Book excerpt: Burns, Falls and Emergency Calls; has been written for parents and anyone working with or caring for children; to help you anticipate the next developmental milestones for children and to take the necessary measures to prevent life-threatening injuries and help you plan, prepare and avoid mishap. It will also equip you with critical first aid skills and advice to give you confidence to help should an accident occur. Immediate and appropriate first aid saves lives, reduces pain and suffering and can make a dramatic difference to the speed and extent of a child's recovery. Experienced nurse, trainer and first aid expert Emma Hammett draws upon her professional and personal experience to provide an engaging and authoritative guide to preventing and treating childhood accidents. Packed full of real life experiences, anecdotes and sound advice, this book is designed to give you the skills and confidence to let your children develop and flourish, experiencing inevitable minor bumps and bruises, while keeping them safe from more serious mishaps. With clear, simple directions, tested advice, engaging photographs and illustrations, this a unique, must-have for anyone looking after children of any age. The health and happiness of children in our care is of vital importance to us and we always do our best to keep them safe. However, despite these efforts, every year around 2 million children in the UK attend A&E due to an accident. Over 100,000 of these require admission to hospital - that is nearly 2,000 children a week! 150,000 people die every year in situations where first aid could have saved them. Accidents are second only to cancer as the leading cause of death for children and young people in the UK. You never know when something might happen! Children need to take measured risks, and bumps and bruises will inevitably result. However, it is important to prevent serious childhood injuries that can cause long-term damage and have life-changing consequences. The part of the brain that evaluates risk and consequence is not fully developed until people are in their early twenties. Therefore, it is vital for parents and those working with children, to be aware of potential dangers and equip themselves and the children with the knowledge and skills to keep themselves and others safe. Burns, Falls and Emergency Calls gives safety tips and advice for people caring for children from birth through to adulthood. Endorsed by the Child Accident Prevention Trust, Dr Amanda Gummer from the Good Toy Guide, esteemed Parenting and Childcare Experts; Burns, falls and emergency calls is heralded as the ultimate guide to the prevention and treatment of childhood accidents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child injuries are largely absent from child survival initiatives presently on the global agenda. Through this report, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund and many partners have set out to elevate child injury to a priority for the global public health and development communities. It should be seen as a complement to the UN Secretary-General's study on violence against children released in late 2006 (that report addressed violence-related or intentional injuries). Both reports suggest that child injury and violence prevention programs need to be integrated into child survival and other broad strategies focused on improving the lives of children. Evidence demonstrates the dramatic successes in child injury prevention in countries which have made a concerted effort. These results make a case for increasing investments in human resources and institutional capacities. Implementing proven interventions could save more than a thousand children's lives a day.--p. vii.

Book excerpt: Intended to build on emergency response training that Head Start staff receive, this guide assists staff and parents in understanding the causes of childhood injuries, and planning steps to more effectively prevent and manage children's injuries in the Head Start program, at home, and in the community. Following an introductory section, the guide presents three training modules. Each module details expected outcomes, key concepts, background information, learning activities, and next steps. Handouts are included for each module. Module One, "Understanding Childhood Injuries," helps participants understand the common causes of childhood injuries and their relationship to child development. Module Two, "Preventing Childhood Injuries," helps participants create, maintain, and supervise a safe environment in the Head Start program and at home, and also establish and teach safe practices to staff, children, and families. Module Three, "Preparing for and Managing Emergencies," helps participants prepare policies, procedures, and provisions for emergencies and to review injury patterns to improve injury-prevention efforts. The final sections of the guide contain continuing professional development information and resources for further study. Two appendices address safety for young children and provide a health and safety checklist. (SD)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injuries are a leading cause of death and disability in children. This report presents evidence on how they can be prevented and calls for greater commitment and action from policy-makers and practitioners to decrease the burden. Every year, unintentional injuries kill nearly 42,000 children and young people under the age of 20 in the WHO European Region. Injuries are the leading cause of death among those aged 5-19 years, and 5 out of 6 of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Irrespective of country income, the burden falls disproportionately on children from the most disadvantaged groups. The leading types of unintentional injuries are road traffic injuries, drowning, poisoning, burns and falls. All injury types have similar main causes and socioeconomic and environmental determinants. Children are particularly vulnerable to injuries and need special consideration to safeguard their rights to health and safe environments, free from injury. This report, companion to the World Report on Child Injury Prevention, presents the evidence on both the great potential for injury prevention and the effectiveness and value for money of measures already in use in European countries with low injury mortality. It shows why health systems and particularly programs for child health throughout the WHO European Region should give priority to preventing and controlling child injury.
