Book Synopsis From Bad Policy to Chaos in Somalia by : Jamil Mubarak
Download or read book From Bad Policy to Chaos in Somalia written by Jamil Mubarak and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-06-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of the economic policies of Somalia since 1970 is empirical in nature, employing political and economic analysis, economic theory, and econometric techniques, and argues that the governmental economic policy, policy responses to crises, and exogenous shocks have been bad for the long-term economic growth of the country. Despite significant foreign financed public investment, economic growth has been weak and real per capita income has declined. The intensifying economic crises contributed to the rapid deterioration of the political situation that led to the collapse of the Somali state in 1991. Since 1991, chaos and more destruction has followed as warlords scrambled for power, resulting in the resource base of the economy being eroded further and the country being reduced to warring clans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Somali people are fiercely nationalistic. Colonialism split them into five segments divided between four different powers. Thus decolonization and pan-Somalism became synonymous. In 1960 a partial reunification took place between British Somaliland and Somalia Italiana. Africa Confidential wrote at the time that the new Somali state would never be beset by tribal division but this discounted the existence of powerful clans within Somali society and the persistence of colonial administrative cultures. The collapse of parliamentary democracy in 1969 and the resulting army--and clanic--dictatorship that followed led to a civil war in the 'perfect' national state. It lasted fourteen years in the "British" North and is still raging today in the 'Italian' South. Somaliland "re-birthed" itself through an enormous solo effort but the viable nation so recreated within its former colonial borders was never internationally recognized and still struggles to exist economically and diplomatically. This book recounts an African success story where the peace so widely acclaimed by the international community has had no reward but its own lonely achievement.

Book Synopsis The Colonial Legacy in Somalia by : Paolo Tripodi
Download or read book The Colonial Legacy in Somalia written by Paolo Tripodi and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-08-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colonial Legacy in Somalia is an investigation into the relationship between Rome and Mogadishu, from the period of colonial administration to the recent dramatic events of Operation Restore Hope. It defines the first Italian incursions in the Horn of Africa, the history of the expansionist plans of an imperial late comer, such as Italy, and explores the decade of the Trusteeship Administration from 1950-1960 when Italy tried to introduce a new state system in Mogadishu: It analyzes the events of the 1970s and 1980s when Siad Barre's regime, in spite of his repressive and violent attitude, enjoyed strong support from the former colonial power. The book demonstrates a love-hate relationship between Rome and Mogadishu in the colonial and postcolonial period and examines the consequences of this interaction.

Book Synopsis The Globalization of the Cold War by : Max Guderzo
Download or read book The Globalization of the Cold War written by Max Guderzo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-04 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the globalisation of the Cold War in the years 1975-85, highlighting the transformation from bipolar US-Soviet competition to global confrontation. Offering a detailed analysis of this fundamental shift that occurred during this period, as well as the interconnections of this process with the new industrial-technological revolution, this book demonstrates how the United States returned to a position of global economic leadership. In so doing, the book aims to challenge the traditional and misleading paradigm that interprets the gradual development of the Cold War in basic bipolar terms; in fact, most of the factors triggering superpower attitudes and interplay were linked to a complex web of relations with their allies, as well as to the political, economic, social, ideological and military factors structurally intrinsic to the ‘peripheral’ regions where the confrontation actually took place. Many of the essays in this volume focus on the foreign and security policies of the United States, with the aim of reassessing the Carter administration as the foundation for Reagan’s final show-down with the Soviet Union. The contributors, however, go beyond the traditional patterns of foreign policy analysis, giving due attention to transnational phenomena and institutional histories that better explain the gradual transformation in the years that prepared the world for the post-Cold War globalisation era. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War studies, international history, US foreign policy, European politics and IR in general. Max Guderzo is Professor of the History of International Relations and holds the Jean Monnet Chair of the History of European Unification at the University of Florence. Bruna Bagnato is Associate Professor of the History of International Relations at the University of Florence.
Book Synopsis The Horn of Africa by : Peter Woodward
Download or read book The Horn of Africa written by Peter Woodward and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere is the crumbling of state structures more self-evident than in Somalia, the Sudan and Ethiopia. Drawing on a wide range of little-known material, this book presents an overview of structural disintegration in the Horn of Africa from the dual perspectives of domestic and international political developments.; The breakdown of these three major states is due, according to Woodward, to the ravages of civil war. He argues that, while all three conflicts arise from domestic issues, their scale has been magnified by international involvement which has also linked the three countries together, with Ethiopia as the crux.; The Horn of Africa is a study of the national and international dimensions of these conflicts, examining not only the relations between the three countries, but also their relations with a variety of regional actors as well as with the superpowers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 of this book presents a brief overview of macro-economic performance of the Somali economy and more detailed sectoral analyses of rural development and employment, urban informal sectors, women's employment and income-generating activities, and education, manpower and employment with an additional focus on vocational training. As a result of the Somali government's interest in data collection and methodological issues, Technical papers 1-6 are presented in Part 2 of the report and are pertinent in terms of improving the current fragile data base of the country (national accounts, GDP, poverty, population). Part 3 of the report presents ten project proposals which JASPA considers critically important in leading to a better understanding of the Somali economy and generating more employment and incomes for Somalia's vulnerable groups.
