Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolation I wish you would call on Mrs. Luce and try to comfort her in her bereavement, said a friend Of mine who was accustomed to sug gest to me a way Of being useful to others when she saw an Opportunity Of doing it. What calamity has befallen your friend Mrs. Luce that she needs help from a compara tive stranger? She has her minister and many intelligent friends, who ought to be able to give her all the consolation that one person can give another. I know that. They have tried, but they have done nothing to lift her burden Of sorrow or dispel one shadow from her mind; she continues to be perfectly hopeless and the picture Of despair. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolation in Trials and Suffering The author of the original work has not given his name to the world, but it bears evidence of being the production of some earnest, sincere, and experienced fellow-disciple, who has left this little legacy for those who were to come after him, and who are, perhaps, like their Master, to be taught and perfected through suffer ing. It Will be pleasant to those of liberal views in religion, to find how little doctrlne has to do with the attainment of Faith, hope, and Charity, or Love. The author of the present volume has felt it to be a duty to arrange and republish this little work, as there may be others to whom it may come as a messenger of h0pe and comfort in affliction, mental or corporeal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of Consolation, or an Account of Many Old Writings and Writers on That Subject The work, prefaced by this Essay, has been undertaken, because of the essayist's belief that consolation does not form a separate topic in modern systems of theology - that, looking to the scriptural statements on the subject, he finds that some of those statements have not their proper place, and that others have no place, in those theological systems. There is, however, an Old literature on this branch Of truth to which it is his object to introduce the inquiring reader. Those authors who have put the neglected portion Of the subject in its right place, Shall be introduced first. Then we can cull, from many other authors, instructive sentences as to that other part Of the subject, to which our theologians have given a large amount Of attention. Book excerpt: 'Why else does slippery Fortune change So much, and punishment more fit For crime oppress the innocent?' Written in prison before his brutal execution in AD 524, Boethius's The Consolation of Philosophy is a conversation between the ailing prisoner and his 'nurse' Philosophy, whose instruction restores him to health and brings him to enlightenment. Boethius was an eminent public figure who had risen to great political heights in the court of King Theodoric when he was implicated in conspiracy and condemned to death. Although a Christian, it was to the pagan Greek philosophers that he turned for inspiration following his abrupt fall from grace. With great clarity of thought and philosophical brilliance, Boethius adopted the classical model of the dialogue to debate the vagaries of Fortune, and to explore the nature of happiness, good and evil, fate and free will. This edition includes an introduction discussing Boethius's life and writings, a bibliography, glossary and notes.

Trouble, as one of the means conducive to this end, is an essential part of the system under which we live. It is therefore a manifestation of divine beneficence, a proof of the interest that the Father takes in us, not a ground of complaint or distrust. The question which we need to solve is this, - how can the outward trouble be so received that it shall not disturb the feelings which we carry within us - how shall the mirror of the breast be saved from reflecting the images of disaster? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely and profound philosophical meditations on how great figures in history, literature, music, and art searched for solace while facing tragedies and crises, from the internationally renowned historian of ideas and Booker Prize finalist Michael Ignatieff When we lose someone we love, when we suffer loss or defeat, when catastrophe strikes—war, famine, pandemic—we go in search of consolation. Once the province of priests and philosophers, the language of consolation has largely vanished from our modern vocabulary, and the places where it was offered, houses of religion, are often empty. Rejecting the solace of ancient religious texts, humanity since the sixteenth century has increasingly placed its faith in science, ideology, and the therapeutic. How do we console each other and ourselves in an age of unbelief? In a series of lapidary meditations on writers, artists, musicians, and their works—from the books of Job and Psalms to Albert Camus, Anna Akhmatova, and Primo Levi—esteemed writer and historian Michael Ignatieff shows how men and women in extremity have looked to each other across time to recover hope and resilience. Recreating the moments when great figures found the courage to confront their fate and the determination to continue unafraid, On Consolation takes those stories into the present, movingly contending that we can revive these traditions of consolation to meet the anguish and uncertainties of our precarious twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using as her starting point the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, Melissa F. Zeiger examines modern transformations of poetic elegy, particularly as they reflect historical changes in the politics of gender and sexuality. Although her focus is primarily on nineteenth- and twentieth-century poetry, the scope of her investigation is grand: from John Milton's "Lycidas" to very recently written AIDS and breast cancer elegies. Milton epitomized the traditional use of the Orpheus myth as an illustration of the female threat to masculine poetic prowess, focused on the beleaguered Orpheus. Zeiger documents the gradual inclusion of Eurydice, from the elegies of Algernon Charles Swinburne through the work of Thomas Hardy and John Berryman, re-examining the role of Eurydice, and the feminine more generally, in poetic production. Zeiger then considers women poets who challenge the assumptions of elegies written by men, sometimes identifying themselves with Eurydice. Among these poets are H.D., Edna St. Vincent Millay, Anne Sexton, and Elizabeth Bishop. Zeiger concludes with a discussion of elegies for victims of current plagues, explaining how poets mourning those lost to AIDS and breast cancer rewrite elegy in ways less repressive, sacrificial, or punitive than those of the Orphean tradition. Among the poets discussed are Essex Hemphill, Thom Gunn, Mark Doty, Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, and Marilyn Hacker.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolation: A Little Book of Comfort for Aching Hearts The world stands in perpetual need of comfort. Each tick of the clock is the quiet death-knell of some human life, and few among them all, thank God, depart without being mourned by some one. An unmourned death is the saddest of all deaths those are most blessed who are most lamented. The potter's fields of earth are small in their proportion to the area of her ceme teries, and for almost every grave in the potter's field there is an aching heart somewhere grieving, wondering, fearing, hoping, till hope dies out - if it ever does and gives way to a settled sorrow. The very exceptions serve to make conspicuous the rule. Few human lives are valueless to some other human lives, somewhere. And so there is grief, and so there is need of comfort. It is good that comfort is required. Tears are earth's most eloquent tribute to human worth. It were not well that comfort should come too cheaply. Grief Springs from love, and love is not cheap. Grief bears witness to character, and character is the most precious thing on earth or in heaven. The world needs comfort because the world knows love and recognises worth, and knows that life has something/worth cherishing, worth mourning. Be not too ready to cry out in despair that no good world could need so much of comfort. It would be a sad world if it needed comfort less. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sources of Consolation in Human Life Experiences of thwarted hope, fruitless effort, bereavement, betrayal, sickness, fear, perplexity, collapsing wretchedness, distraction, and despair, are so numerous and so constant as to compose one of the elemental aspects of the history of our race. The correspondent call for ministra tions of solace, courage, and cheer is so emphatic that unnumbered attempts have naturally been made to answer it. A host of books have been published with this object in view. But the majority of them have been mere compilations, sentimental and superficial, without intellectual penetration, and without moral and religious vitality or charm. This species of literature, as a rule, has much of professional phraseology, mechanical commonplace, and traditional cant, with little of that interpretative knowledge and living sympathy which alone are laden with a divinely human helpfulness.
