Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Law and Delinquency, grade: A, , course: Issues In Justice, language: English, abstract: Conflict in any organization can arise over breakdowns in communication, values conflicts, poorly defined work policies and demands, personality clashes, adversarial management, wages and benefits, employee distrust of authority, and external factors such as technological change and economic conditions. Whether or not conflict benefits people and organizations depends on the intensity of the conflict and how well the conflict is managed. There are several topics that must be explored when examining conflict in criminal justice organizations, such as, how conflict is defined, the types of conflict behaviors exhibited by people in organizations, conflict management, and the role of conflict in criminal justice organizations. Conflict whether between individuals or groups is inevitable in any organization regardless of its size and function. The consequences of conflict can range from a minor inconvenience to major losses in productivity and revenue. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal Justice and the Policy Process develops a synthesized policy making model that explains how complex justice policy is developed, implemented, and evaluated. Unlike other texts, this study weaves together important aspects of several competing explanations of policy choice into a single model. Further, this text emphasizes the importance of implementing policy as an important component in the ultimate outcome of policy decisions. The book fills a void in introducing students to the policy making process coupled with the importance of justice administration as a component. Important themes throughout the book include the role of the media, special interests, elite policy makers, and discretion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contending that effective law enforcement depends upon cooperation between the police and the public, this book takes a critical look at the problems of police-community relations, and the programs being implemented to resolve them. In the process, it challenges many of the traditional approaches to law enforcement, and offers a new definition of the role of the police. The authors, both former police officers, begin by defining the police and the community. They examine the perceptions the police and community have of each other. Using personal experiences and anecdotes, they develop a portrait of the police recruit and his socialization into the world of law enforcement. A study of the diverse facets of the community is included. This section provides important insight into the basic problems between the police and the community. In part two, the authors describe and evaluate the different programs being used to improve police-community relations, such as community service officers, youth patrols, community councils, and storefronts. It is in this section that the important concepts of conflict management and crisis intervention as basic responsibilities for police officers are presented, and alternative strategies for dealing with crisis situations are discussed. Other important discussions cover stress situations that contribute to police-community alienation, a more comprehensive approach to the patrol function of law enforcement, and the problems of recruiting minorities for police work. The document concludes with an in-depth discussion of the concept of team policing and its practical application. The Holyoke model, a plan found to be most effective both from the standpoint of police efficiency and client approbation, is examined carefully.

One of the main objectives of the book is to examine if, how and to what extent restorative justice is applicable in various different cultural, social and historical contexts, and what common themes can be identified within the different regions under analysis. The book will also provide a critical analysis of the UN Basic Principles on the use of restorative justice programmes in criminal matters as applied to the context of large scale violence.

Focusing on why offenders commit crimes, authors Pamela J. Schram, Joseph A. Schwartz, and Stephen G. Tibbetts apply established theories to real-life examples to explain criminal behavior. Coverage of violent and property crimes is included throughout theory chapters so that students can clearly understand the application of theory to criminal behavior. Updates to the Fourth Edition include recent major social events, such as the George Floyd protests; changes in crime trends and criminal behavior as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; updated crime statistics, case studies, as well as contemporary topics, such as mass shooting events and the legalization of marijuana use.
