Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 14: May, 1920 Permit me to extend to you this morning most sincere and hearty congratulations. I stand here unofficially as the spokesman for the Seminary, the church, and especially for the ministry whose service you now join in the interests of the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. The interest in an occasion like this may not be adequately expressed by any exer cises in which we engage. The urgent call in these days for the devotion of men to interests other than material is so wide-spread and em phatic that the graduation exercises of our theological seminaries take on a new and ln creased interest. Thirty - eight years ago at the Western Theological Seminary I was in your position and now after a generation of service I come to you with some Observations growing out of this experience in the hope that you may put a new appraisal upon the impor tance of the service of the minister to his gen cration. Accordingly, I have selected for the topic Of this address, The Ministry for the Modern Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 6: May 1912 But when I say that the theological position of Princeton Seminary has remained un changed I am very free to admit that the issues of to-day are different from those of a former generation. The Calvinistic theology is a view of the world which takes account of the whole field of human conduct. All in fact that per tains to being, duty and destiny falls within its purview. Believing in the existence of a personal God we feel bound to interpret all events in the terms and under the great cate gory oi the Divine purpose. If we believe in the Incarnation we must believe that it was included in that purpose. If we believe that salvation is through faith, it is very hard to escape the conviction that both the salvation and the faith which is instrumental to it are to be included in that purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 25: November, 1931 We cannot, in fact, do otherwise than so take our stand for our Christianity. And if we shall seem all that is foolish in doing so, our only answer must be in the words of the na tive assistant of Dr. Schweitzer.108 Once when Dr. Schweitzer, after an operation out yon in the deeps of Africa was discouraged over the impossibility of getting ideas of cleanliness and anti-sepsis into the mind of the Negroes, he said in his discouragement: What a fool I am to try it. But his assistant answered, A fool perhaps on earth, but not in Heaven. We are not so naive as to assert that all God's children are on our side; we only give notice that so far as in us lies, we shall strive to be on what we consider God's side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 32: Commencement Number; June, 1938 I. An emotional phase. When the terri ble strains of the war ended, multitudes sought relief by going direct to nature without God or moral control. A vivid sense of living was sought for in emo tional and sensational enjoyments. This led to a break with moral tradition, to an unrestricted exploration of forbidden paths, a savoring of prohibited pleasures, until today the world is cursed with a sick fatigue, a terrible satiety and boredom with life on a material plane. The back slider in heart is filled with his own ways. There is no pleasure in sin any more, since there are no new sins left. This sense of satiety turns sour and cynical, the years become stale, and many, overcome by its terrible futility, have little energy to seek remedies, and less desire to think about ways of moral recovery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 31: November, 1937 The intellectual tasks of the Christian Church vary according to the problems which Christianity has to face at a given time. Certain major problems are always with us, but other problems grow out of particular circumstances. I venture to say that the intellectual task of the Christian Church in our time moves within two f oei. One is the fact - the terrifying fact - oi world disintegration. The second focus is the fact, the inspiring fact, of world unitv in Christ. In the center of chaos in the secular order stands the Beloved Com munity, the Church of the Living God, the one great hope under God for mankind at such a time as this. So let us consider the so-called thought bearings of these two facts, because after all a major task of thought is to clarify, to dehne, to state issues, to suggest solutions.
