Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the employment of the work of Slavoj Žižek and his engagement with the Apostle Paul, Axton argues that Paul in Romans 6-8 understands sin as a lie grounding the subject outside of Christ, and salvation is an exposure and displacement of this lie. The theological significance of Žižek (along with Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan) is his demonstration of the pervasive and systemic nature of this lie and its description as he finds it in Romans 7. The specific overlap of the two disciplines of psychology and theology is found in the psychoanalytic understanding that the human Subject or the psyche is structured in three registers: the symbolic, the imaginary and the real. These three registers function like a lie analogous to the Pauline categories of law, ego, and the 'body of death' which constitute Paul's dynamic of sin's deception. Axton argues that if sin is understood as a lie grounding the Subject, the exposure of the lie or the dispelling of any notion of mystery connected to sin is integral to salvation and the reconstructing of the Subject in Christ. While the lie of sin is mediated by the law, new life in the Spirit is not through the law but is a principle unto itself, which though it accounts for the law, is beyond the law.

Book Synopsis Sin: A Guide for the Perplexed by : Derek R. Nelson
Download or read book Sin: A Guide for the Perplexed written by Derek R. Nelson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity concerns itself with salvation. But salvation implies something from which one must be saved, as reconciliation implies an estrangement and redemption a loss. The classical theological symbol naming the problem to which salvation is the solution is sin. Interpreting the meaning of sin, however, has become difficult for two reasons: sin has become a taboo subject in popular discourse, and has acquired an extremely broad meaning in recent theology. Sin: A Guide for the Perplexed is intended as a mid-level, comprehensive introduction to the notion of sin and its significance for Christian theology. Nelson situates and interprets biblical material on sin, and then offers a lucid history of the doctrine. He elucidates Augustine's conception of original sin and defends it against its many caricatures. Special attention is paid to sin as an ordinary, yet highly interruptive, phenomenon in the lives of individuals. This is supplemented by a careful look at the non-individualistic dimensions of sin, and an appreciation of how sin relates to other key theological commitments.
Book Synopsis Mirrors of Self by : Jonathan P. Badgett
Download or read book Mirrors of Self written by Jonathan P. Badgett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodox Christology maintains that Jesus Christ is both truly God and truly human. As such, he is the key to knowing both God and self. In a series of applications of christological anthropology, Mirrors of Self develops this epistemic premise in dialogue with a diversity of Christian and secular, historical and modern perspectives. Aspects of human personhood, including the ever-elusive self, gain greater clarity and significance in the light of Christ’s person and work. At the center of individual human subjectivity, we encounter a broken, sin-blinded self in need of renewal and release. What healing we find comes to us as Christ’s ecological presence works in and through others—the mirrors of self whose instrumental agency Christ employs in service to his own redemptive ends.

Book Synopsis The Split Economy by : Nimi Wariboko
Download or read book The Split Economy written by Nimi Wariboko and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with Marx and Freud, scholars have attempted to identify the primary ethical challenge of capitalism. They have named injustice, inequality, repression, exploitative empires, and capitalism's psychic hold over all of us, among other ills. Nimi Wariboko instead argues that the core ethical problem of capitalism lies in the split nature of the modern economy, an economy divided against itself. Production is set against finance, consumption against saving, and the future against the present. As the rich enjoy their lifestyle, their fellow citizens live in servitude. The economy mimics the structure of our human subjectivity as Saint Paul theorizes in Romans 7: the law constitutes the subject as split, traversed by negativity. The economy is split, shot through with a fundamental antagonism. This fundamental negativity at the core of the economy disturbs its stability and identity, generating its destructive drive. The Split Economy develops a robust theoretical framework at the intersection of continental philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, theology, and political economy to reveal a fundamental dynamic at the heart of capitalism.
Book Synopsis An Apostle for Atheists by : Ole Jakob Løland
Download or read book An Apostle for Atheists written by Ole Jakob Løland and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a modern philosopher to make of Paul, the apostle? What do non-Christian philosophers in Europe gain from reading ancient letters from Christianity's first great ideologue, and letters addressed to groups of people lost to time? To ask this question is to acknowledge that despite religious faith being regarded by many as a stage that our modern societies have left behind, contemporary philosophers are confronted with questions such as multiculturalism and religious fundamentalism in the wake of immigration and the increasing presence of religious minorities. The Letters of Paul have gained the interest of several philosophers, and the interpretations of the apostle have taken many forms. Looking closely at Paul's letters which have gained most interest from atheist philosophers, The First Letter to the Corinthians and the Letter to the Romans, this book offers an overview of the various ways they have been understood. It pays close attention also to the readings of Paul in the three thinkers, Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud canonized as two of the great pillars of the modern critique of religion with Spinoza as one of their important predecessors. Confronting these readings with insights not only from the more recent philosophical readings of the apostle but also from historical-critical scholarship on the Bible, this book lifts the veil over a new picture of the apostle as a figure with potential value for non-Christians and atheists. An Apostle for Atheists leaves us with ideas that compel us to reconsider Paul's negative reputation for secular modernity and appreciate him as a figure of a radically new politics as well as a renewed psychoanalysis.

