Book excerpt: Considered by turns part-gothic novel, part-psychological mystery, part-metafiction, part-satire, part-case study of totalitarian thought, it can also be thought of as an early example of modern crime fiction in which the story is told, for the most part, from the point of view of its criminal anti-hero. The action of the novel is located in a historically definable Scotland with accurately observed settings, and simultaneously implies a pseudo-Christian world of angels, devils, and demonic possession. The narrative is set against the antinomian societal structure flourishing in the borders of Scotland in Hogg's day.

Book excerpt: The “sinner” in this engrossing and strange novel is Robert Wringham, the son of a Scottish laird and a much more religious mother, who quickly separates from her free-living husband under the encouragement of an influential minister. When it’s time to be baptized, Robert takes the preacher’s last name, and a bit later the reverend decides that Robert is also one of God’s chosen. Robert believes that as a member of the elect he can never be damned, no matter what he does. One day Robert becomes fast friends with a man with mysterious powers and a strange name. This Gil-Martin takes on the appearance of different people, and can even learn their “most secret thoughts.” He’s also good at arguing Scripture—and capitalizing on Robert’s pride, and other faults. Soon they’re scheming together to get the better of their enemies—and their plans include murder. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner was a failure when it was first published anonymously in 1824, though it was ahead of its time in its blend of mystery, psychological horror, tall tales, comedy, metafiction, and social criticism. It was only in the twentieth century that it became more broadly known, gaining admirers that included the writers André Gide, Muriel Spark, Philip Pullman, and Ian Rankin. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: In James Hogg's 'The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner', the reader is taken on a haunting journey into the dark realms of human psychology and religious fanaticism. Written in a fragmented, multi-narrative style, the novel blurs the lines between reality and illusion, truth and fiction, making it a seminal work in the Gothic literary tradition. Hogg explores themes of duality, morality, and the nature of sin, challenging the reader to question the very foundations of good and evil. The book's intricate plot and unreliable narrators keep the reader on edge, creating a sense of unease that lingers long after the final page is turned. James Hogg, a Scottish author and poet, drew inspiration from his own religious background and the folklore of his native land to craft this complex and thought-provoking novel. His deep understanding of human nature and the complexities of the human psyche shine through in the intricate characterization and psychological depth of the book. I highly recommend 'The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner' to readers who enjoy dark, atmospheric tales that delve into the depths of the human soul. Hogg's masterful storytelling and exploration of timeless themes make this Gothic classic a must-read for anyone interested in the darker side of human nature.

Book excerpt: "The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner" by James Hogg is a compelling and psychologically intense novel that delves into themes of identity, guilt, and redemption. The story is presented as the memoirs of a man named Robert Wringham, who describes his life as an 'elect' or 'justified sinner'—a person chosen by divine grace to be saved despite their sinful nature. Set in 18th-century Scotland, the novel follows Robert's tumultuous life as he is influenced by a mysterious and malevolent figure who encourages him to indulge in immoral and criminal acts. The figure, who may be the Devil himself, leads Robert down a path of self-destruction and chaos, testing his beliefs and challenging his understanding of morality and salvation. The novel is notable for its complex narrative structure and exploration of the duality of human nature. Hogg's use of unreliable narration and psychological depth creates a haunting and enigmatic story that challenges conventional notions of good and evil. "The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner" is celebrated for its innovative narrative style and its exploration of existential themes, making it a significant work in the gothic and psychological fiction traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comic and terrifying novel about a man haunted by the Devil in the form of his own evil double. James Hogg (1770–1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist, and farmer whose work was discovered by Sir Walter Scott and admired by writers as different as Wordsworth and Byron. His most famous book, Confessions of a Justified Sinner, published in 1824 and set in seventeenth-century Scotland, is a vivid exploration of fanaticism and the power of evil. The novel’s anti-hero, a young man named Robert Wringhim, falls under the influence of an enigmatic, shape-shifting companion, Gil-Martin, who convinces him that he is one of God’s chosen few and thus justified even in committing murder. Robert begins by focusing his murderous intentions on his more worldly and popular half-brother, the son of the Laird of Dalcastle, but before long he is besieged by doubts about his beliefs and even his own identity. Anticipating Dostoevsky’s great dramas of sin, self-accusation, and damnation by half a century, Hogg’s masterpiece employs a comparable combination of black comedy, bitter realism, and colorful narrative sweep. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, and European-style half-round spines. Everyman’s Library Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author's life and times. Introduction by Roger Lewis

