It is true, his soul was stirred, but cruel facts stirred the soul of even the Son of God. If sometimes the author's spirit flames with indignation, let it be remembered that it is against heartless tyranny, and in defense of long silent and outraged innocence. Strike This sweeping reduction included all classes, and the laborers were compelled to work for from 70 cents to per day, all this in the face of the fact that when a reduction was made three years ago, the men were told that as long as the shops stood there would never be another cut in the wages of those who worked upon the Pullman sleepers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railroad Strike of 1894: The Statements of the Pullman Company and the Report of the Commission, Together With an Analysis of the Issues The main purpose of the Church Social Union is to stimulate and assist careful study of the present industrial situation. It is fitting, therefore, that it should begin its new season of work by inviting its members to give their quiet and impartial attention to the main facts in the history of the greatest industrial struggle yet seen in this country, - the Chicago strike of last year, - and to ponder soberly the principles involved. For this purpose, there are herewith put into the hands of each of the members, the Report of the U. S. Strike Commission and Mr. Pullman's Statement. Whatever criticism may be called for by either of these documents, it is evident that they are each of them at least deserving of consideration. The U. S. Strike Commission had exceptional means of arriving at an accurate knowledge of the facts of the case; and the reputation of its chairman, the Hon. Carroll D. Wright, as a statistician and economic investigator, is so high in America and Europe that his judgment as to the facts must be listened to with respect. Mr. Pullman is an extremely able and successful business man, and the statement he has put forward has undoubtedly been prepared with the aid of the most skilful advisers attainable. To assist the members of the C. S. U. to arrive at some conclusions concerning the mass of contentions now put before them, the Committee venture to lay before them certain notes and memoranda. They would urge their members, however, before going further, first to read rapidly through both the accompanying documents. Each, in its different way, is so forcible that members who have scanty leisure, having read one, will possibly think that there is nothing more to be said, and that it is hardly worth while to read the other. For the purpose, however, which this Society has at heart, it is of the utmost importance that whichever may chance to have been read first, the other should then be read also. And members are urged not to content themselves with newspaper summaries, but to read both right through. Having done this, they will be in a position to go over the subject once more, more critically; and for this purpose they may find it useful to follow the lines of thought here laid down. It need hardly be said that if this publication is taken up and glanced through, put down and forgotten, as we read newspapers, it will be useless. It is hoped that members will keep it by them, and recur to it again and again for quiet and sustained consideration. Describing both its immediate results in business and its far-reaching effects on trade unionism, the author treats the dramatic story of the strike no as an isolated conflict, but as a culminating explosion in labor-capital relations. Woven into the narrative is the rise and decline of the extraordinary Pullman experiment. To all outward appearances a philanthropic project conceived by a generous employer for his employees, the "model town" of George Pullman developed into a kind of medieval barony, operated with an iron hand. This experiment is carefully traced in all its varying aspects, with emphasis on its contribution to the origin of the strike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A centenary edition of this classic of labor journalism, industrial history and strike-support activism. During the heroic Pullman strike and boycott of 1894, a young Methodist minister defied the conventions of company-town self-censorship by writing this searing expose of the dictatorial and penny-pinching regime of multimillionaire George M Pullman. That the Rev. Carwardine suffered immediate exile from his Pullman church suggests how deeply threatened the giant railroad manufacturing and operating company was by his plainly written book. Filled with appreciation for meaningful details of the everyday lives of diverse workers with common problems, and with a balanced admiration for the leadership of Eugene V Debs, The Pullman Strike vividly shows how a great experiment in industrial unionism like the American Railway Union could arise. Aware of the vast power and ruthlessness of the Pullman Company, Carwardine also suggests why the union was unable to prevail.

In this wide-ranging collection, leading labor historians use the prism of the Pullman strike to broaden our understanding of the crisis of the 1890s. By examining the strike in the context of continuities and changes in labor organization, the influences of gender and community, the public representation and contested meaning of labor conflict, the emergence of a new politics of progressive reform, the development of a regulatory state, and a changing legal environment, these essays resituate the Pullman conflict in its historical context. Illuminating one of the most important events in labor's past, The Pullman Strike and the Crisis of the 1890s testifies to the pivotal importance of the Pullman conflict and its aftermath for understanding the course of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the 1894 Pullman Strike, one of the most consequential clashes between labor and capital that paralyzed America’s railroad system. The Gilded Age saw rapid economic growth, expansion of industrialization, and real wage growth. Yet between 1800 and 1900 there were nearly 37,000 strikes, and the Pullman Strike reflected the broad dissatisfaction and unrest among American workers. The book consists of an engaging narrative, analysis of existing scholarship, sidebars, and primary source documents which collectively answer why the Pullman Strike is so critical to the American Experience: it exposed the limits of paternalistic capitalism, revealed the extraordinary power of big business, introduced the use of injunctions to stop strikes, and launched the career of the iconic labor leader Eugene Debs. Overall, it reveals what struggles workers encountered when forming unions, the changing role of government regarding the economy, and the threat that unchecked big business posed to democracy. The Pullman Strike is useful for all undergraduate students who study the Gilded Age, industrial relations, and labor, urban, and economic history in the United States.
