, of New York, says in his immortal poem, so Mr. Tozer says in this book: Above the noise of selfish strife We hear Thy voice, O Son of Man. My acquaintance with the author is limited to brief visits and loving fellowship in his church. There I discovered a self-made scholar, an omnivorous reader with a remarkable library of theological and devotional books, and one who seemed to burn the midnight oil in pursuit of God. His book is the result of long meditation and much prayer. It is not a collection of sermons. It does not deal with the pulpit and the pew but with the soul athirst for God. The chapters could be summarized in Moses' prayer, "Show me thy glory," or Paul's exclamation, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!" It is theology not of the head but of the heart.

Book excerpt: True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time. The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say, "speak to the condition" of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation. The message of this book does not grow out of these times but it is appropriate to them. It is called forth by a condition which has existed in the Church for some years and is steadily growing worse. I refer to the loss of the concept of majesty from the popular religious mind. The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic.
