Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Purgatorio of Dante Alighieri: Rendered Into Spenserian English This little book does not pretend in any way to add to the knowledge of Dante: it is only an attempt to make him more readable. For those who can follow the Italian there are already numberless translations in verse and prose, but for those who can not or will not, none of these are of much service: neither modern verse, especially when hampered by elaborate rhyme, nor literal prose can reproduce at once the easy grace and the mingled quaintness and sublimity of the original. It is for this reason that the aid of Spenserian English has been sought. Spenser, like Dante, was a great poet: like him, he dealt with a world in part akin to, in part distinct from, the world of his day: his language, as is plain when it is compared with that of his contemporary Shakespeare, was purposely chosen and modulated to give an old-world and romantic setting to his theme: he too was quaint in diction: he too was sublime: he too, though in a far less degree than Dante, was a poet seer and would not have disdained "to make his undersong." Book excerpt: At the pinnacle of a grand and prolific career, W. S. Merwin has given us a shimmering new verse translation of the central section of Dante's Divine Comedy -- the Purgatorio. Led by Virgil, inspired by his love for Beatrice, Dante makes the arduous journey up the Mountain of Purgatory, where souls are cleansed to prepare them for the ultimate ascent to heaven. Presented with the original Italian text, and with Merwin's notes and commentary, this luminous new interpretation of Dante's great poem of sin, repentance, and salvation is a profoundly moving work of art and the definitive translation for our time. Book excerpt: A new translation by Anthony Esolen Illustrations by Gustave Doré Written in the fourteenth century by Italian poet and philosopher Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy is arguably the greatest epic poem of all time—presenting Dante’s brilliant vision of the three realms of Christian afterlife: Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. In this second and perhaps most imaginative part of his masterwork, Dante struggles up the terraces of Mount Purgatory, still guided by Virgil, in a continuation of his difficult ascent to purity. Anthony Esolen’s acclaimed translation of Inferno, Princeton professor James Richardson said, “follows Dante through all his spectacular range, commanding where he is commanding, wrestling, as he does, with the density and darkness in language and in the soul. It is living writing.” This edition of Purgatory includes an appendix of key sources and extensive endnotes—an invaluable guide for both general readers and students. From the Trade Paperback edition.
