Book excerpt: The Victorian Government has commissioned this research study to investigate the extent of acquired brain injury among perpetrators and its prevalence among victims, to help inform prevention and assistance initiatives. The study also considers driving factors, trends, outcomes, identification and diagnosis, specialist supports, and how services may be best placed to engage and support these individuals and their families. The study involved a systematic review of literature, analysis of hospital data and available longitudinal study data, interviews with practitioners, and exploratory work on interventions aimed at reducing the impact of brain injury and family violence. This report presents the findings of the study and recommendations to the Victorian Government about community education, family violence risk assessment screening, and the development of an integrated brain injury and family violence service. Among its key findings is that, of victims of family violence attending Victorian hospitals over a ten-year period, 40% had sustained a brain injury - including child victims. This study is part of the Victorian Government's response to the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence.