Book Synopsis The Bible Doctrine of Salvation by : C. Ryder Smith
Download or read book The Bible Doctrine of Salvation written by C. Ryder Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the development of the Doctrines of Salvation and Atonement from one end of the Bible to the other. It seeks to show that a single doctrine gradually emerges, which can be best stated in psychological terms. The chief Old Testament contribution is found in the Prophets, the ritual system furnishing no more than a secondary source. Under the New Testament there is a detailed expository attempt to show that, while the experience of salvation from sin through the Death of Christ is the fundamental fact, the explanation of that experience, starting from a large and varied use of the Fifty-third of Isaiah, issues in what may be called a 'societary' doctrine of the Atonement. The author claims that Saint Paul, the Writer to the Hebrews, and the Writer of the Johannine Books, all hold this doctrine, though each states it in his own way.
Book Synopsis Of Guilt And Grace by : Matthew LaMaster
Download or read book Of Guilt And Grace written by Matthew LaMaster and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We don't like to talk about tragedy. It's insensitive, dark, and gloomy. Especially in church. We would much rather talk about the stories that make our hearts happy and joyful. Yet, the reality is that when we don't understand the dark depth of the human heart, we will never know the magnificent vistas of God's salvation. Tragedy is an essential reality for understanding the space of the gospel story. Few tragedies fit this mold better than that of Achan in Joshua 7. Achan's theft of sacred property and the resultant panic led Israel down a dark path. It was only with God's revelation of his action that this scourge was made known. However, the most tragic part of Achan's tale is that God's grace was offered out to him and he did not take it. The darkness of Achan's story heightens the glory of the gospel. The sin that Achan committed underscores the salvation that God offers. The cult he bore reveals the grace that is offered to us. Of Grace and Guilt is written to help us understand this reality. It is written to underscore the darkness of sin and therefore to examine the light of salvation. It is written for us to see the gracious hands of a loving God offered to us. The question before us is whether or not we will take what Achan could not. "Matt's book, 'Of Guilt and Grace' is a masterpiece of understanding the impact of sin and its ongoing ramifications. The good news about sin is God's grace. Matt elegantly explains how God's grace is the antidote to our sin issue. 'Of Guilt and Grace' is well thought out and a must read for anyone desiring to understand the relationship between our sin and God's grace. I would highly recommend this book!" - Tyson Priest, D. Min, Pastor, the River, Lapel, In. & Motivational Speaker. "Ten very helpful lessons on sin, a disturbing and polarizing subject that many ministers wish to elude for the sake of pastoral preservation. Matthew LaMaster illuminates a haunting story of God's wrath toward sin in a way that is both theologically demanding and accessible. Read with care, LaMaster pulls no punches when it comes to the serious and communal effects of our sin. Read with hope, for nothing is presented that is not saturated with God's mercy and no transgression so abominable that it cannot be healed by Christ's grace." - Tyler Turdici, Associate Pastor, the Oasis, Aurora, IL. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Matthew LaMaster is the pastor of Southern Heights Christian Church in Anderson, Indiana. He is an editor at Theology Magazine. He is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute (BA, MDiv) And is also currently a doctoral student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline and fall of old-time religion is finally a reality in the U.S. According to the Pew Research Center results of May 12, 2015, the number of Americans who don't affiliate with a particular religion has grown to 56 Million. "Nones" are the 2nd largest faith group in the U.S. There is a new emerging consciousness of Spirituality. It is sometimes described as a "search for the sacred." It can also be the substance of one's inner journey in relation to the Source from which all things come. The tired and worn mantra of traditional Protestant evangelical, fundamentalist, and Roman Catholic Christian theology called "Sin and Salvation: " theology has served the goals of power and control for the Church for centuries. It was a favorite tool of both political and ecclesiastical groups. Other religions also make use of dogma and authoritarian notions like sin and salvation in their efforts to exercise control, and maintain power over human behavior. The Jesus of the Christian religion was not the blood sacrifice of some malicious and sadistic God as portrayed by Mel Gibson in his movie "The Passion of the Christ." If you have bought into the regressive and punitive lair of the "Sin and Salvation" paradigm you are in the clutches of an unhealthy religion. The field of psychology provides you with a positive and healthy means of escape from the mind control, destructive concepts of a failed theology, and a failed and fraudulent psychology of mankind. The new paradigm of healthy religion shatters the shackles of the old-time and present day religious hucksters. This new path and new paradigm will provide you with a breath of fresh air that is long overdue.
