Book excerpt: "The Prisoners of Hartling" by John Davys Beresford (often shortened to J. D. Beresford) is a short yet perfect example of the author's unique writing style. Best known for his science-fiction works, Beresford has a talent for creating settings that transport his readers directly into his stories. "The Prisoners of Hartling" is no different. An intriguing tale of morality and human nature, the book is just as relevant now as it was at the time it was first published.

Arthur Woodroffe's voice was quite cheerful as he framed this indictment of the life of a general practitioner in a poor neighbourhood, but his companion frowned and shook his head impatiently. "You are still re-acting to the pernicious influences of that damnable war," he said. "You're hankering after the intoxication of saving wounded under fire; exciting stunts of that sort; Sbana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus. You've got to learn to be content with Jordan. Risk your life in more homely ways saving the sick in Peckham. Same thing, really; only you don't get orders for it. And of course ..." he hesitated, pushed up his gold-rimmed spectacles, and stared hard at his friend and paid assistant. "Any way, what is it you're hankering after, my good chap?" he concluded. Woodroffe looked critically round the little room, and then at Somers glowering down at him from the hearthrug. "More space," he said briefly; "and more ..." He seemed to jib at the word that was obviously in his mind. "More beauty," Somers suggested. "If you like," Woodroffe agreed carelessly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thrilling Adventures of the Prisoner of the Border Elegant, well - educated, witty and graceful, he really believed himself to he a very ordinary mortal, who owed all his considera tion to the extreme good-nature of his acquaintances, and to the great merits of his younger brother. His friends were all quite or nearly faultless in his estimation, but Tom was a perfect paragon of excellence. SO talented, so learned, so very, very deep, so ambi tious, too, that he was sure to become a very great man ere long, and to shed a rich lustre upon the family name. Ah! How he regretted that his parents, whose pet Tom had ever been, could not have been permitted to live to see that coming day which was to realize their predictions and his own expectations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fastidious Prisoner Both the adjectives and illustrations are chosen for their effect, rather than for their relation to fact. If the article were sure to be carefully read, there would be no occasion to reply to it, for it furnishes its own internal evidence of unreliability. For twenty-five years the writer has undoubtedly been giving private rehearsalsof prison experiences, enlarging upon them as his imagination broadened and intensified, until at last he has gone into print, more anxious to live up to his oral versions than to keep within the bounds of reason. Upon this theory only can one account for such a story. When the adjectives and the overstatements are eliminated, this recital of Cold Cheer is little more than a petulant complaint that as prisoners of war they were not feasted and feted as distinguished guests. All that we ask is that it be read with the distinct understanding that its author writes of war times; that he was a prisoner of war, and was fed and clothed by the government. He makes four general charges abusive treatment, cruelty, starvation, and freezing to death. He bases the charge of abusive treatment upon the fact that prisoners were sometimes struck because they would not cease talking when an officer was pass ing. It is a matter of official report that it was practically impossible for an officer to go through the camp without beinginsulted. It was more difficult to disci pline the prison in this regard than it was our own camp. The prisoners would stroll near the sentry and mutter epithets, for which, if spoken under other circum stances, they would have been imme diately chastised. I recall a Sunday when they were holding open-air services. The preacher, in a prolonged prayer, plied anathemas so thick and fast, amid jubilant Amens, that I asked for authority to see that he ceased praying to be heard of men. This was not granted, and he continued to shout his abuse of the soldiers, officers, Yankee land, and the President. I never knew a case in which a man was slapped in the face for it, but I knew a thousand men who were ready for such a fray. I presume some men yielded to the provocation when officers or visitors were insulted. Suffice it to say that the abuse was provoked. Day by day certain southern waters find themselves more and more forsaken. The South Atlantic, the high-road of the world at one time, is now a by-lane.
