Prior to her conviction, Sharon was a well-respected psychologist at the Grief Clinic for five years. Now behind bars, she wants to do something good during her incarceration, so she gets in touch with her old coworkers to see about starting a program for her fellow women in lockdown. To her amazement, all four of the social workers at the Grief Clinic agree to get involved. Soon, her pilot program is off and running with Brooksie, Lucinda, Rachael, and Anita at the helm. But its not long before things start going badly at Lancers. An inmate ends up missing, the only trace of her being a bit of blood in the laundry room. Missing quickly turns to murder, and the women are frightened of much more than their fellow convicts. Theres something nasty happening at Lancers, and Sharon is intent on finding out what. With the help of her friends at the Grief Clinic and the other inmates, evil intent and corrupt practices are revealed. Yet whos going to believe a bunch of criminals? Despite the odds, these women will work together to right the wrongs, and some will even find hope in the darkness, emerging victorious on the other side.

Book excerpt: Early on June 1, 1953, five African American men boarded a van to travel 200 miles from Nashville to Memphis for a daylong recording session at the legendary Sun Studios. The resulting "Just Walkin' in the Rain" became Sun Records' biggest pre-Elvis song-and the group's only hit. The men were the Prisonaires, a vocal quintet who honed their skills while inmates at the Tennessee State Penitentiary. This book looks at the story of these imprisoned men using music as a means of cultural and personal survival in context of the pre-Civil Rights South at a time when Nashville was beginning to gain national recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying in prisons can have severe consequences both for those directly involved and for the prison regime as a whole, yet the subject has been curiously neglected in the literature. In 1993, the Prison Service introduced their first anti-bullying strategy, and since then there has been a great deal of research on the subject. Bullying Among Prisoners summarises this research, and seeks to answer some important questions. Bullying Among Prisoners identifies problems in defining and measuring bullying, along with proposing guidelines on how research in this field should be conducted. The book covers: * what bullying is * how and why it occurs * the effects of bullying * practical strategies for preventing bullying. By outlining a series of interventions that can be employed to address bullying, this book will prove an invaluable resource for all those working directly with the perpetrators and victims, not only in prisons but also in a range of settings such as regional secure units and special hospitals.

This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of older prisoners is now very high and is likely to remain so - partly caused by the increase in convictions for historic sexual offences. The growth of the older prison population and the severity of the needs of that population, warrant a national strategy in order to provide for them effectively. Older and disabled prisoners should no longer be held in institutions which cannot meet their basic needs nor should they be released back into the community without adequate support. There are some excellent prison officers and charity workers who are providing essential social care but an ad hoc system means that too often older prisoners have to rely on the goodwill of officers and their fellow inmates to fulfill the most basic of care needs. The responsibility to adapt the prison environment so that it suits less able prisoners lies with a prison's senior management team and the National Offender Management Service (NOMS). NOMS should conduct a comprehensive analysis of prisons' physical compliance with disability discrimination and age equality laws. The Committee does not believe there is a need for the expansion of segregated older prisoner units or wings. However, NOMS should ensure all prisons have an older prisoner policy that provides age and ability specific regimes. Furthermore older prisoners who are released after a long period of incarceration must have a resettlement and care plan. At present older prisoners are frequently released to no fixed abode undermining all work that has been made towards resettlement

Book excerpt: This book brings together historians from Great Britain, the United States, Germany, France, Canada, Austria, and Latvia who have worked and published on fraternisation between Prisoners of War and local women during either the First or Second World War, providing the first comparative study of this multi-faceted phenomenon in different belligerent countries. By focusing on prisoners as wartime migrants and studying the nature and impact of their interactions with the local female population, this book expands the existing framework on prisoner of war studies. Its substantial scope and comparative approach make it an important point of reference in the growing research field of POW studies.

Book excerpt: The Committee undertook this inquiry to address concerns about the imprisonment of Welsh prisoners outside Wales. At present there are only four prisons in Wales, all in the South, and there is little provision for juveniles and no prisons for women. The overcrowding means that Welsh prisoners have a reduced chance of serving their sentence near home and reduces the chances of successful resettlement on release. The Committee believe there should be new prison places in North Wales, separate provision for young offenders and a new approach to women prisoners along the lines suggested by Baroness Corston. The report also address concerns about support services for mental illness amongst prisoners, the amount of Welsh language provision and education services.

Book excerpt: This book aims to present key aspects of the prison-based bullying research which has taken place over the last few years. It is a field in which there has been considerably increased interest. One of the main features of this book is the recognition that much previous bullying research has been descriptive in nature, with little underlying theory to assist its development as an area of academic interest. In addressing this need this book will serve as an indispensable resource for students, academics and professionals with interests in this field. Chapters in the book address the following areas: need for innovation in prison bullying research, statistics on bullying, combining methods to research prison bullying, bullying behaviour among women in prison, bullying and suicides in prisons, developmental antecedents of prison bullies and/or victims, applying evolutionary theory to prison bullying, applying social problem solving models to prison bullying.
