Book excerpt: This is a study of the most fascinating and idiosyncratic of all seventeenth-century figures. Like its famous predecessor The Cheese and The Worms: The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller, it explores the everyday life and mental world of an extraordinary yet humble figure. Born in Lincolnshire with a family of Cambridgeshire origins, Thomas Totney (1608-1659) was a London puritan, goldsmith and veteran of the Civil War. In November 1649, after fourteen weeks of self-abasement, fasting and prayer, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation. Taking the prophetic name TheaurauJohn Tany and declaring himself 'a Jew of the Tribe of Reuben' descended from Aaron the High Priest, he set about enacting a millenarian mission to restore the Jews to their own land. Inspired prophetic gestures followed as Tany took to living in a tent, preaching in the parks and fields around London. He gathered a handful of followers and, in the week that Cromwell was offered the crown, infamously burned his bible and attacked Parliament with sword drawn. In the summer of 1656 he set sail from the Kentish coast, perhaps with some disciples in tow, bound for Jerusalem. He found his way to Holland, perhaps there to gather the Jews of Amsterdam. Some three years later, now calling himself Ram Johoram, Tany was reported lost, drowned after taking passage in a ship from Brielle bound for London. During his prophetic phase Tany wrote a number of remarkable but elusive works that are unlike anything else in the English language. His sources were varied, although they seem to have included almanacs, popular prophecies and legal treatises, as well as scriptural and extra-canonical texts, and the writings of the German mystic Jacob Boehme. Indeed, Tany's writings embrace currents of magic and mysticism, alchemy and astrology, numerology and angelology, Neoplatonism and Gnosticism, Hermeticism and Christian Kabbalah - a ferment of ideas that fused in a millenarian yearning for the hoped for

Those called to the prophetic office should understand that preparation for ministry is in character, not solely in the development of spiritual gifts. In this book, we will discuss how God builds the prophet and prophetic minister for ministry.

Al-Dabb gh shunned religious studies but, having reached illumination and met with the Prophet Mu ammad, he was able to explain any obscurities in the Qur n, ad ths and sayings of earlier Sufis. The resulting book, known as the Ibr z, describes how al-Dabb gh attained illumination and access to the Prophet, as well as his teachings about the Council of the godly that regulates the world, relations between master and disciple, the darkness in men s bodies, Adam s creation, Barzakh, Paradise and Hell, and much more besides. This encyclopaedia of Sufism with its many teaching stories and illustrations provides a window onto social life and religious ideasin Fez a generation or so before powerful outside forces began to play a role in the radical transformation of Morocco.

Book excerpt: The three-volume series titled The Presence of the Prophet in Early Modern and Contemporary Islam, is the first attempt to explore the dynamics of the representation of the Prophet Muhammad in the course of Muslim history until the present. This first collective volume outlines his figure in the early Islamic tradition, and its later transformations until recent times that were shaped by Prophet-centered piety and politics. A variety of case studies offers a unique overview of the interplay of Sunnī amd Shīʿī doctrines with literature and arts in the formation of his image. They trace the integrative and conflictual qualities of a “Prophetic culture”, in which the Prophet of Islam continues his presence among the Muslim believers. Book excerpt: Seven ships filled with gold, silver, and treasures of the Church sail from Hispania to escape invading Moors in the seventh century, going westward where the wind carries them under divine guidance. The foreigners and natives settle in an area now called Chaco Canyon to establish a religious center and build seven cities of gold and silver that historians and treasure hunters still talk about and seek. The people, and their cities of gold, disappear without a trace centuries before fortune hunters come seeking the cities and the wealth they contain. Only a select few people remain to oversee the secrets of the ancient people, their treasure, and the plan for using that treasure.