My sorrows have all been for a slighted gospel, and my vengeance has been wreaked on its adversaries. Therefore, in the might of Heaven, I will sit down and write: I will let the wicked of this world know what I have done in the faith of the promises, and justification by grace, that they may read and tremble, and bless their gods of silver and gold that the minister of Heaven was removed from their sphere before their blood was mingled with their sacrifices.

As a bold and gifted child, his promise seemed boundless to the three adoring sisters over whom his rule was complete. But as an adult, the precocious flame of genius distorted and burned low. With neither the strength nor the resources to counter rejection, unable to sell his paintings or publish his books, Branwell became a spectre in the Bronte story, in pathetic contrast with the astonishing achievements of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. This is the biography of the shadowy figure of the "unknown" Bronte. "Miss du Maurier has brought to the art of the biography the narrative urgency which gives such animation to her storytelling."-New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: The interest of Anglo-Irish literature is not only that its canon includes a high proportion of literary giants - Yeats, Joyce, Beckett - but also that it exemplifies the problematics of literature in a context of social and cultural tension. Irish literary history has often been studied under precisely that aspect: as the literature of a country in a marginal, colonial yet intra-European position; a country where a variety of cultural traditions (Gaelic, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Presbyterian) have coexisted in an uneasy relationship; a country with intense social and economic divisions. These infrastructural tensions are not mere background or part of the context, but have been explicitly thematized in a substantial part of Ireland's literary output, so that an Irish author who does not address the matter of Ireland stands out as an anomaly, an exception to the general patterns. Therefore, the historical context of much Anglo-Irish scholarship is hardly surprising. Forging the Smithy: National Identity and Representation in Anglo-Irish Literary Historyaddresses three interrelated areas of interest: language, territory and politics; the role of historical consciousness in Irish authors and in their dissemination; and the representation of Irish affairs asa it gives rise to specific literary strategies.

Book excerpt: Starting with a re-examination of the role of the colonial/racial Other in mainstream Gothic (colonial) fiction, this book goes on to engage with the problem of narrating the 'subaltern' in the post-colonial context. It engages with the problems of representing 'difference' in lucid conceptual terms, with much attention to primary texts, and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of colonial discourses as well as postcolonialist attempts to 'write back.' While providing rich readings of Conrad, Kipling, Melville, Emily Brontë, Erna Brodber, Jean Rhys and others, it offers new perspectives on Otherness, difference and identity, re-examines the role of emotions in literature, and suggests productive ways of engaging with contemporary global and postcolonial issues.

Book excerpt: One of the earliest documented Scottish song collectors actually to go 'into the field' to gather his specimens, was the Highlander Joseph Macdonald. Macdonald emigrated in 1760 - contemporaneously with the start of James Macpherson's famous but much disputed Ossian project - and it fell to the Revd. Patrick Macdonald to finish and subsequently publish his younger brother's collection. Karen McAulay traces the complex history of Scottish song collecting, and the publication of major Highland and Lowland collections, over the ensuing 130 years. Looking at sources, authenticity, collecting methodology and format, McAulay places these collections in their cultural context and traces links with contemporary attitudes towards such wide-ranging topics as the embryonic tourism and travel industry; cultural nationalism; fakery and forgery; literary and musical creativity; and the move from antiquarianism and dilettantism towards an increasingly scholarly and didactic tone in the mid-to-late Victorian collections. Attention is given to some of the performance issues raised, either in correspondence or in the paratexts of published collections; and the narrative is interlaced with references to contemporary literary, social and even political history as it affected the collectors themselves. Most significantly, this study demonstrates a resurgence of cultural nationalism in the late nineteenth century.
