Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children learn some of their earliest lessons about sharing, competition, and compromise through negotiations with their siblings. As early as age 3, children can recognize special problems their brother or sister has due to a developmental disability or chronic illness. "Brothers, sisters, and special needs" shows professionals and parents how they can help a child's understanding of disability or chronic illness develop in a healthy, adaptive direction during the preschool and elementary school years. This explicit curriculum and activity guide, designed especially for children ages 3 to 8, sets up a series of fun work-shops to help siblings get to know their own personal strengths, recognize positive characteristics of their handicapped brother or sister and other family members, and learn ways of coping constructively with stressful family events. "Brothers, sisters, and special needs" will be of interest to professionals, early interventionists, parents, social workers, psychologists, and pediatricians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book concerns itself primarily with the mothers of mentally handicapped children. It discusses the problems of assistance that they may have experienced from their families, the community, or the available services. Whilst arguing for far more support for mothers when they are the main carer, this book also suggests reasons why some families are more easily able to cope with the problems of caring for severely handicapped children. This study is based on research that was conducted for and funded by the Department of Health and Social Security between 1973 and 1976.

Book excerpt: The present study1 examined whether siblings of children with autism were at risk for experiencing psychosocial adjustment difficulties, and whether severity of the child's disability and siblings' knowledge of autism were related to siblings' adjustment. This study also systematically evaluated the effectiveness of a sibling support group. Participants included 31 siblings of children with autism, between ages 6 to 16, that received group intervention. Results indicated that these siblings exhibited significantly more internalizing problems than average, but did not show more externalizing behaviours, total problem behaviours, or poor self-concepts. In this group, there were no significant relationships between severity of the child's disability and siblings' knowledge of autism with siblings' psychosocial adjustment. However, siblings did significantly improve their self-concepts and knowledge of autism from the beginning to the end of the sibling support group. Clinical implications are discussed and directions for future research are presented. 1These data were collected as part of the ongoing study, "Sibling Groups for Siblings of Autistic Children" of the Treatment, Research and Education for Autism and Developmental Disorders (TRE-ADD) Program at Thistletown Regional Centre, investigated by Dr. Adrienne Perry and her collaborators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting is always a vital and challenging task. Even more vital and challenging is the task of parenting a child with a disability. When there is more than one child in the family, all parents want to share their time, energy, and love with all their children--and all siblings sometimes wonder if they are being treated fairly. When one child in a family has a disability, all this becomes more complex. Parents and sisters and brothers often feel that for them, It isn't fair. Selected and compiled from two decades of The Exceptional Parent magazine, It Isn't Fair! reveals first-hand the myriad feelings of normal brothers and sisters at all stages as they grapple with caretaking, frustration, powerlessness, jealousy, guilt, and worry about their special siblings. Breaking the wall of silence that deference has imposed on their experiences, here are the siblings of the child with autism, the child injured at birth, the child institutionalized after many years at home. Parents offer their own experiences and perspectives on their children, and they illustrate the importance of sharing information within the family. The editors also include professional commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a relatively brief period of time pediatric psychology as an organized field has evolved and expanded as a science and in clinical practice. Reflecting a newer focus on family roles in health and illness, the present volume is relevant to a variety of fields because family issues and pediatric medicine inherently interact with numerous disciplines and approaches. This volume fills the need for a resource indicating research advancements that links pediatric psychology and pediatrics with family issues. The articles -- selected from special issues of Pediatric Psychology -- cover such topics as chronic illnesses and handicapping conditions, failure to thrive, spina bifida, recurrent abdominal pain, and health promotion. These pediatric conditions are considered in terms of concomitant psychosocial effects on parents and siblings, family resources and environment, adjustment and maladjustment, interventions and programming utilizing and assisting families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all the work on disability in previous years, there had been surprisingly little done on a subject of central importance – the social and psychological needs of teenagers with disabilities. Originally published in 1982, the purpose of this timely book was both to review the literature and to report an extensive study of the nature of the psychological problems, the quality of social life and the adequacy of the services available to a substantial group of teenagers with disabilities in the last years at school, with a follow-up study of half their number a year later. The authors show that many of these teenagers, including those with a mild disability, are often unhappy, worried and isolated from their peers. While the majority of the teenagers with disabilities, whether in ordinary or special schools, made friends at school, these friendships were rarely sustained outside. After leaving school the degree of social isolation is as great, and often worse. Among these teenagers the incidence of psychological problems was three to four times higher than for a control group, the most common being worry, depression, misery, fearfulness and lack of self-confidence and self-esteem. For the most part, the teenagers with disabilities were likely to be immature and ill-prepared to cope with adult life. These findings underline the need for a counselling service while the teenagers are still at school, and supporting services when they have left. Like other teenagers, those in this study were unprepared for the possibility of not having a job, and had not thought how to organize their lives if a job was not available or feasible. The authors draw attention to the large proportion of people with disabilities without occupation after leaving school, and the high dissatisfaction with day centres. Perhaps their most important finding is the need to rationalize the piecemeal and overlapping provision of help for school-leavers with disabilities. In the meantime, their book provides a wealth of information of direct use to those concerned with teenagers with disabilities and their families, whether in school provision, careers advice, work placement and alternatives to work, social services, counselling, medical services and further education. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1982. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, the significance of siblings in children's development and adjustment has been widely recognized, and research on brothers and sisters has increased dramatically. Bringing together exciting research on siblings by leading developmental psychologists and clinicians, this volume's contributions were originally presented at the First International Symposium on Siblings held in Leiden. This book focuses on both the significance of siblings as influences on individual development, and on the importance of the relationship in families with sick, disabled or troubled children. It covers the recent developmental research with chapters on the development of sibling relationships in early and middle childhood, the links between sibling relationships and those with parents, peers and friends, and the influence of siblings on children's adjustment. It then focuses on clinical issues such as siblings as sources of support for unhappy or sick children, or for children in disharmonious homes, and the vulnerability of siblings of disabled children. These clinical issues are discussed in practical terms by leading practitioners. Clear in presentation, comprehensive in its coverage of the exciting recent research, and full of practical insights, this volume brings to light important developmental principles, and raises questions regarding the assumptions about family processes and how different relationships within the family affect one another. For family researchers, those interested in the individual development of children, and for clinicians concerned about the impact of troubled or disabled children on their siblings or the potential of siblings as therapists, this book will be the key. No other book covers the recent research in this important topic and discusses the clinical issues in depth and in practical terms.
