Book excerpt: When Hanna Sillitoe appeared on Dragons' Den, every Dragon offered her investment. In her first book, Radiant, she shares the lifestyle changes and recipes that transformed her life. For more than 20 years, Hanna suffered from severe psoriasis, eczema and acne - sometimes so badly that the only way to stop herself scratching was to wrap her body in clingfilm. When her doctor suggested the only remaining course of treatment was chemotherapy, she took matters into her own hands and cured herself through a change in diet and lifestyle. Beginning with a juice cleanse, Hanna takes you through a range of delicious, skin-loving meals including Turmeric and Ginger Chia Pudding, Immunity Ramen, Beet Burgers and even Clean Tiramisu. She also shows you how to create homemade beauty products, including an Avocado and Honey Facemask and Rosemary and Lemon Salt Scrub, which have gone on to inspire the eponymous skincare range for which she secured funding on BBC 2's Dragons' Den. Uplifting and inspiring for those who have been searching for the answer to seemingly unsolvable skin complaints, Hanna's programme is also suitable for those simply looking to improve their overall health and complexion. It's a recipe for good health and clear skin, from the inside out. Hanna is also the author of Skin Healing Expert: Your 5 pillar plan for calm clear skin

Book excerpt: About the Book For 25 years Andy Saunderson had lived with psoriasis. In lieu of any changes in the traditional ways of treating the skin condition, he decided to research whether there were any alternatives. He discovered there was a consensus amongst some that psoriasis can be managed in a different way. It can be treated by making changes to your diet and healing from within. Andy has devised a nine-stage process that includes over 100 modern and accessible recipes to assist those who have psoriasis. This cookbook can empower those that would like to take ownership of their skin condition, to reduce the appearance of it and in a healthy, natural way. About the Author I''ve had psoriasis for over 25 years. From just a few small patches in my early teens to being almost completely covered in my mid 20''s. My annual visits to the doctor had never brought up any surprises. No new advancements in medicine that eradicated my skin condition. I''d tried ointments, creams, steroids and phototherapy, but nothing ever alleviated my condition. In lieu of any changes, I decided to look at whether there were any alternative therapies out there. There were many companies ready to take my money in exchange for remedies that, in my experience, didn''t provide me with anything that I hadn''t been offered by my doctor or dermatologist. During this period of investigation, I did read a number of things which provided me with some hope. There was a consensus that psoriasis could be managed in a different way and treated by healing from within. Psoriasis has been described as the result of an over abundant accumulation of toxins in the body which are released through the skin. The skin eliminates these toxins in the form of psoriasis. So, in order to treat psoriasis, a different approach is to get to the root cause and heal the condition internally. The internal cleansing was done by eliminating these toxins which have accumulated over a number of years. It involved exploring my diet, concentrating on a high alkaline, low acid forming one. This included drinking various herbal teas and taking supplements to assist in healing my gut as well as reducing my intake of certain foods. I set out by listing all of the foods to avoid completely, then all of the foods which were allowed, highlighting those which were highly recommended. I explored additional things to incorporate into my diet and daily routine, in particular, juices and herbal teas. I devised a variety of dishes that would be suitable throughout the year and substituted foods that weren''t recommended, meaning that my compromise wasn''t an extreme one. Over many years of devising, cooking and eating my recipes, I have discovered that they have had a significant positive impact on my psoriasis. Making these changes has enabled me to take greater control of my psoriasis and with this book, I hope it will enable you to do the same. The Nine-Stage Process P.S.O.R.I.A.S.I.S = Problem, Solution, Organise, Reduce, Increase, Achieve, Start, Implement and Sustain. The 9 stages are - Problem - Psoriasis and a build-up of toxins in the body. Solution - A high alkaline and low acid diet. Organise - Shopping, planning for meals and incorporating cooking into your life. Reduce - Food and drink which are not good for you and your psoriasis. Increase - Your intake of what is good for you. Achieve - A reduction in irritation and inflamed skin. Start - A new habit of not saying ''I''ll start again on Monday''. Implement - All of these changes into your life to take control of your psoriasis. Sustain - Healthier looking skin and an improved quality of life. Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years, there has been increasing recognition of psoriatic arthritis as a distinct clinical entity. Psoriatic arthritis occurs mostly in patients with psoriasis and may affect up to 1% of the general population. It has many similarities to other forms of spondyloarthritis, and must be differentiated from related conditions. Given that most patients with psoriatic arthritis have skin and musculoskeletal diseases that significantly affect their quality of life and function, patients are ideally managed in a multidisciplinary clinic with rheumatologists, dermatologists and a nurse specialist, physical therapist and occupational therapist. Psoriatic Arthritis covers the epidemiology and diagnostic and classification criteria, describing the clinical features of the disease, including skin and nail involvement, articular, and other extra-articular manifestations. Laboratory features and imaging characteristics are covered in detail, along with co-morbidities and their impact. A comprehensive review of skin disease therapy is also provided, along with the various treatment options for joint disease, including traditional disease modifying therapy and newer biologic agents . This comprehensive yet concise and practical volume is the perfect guide to psoriatic arthritis for the busy practitioner, and will be of interest to trainees and specialists in rheumatology and dermatology.
