Book excerpt: This volume applies the life-course approach to criminal careers, developed in the first book of the set, to crimes of deception, treason, and theft/white collar crimes. It discusses the web of influences affecting individuals to commit these crimes, as well as the society's attempts to detect and prevent them. Chapter 1 looks at deceit's impact on offenders, victims and society, and concludes that methods of detection (such as the polygraph), are not consistently reliable. Chapter 2 discusses treason. The American, Canadian, and British laws against treason are surveyed, and individual and collective motives (e.g.: ideology, power) for committing this crime are discussed. The characteristics of several spies and traitors illustrate their diversity and generally high social status. Chapter 3 examines different types of fraud, including embezzlement, forgery, arson, and confidence games. Motivation for business and political fraud is a two-sided phenomenon: the pull of money and power coupled with the push from financial pressures. Reducing the profitability of this type of crime may have stronger effects on crime rates than increasing punishment. Theft by force or stealth satisfies a complex group of desires - for excitement, independence, property, and gratified hostility. Yet the occurrence of shoplifting, employee theft, or burglary varies with opportunities to steal. (NCJRS, modified).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polygraph, often portrayed as a magic mind-reading machine, is still controversial among experts, who continue heated debates about its validity as a lie-detecting device. As the nation takes a fresh look at ways to enhance its security, can the polygraph be considered a useful tool? The Polygraph and Lie Detection puts the polygraph itself to the test, reviewing and analyzing data about its use in criminal investigation, employment screening, and counter-intelligence. The book looks at: The theory of how the polygraph works and evidence about how deceptivenessâ€"and other psychological conditionsâ€"affect the physiological responses that the polygraph measures. Empirical evidence on the performance of the polygraph and the success of subjects' countermeasures. The actual use of the polygraph in the arena of national security, including its role in deterring threats to security. The book addresses the difficulties of measuring polygraph accuracy, the usefulness of the technique for aiding interrogation and for deterrence, and includes potential alternativesâ€"such as voice-stress analysis and brain measurement techniques.

Backed by years of psychological research, this common-sense, practical guide reveals which parenting strategies promote truthfulness in children—and which ones don’t. Lying is a healthy and inevitable part of child development. But when do lies become a problem? In this book, psychologist Victoria Talwar, Director of the Talwar Child Development Lab at McGill University, presents practical, science-based strategies to address lying and foster truthfulness in children, from early childhood to the teenage years. Kids need to learn what honesty looks like in different social situations, and also how to tell the truth in ways that do not hurt others’ feelings—a complicated task! Parents and caregivers will learn how to use stories and examples to have proactive conversations with children about honesty, and how to model honest behavior for children. Talwar shows readers how to respond effectively when a child lies (as they inevitably will). Backed by years of psychological research, this common-sense, practical guide reveals which parenting strategies promote truthfulness in children—and which ones don’t.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitchell and Thompson have compiled the first interdisciplinary study of deception and its manifestations in a variety of animal species. Deception is unique in that it presents detailed explorations of the broadest array of deceptive behavior, ranging from deceptive signaling in fireflies and stomatopods, to false-alarm calling by birds and foxes, to playful manipulating between people and dogs, to deceiving within intimate human relationships. It offers a historical overview of the problem of deception in related fields of animal behavior, philosophical analyses of the meaning and significance of deception in evolutionary and psychological theories, and diverse perspectives on deception—philosophical, ecological, evolutionary, ethological, developmental, psychological, anthropological, and historical. The contributions gathered herein afford scientists the opportunity to discover something about the formal properties of deception, enabling them to explore and evaluate the belief that one set of descriptive and perhaps explanatory structures is suitable for both biological and psychological phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comparative Analysis of Corporate Fraud: Book Four examines corporate fraud in the United Kingdom compared with that of two civil law neighbouring countries, France and Germany, as well as the United States. The objective of the study is to discover how fraud occurs, how the two different legal systems treat fraud, contributing factors, and if recommendations were made to authorities in an attempt to combat this illegal activity. The UK can learn much from the French legal system and the way France prosecutes corporations. Germany's Criminal Code is equally comprehensive in its prescriptive definitions of fraud, especially corporate fraud. Although the UK is striving for a general law against fraud, the UK Fraud Offence Bill is very inadequate, lacking detailed solutions. The UK has become entrenched in upholding legal privilege, bowing to intense lobbying by the legal profession. And the use of electronic evidence, vital in prosecuting modern corporate fraud, remains overlooked. The attitude toward corporate fraud in the UK remains laissez-faire. By analysing corporate fraud in the US, France, and Germany, author Sally Ramage highlights examples that the UK can take from these countries that combat corporate fraud without derogation of established international human rights.
