Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were the most famous men in America. They came from separate countries, followed different philosophies, and led dissimilar lives. But they were fast friends. No two people did more to shape America in the mid-1700s. Benjamin Franklin was the American prototype: hard-working, inventive, practical, funny, with humble manners and lofty dreams. George Whitefield was the most popular preacher in an era of great piety, whose outdoor preaching across the colonies was heard by thousands, all of whom were told, “You must be born again.” People became excited about God. They began reading the Bible and supporting charities. When Whitefield died in 1770, on a preaching tour in New Hampshire, he had built a spiritual foundation for a new nation—just as his surviving friend, Ben Franklin, had built its social foundation. Together these two men helped establish a new nation founded on liberty. This is the story of their amazing friendship.

Book excerpt: The novel that inspired a young Ronald Reagan—and left him with “an abiding belief in the triumph of good over evil.” “I found a role model in that traveling printer whom Harold Bell Wright had brought to life. He set me on a course I’ve tried to follow even unto this day. I shall always be grateful.” —Ronald Reagan, in a letter to Harold B. Wright’s daughter-in-law in 1984 After reading this book at age eleven, Ronald Reagan experienced its lasting impact on his life, and it shaped his own moral sense. He identified with the central character, Dick Falkner, whose childhood was one of poverty and abuse from an alcoholic father. Recognizing his life for what it was, he ran away from his home, but he could not run away from all of his problems. Sixteen years later, he found himself hungry of body and empty of spirit in a small Midwestern town. Eventually, he is taken in by George Udell, a local printer and a kind-hearted man. George Udell gives the young man a job, and something more important: spiritual support. Through hard work and Christian morals, the man who becomes known as “that printer of Udell’s” rises above his past to a new life with God, doing what he can to change the lives of the townspeople. “[A] thoroughly good novel.” —The Boston Globe “This is a book that will appeal to both men and women. It should have a place in church libraries.” —Church and Synagogue Library Association “Many of Reagan’s accomplishments, as well as his outlook on life, can be traced back to that dog-eared copy of That Printer of Udell’s.” —John Fund, The Wall Street Journal columnist, from his foreword

Book excerpt: In these eighty-one years I have lived here on earth and the fi fty two years I have been blessed to preach the gospel from coast to coast preaching here and there, from east to west from north to south, traveling by auto and airplane and I ask myself after all these years how did I make it and every time it come back to me "By the Grace of God", I have never considered myself as one that is smart and the Lord have allowed me to write this my second book and get them published, produce two sermons on DVD and record a CD's with fourteen songs on it after passing out earlier that same day while preaching a sermon so I think this is a great accomplishment for a common everyday preacher from Selma AL. with a little education. God have been mighty good to me, my family and the people I have preached to over the years. All of my family of six is dead but my sister and myself and she is eighty years old herself and lives alone. It seem that the people of today don't know that God exist and controls everything and that we are on a death wish and a hell scrap, the Devil is on a least trying to take over the world and the church, all he have to do is get us to shut our mouths and it's a done deal. So brother preacher" it's time", time for us to wake up, time to get up, time to speak up, time to stand up and start talking and living for Jesus. This has been my calling and I hope it is yours whether you are in a preaching ministry or not, now is the time for all of God's people to tell the story of his suffering under Pilate and on the cross, his death, his resurrection, his ascension to the Father in Heaven, and his coming again for those who love him.

Book excerpt: Pilgrim and Preacher seeks to understand the numerous pilgrimage writings of the Dominican Felix Fabri (1437/8-1502), not only as rich descriptions of the Holy Land, Egypt, and Palestine, but also as sources for the religious attitudes and social assumptions that went into their creation. Fabri, an Observant reformer and talented preacher, as well as a two-time Holy Land pilgrim, adapted his pilgrimage experiences for four different audiences. He produced the rhymed Swabian-German Pilgerbüchlein for those who sponsored his first voyage; the encyclopaedic Latin Evagatorium for his Dominican brethren; the vernacular Pilgerbuch for the noble patrons of his second voyage and their households; and finally, the vernacular Sionpilger-an 'imagined' or 'virtual' pilgrimage - for the nuns in his care, who were unable to make the real journey themselves. This study asks fundamental questions about the readership for such works, and then builds upon an analysis of Fabri's audiences to reassess the nature of piety, and the place both pilgrimage literature and Observant reform had in it, in late-medieval Germany. Pilgrim and Preacher is a study of reception, yet one that departs from traditional approaches to pilgrimage literature, which see pilgrimage writing merely as a body of texts to be classified according to genre or mined for colourful details about the Jerusalem journey. This work combines the insights of both literary theory and historical studies with an original, empirical contribution based on an analysis of the manuscripts and printed history of Fabri's writings, setting them in their historical and cultural contexts. Such an analysis allows us to understand better the working of the religious imagination amongst urban elites and women religious in the late middle ages. By charting the influences of the Observance Movement within the Dominican, Fabri's writings were intended for both his young novices (to make them more effective preachers) and for the religious women who could only go to Jerusalem via the imagination, Pilgrim and Preacher also makes an important contribution to the history of the Dominican Observance movement and the wider currents that flowed between it and the civic and religious feelings of the age.

Book excerpt: An “excellent true-crime study” of a female serial killer given the death penalty for poisoning at least three men between 1973 and 1989 (Publishers Weekly). Widowed Blanche Taylor Moore was about to lose her second spouse to symptoms that mysteriously mirrored those that killed her first husband—as well as her previous boyfriend. When an investigation reveals arsenic poisoning, the hideous truth about the wife and mother comes to light. Did the abuse Blanche suffered as a child at the hands of her alcoholic father turn her into a murderer she became? In this riveting true crime account, critically acclaimed journalist Jim Schutze explores the harrowing motivation and chilling details of the lives, loves, and victims of North Carolina’s oldest living inmate on death row. “Involving . . . chronicle of the murderous career of a Bible Belt Borgia.” —Kirkus Reviews
