Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... second and third persons singular of the subjunctive the analogical proportion stands: vofiev veTt: veiS ve i = Xvuptv Xurjre: xutjs Xujj. Since the inducing forms, Xuets and Xuei, contained, not diphthongs, but simple vowels of the quality which appeared elsewhere in the paradigm (pp. 124 ff.), the restored subjunctive forms contained, not 77i, but a monophthong of the same quality as that of the second person plural. Consequently we find very frequently such subjunctives as 8odrj, P. Petr. ii. 2. 1. 10 (260 B.C.). The frequent spelling with 77i in the subjunctive forms of late inscriptions and papyri is due in part to the influence of old documents with 77i in these forms but chiefly to the fact that the corresponding indicative forms were written with the digraph ei. The diphthongs ai and i, and also the restored 77i, lost their second element at various times in different parts of the Greek world. In Attica the loss occurred not far from 200 B.C.1 The change is reflected in the form of Greek loan-words in Latin; Thraex, tragoedus, etc., were borrowed in early times, while Thrax, Thracia, odeum are later forms. We have the explicit testimony of Strabo that i was silent in the dative singular (of the first and second declensions, of course): xiv. p. 648: Towoi yap x DEGREESpis rov i ypavaiKrjv alrlav obK exov.2 In the fifth century 77i, ai, and wi were all true diphthongs, and at and wt remained such in the fourth 1 Meisterhans-Schwyzer, p. 67. 2" For many write the datives without the i, and reject the custom (of writing them) which has no basis in nature." century. The first member of each was probably long and of the same quality as when monophthongal. Hence wi, rather...

Book excerpt: "The marriage of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne--for their contemporaries a model of true love and married happiness--was also a scene of revulsion and combat. T. Walter Herbert reveals the tragic conflicts beneath the Hawthorne's ideal of domestic fulfillment and shows how their marriage reflected the tensions within nineteenth-century society. In so doing, he sheds new light on Hawthorne's fiction, with its obsessive themes of guilt and grief, balked feminism and homosexual seduction, adultery, patricide, and incest." --Publisher description.

In this edition, Professor Allen has in particular revised the presentation of the controversial question of stress; the chapter on quantity has been extensively recast; and an appendix has been added on the names of the letters of the Greek alphabet. In addition to the new material, the supplementary notes of the second edition are now incorporated into the main text making this a very convenient book to use.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Classical Pronunciation of Greek, Latin and Scripture Proper Names: In Which the Words Are Accented and Divided Into Syllables Exactly as They Ought to Be Pronounced, According to Rules Drawn From Analogy and the Best Usage, to Which Are Added, Terminational Vocabularies of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin Proper Names Th: Critical Pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language naturally suggested an idea Of the present 'work. Proper names from the Greek and Latin form so considerable a part Of every cultivated living lan guage, that a Dictionary seems to be imperfect with cut them. Polite scholars, indeed, are seldom at a loss for the pronunciation of words they so frequently meet with in the learned languages; but there are great numbers Of respectable English scholars, who, having only a tincture Of classical learning, are much at a loss for a knowledge of this part of it. It is not only the learned professions that require this knowledge, but almost every one above the merely mechanical. The professors Of painting, statuary, and music, and those who admire their works readers of history, politics, poetry all who con verse Ou subjects ever so little above the vulgarhave so frequent occasion to pronounce these proper names, that whatever tends to render this pronun ciation easy must necessarily be acceptable to the Public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pronunciation of Greek and Latin Proper Names in English The method of using the exercises will, of course, vary with different teachers. Special emphasis should be placed upon syllabication (part III). The teacher should spell the word, taking care not to indicate the syllables. Each student should write the word, mark the accents, then. Te-write, dividing into syllables. The process should then be ex plained and rules quoted for every step.
