Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the decade and a half that has elapsed since the intro duction of principal functions (Sario [8 J), they have become impor tant tools in an increasing number of branches of modern mathe matics. The purpose of the present research monograph is to systematically develop the theory of these functions and their ap plications on Riemann surfaces and Riemannian spaces. Apart from brief background information (see below), nothing contained in this monograph has previously appeared in any other book. The basic idea of principal functions is simple: Given a Riemann surface or a Riemannian space R, a neighborhood A of its ideal boundary, and a harmonic function s on A, the principal function problem consists in constructing a harmonic function p on all of R which imitates the behavior of s in A. Here A need not be connected, but may include neighborhoods of isolated points deleted from R. Thus we are dealing with the general problem of constructing harmonic functions with given singularities and a prescribed behavior near the ideal boundary. The function p is called the principal function corresponding to the given A, s, and the mode of imitation of s by p. The significance of principal functions is in their versatility.

Spillane and Rebecca Lowenhaupt look at the major challenges of the principal position, examining how new principals adapt to the role, set an instructional agenda, and build cooperation and collaboration. They focus in particular on the dilemmas that mark the principalship—the inevitable, complicated conflicts that arise from a clash of worthwhile values and resist simple solutions, such as - Addressing the demands of various internal and external stakeholders - Accomplishing seemingly limitless tasks in limited time - Sharing leadership duties while maintaining ultimate responsibility for the school and everyone in it - Creating a safe space for teaching and learning while building bridges to the outside world - Balancing work life and home life Based on original research conducted with new principals in an urban environment, and rich with authentic voices discussing real conflicts and proven strategies, this book presents pragmatic ways to manage the most difficult parts of the job. Use it to spark both reflection and action and chart a course for effective, rewarding school leadership.

This book was released on 1988-01-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this significant new work, Larry Cuban provides a unique and insightful perspective on the bridging of the long-standing and well-known gap between teachers and administrators. Drawing on the literature of the field as well as personal experience, Cuban recognizes the enduring structural relationship within school organizations inherited by teachers, principals, and superintendents, and calls for a renewal of their sense of common purpose regarding the role of schooling in a democratic society. Cuban analyzes the dominant images (moral and technical), roles (instructional, managerial, and political), and contexts (classroom, school, and district) within which teachers, principals, and superintendents have worked over the last century. He concludes that when these powerful images and roles are wedded to the structural conditions in which schooling occurs, "managerial behavior" results, thus narrowing the potential for more thoughtful, effective, and appropriate leadership. Cuban then turns to consider this situation with respect to the contemporary movement for school reform, identifying significant concerns both for policymakers and practitioners. This honest, thought-provoking book by a leading scholar, writer, and practitioner in the field represents an invaluable resource—an insightful introduction for those just entering the field and a fresh, new perspective for those long-familiar with its complexities. Cuban's ethnographic approach to the development of his own career and viewpoint, as well as his highly readable style, make this a work of lasting value.

Book excerpt: This book identifies the cultural and moral foundations of country-specific educational governance and school leadership and presents the principles of justice and the diversity of common goods that guide leadership practices in schools. It contributes to an existing research field that studies diversity and ethical leadership in schools. The social dimension of school leadership is not limited to issues related to equality and equity, or social inclusion. The capacity of leaders to promote civic-mindedness and social cooperation, consensus and acceptance of others, the right balance between freedom and duties, and reciprocity of obligations, are essential to maintain democratic rights and facilitate the life together while respecting ethnic and cultural differences. Therefore, the book gathers contributions from a range of international authors capable of reporting these moral and cultural features, while broadening the research perspectives on school leadership.
