Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1989, Vol. 10 There are two difficulties that arise concerning the place and function of humanity in creation, one temporal and the other spatial. The temporal difficulty arises from the vast difference between the. Age of the earth and that of humanity. It has been established by scientific means that the earth is more than million years old, while the study of fossil remains indicates that Homo sapiens made his appearance some years ago. It would seem to follow that for millions of years the earth was left without the agent whom God appointed to serve in the fulfillment of. His purpose on the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 53: October, 1959 The Church is the frontier of the Kingdom, the point at which God's rule invades the world. It is the community in which God's new order is already at work. Because it must protest against the false nature of life in the world and live in a society of people who do not obey God's rule, like Jesus, the Church is a pilgrim on the earth. It lives a broken life. It is the world's best friend and finest hope; yet the world often hates and despises it. Being a member of the Church is not easy, because it means being a member of a community of people who are constantly protesting against a sinful world, constantly maladjusted to a world that is not real, and constantly agonizing for the world of God's intention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 16: November, 1922 I deem it a great privilege, as your friend of many years, to be permitted to address a few Words to you in the form of a charge, remind-ing you of some of your responsibilities and of the expectations of the Board of Dirce tors, the Board of Trustees, your associates of the faculty, your students, and of the Church at large. I am not at all competent to advise you con cerning much of the work which falls to your lot in this highly technical and difficult branch of Theological instruction. Strange to say, this is the second time that I have been appointed to charge a Professor in the Old Testament Department - the accomplished Old Testament Scholar wit-h whom you have been most closely associated, and now yourself. I can only ac count for this double choice on the ground of close friendship. While I make no pretension whatever to knowledge entitling me to speak to you as a mentor, I do have certain convictions in this matter which I desire to voice, and which I beg you to consider. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 15: June 1921 You probably would like to know what we expect to 'do with this. That reminds me of a story I heard once of a Georgia cracker who came in from the country. He and his wife had never seen a railroad train, and when it rushed by them the large pup which they had with them started after it. They looked at each other in astonishment and Liza said, Will he catch it, Jeremy And he said, It ain't what's bothering me. I would like to know what he will do with the blamed thing when he does catch it! I suppose you want to know what we are going to do with this money. It would take a good while to tell you, but I think that first and foremost what you men want is that we keep these funda mentals on the basis on which alone we can build secure and strong, and that whatever is done shall be on that solid foundation, taking into account some of the suggestions that have been made and which I should very much like to discuss if there were time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 21: May, 1927 Oh yes, I know that the message of the Gospel is a unique, because supernatural one. But what is still needed is force enough to burn it into the hard hearts of men. It is wonderful how a man of even common intellectual parts may do that if the great passion is in him. They used to tell me in Oklahoma that a cyclone would often drive a wooden splinter through a stone wall. Anaemic tapping will not drive a steel stiletto through a sheet of paper. Give me only fire enough, said Bernard Palissy, and I will burn these colors into this china. They laughed at him but he did it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 20: November, 1926 And what is the moral of all this? There are two or three obvious morals. The first of these is that we must accustom ourselves to hold to reality and truth, and when I use the word truth, I humbly use it in the sense that our Saviour used it. Before Pilate he was the King of truth, for this cause was I born, for this I came into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Pilate mockingly replied, What is truth and who can find truth? Our Lord knew and our Lord taught that truth is the reality of the invisible and unseen world in which he lived, which he opened to men by Pentecost and which has been the treasure of the church ever since.
