Book excerpt: The freedom of expression and the freedom of information are the indispensable components of free media. Without these two basic rights, an informed, active, and participatory citizenry is impossible. Members of the media require special protections to enable them to operate freely in order to advocate for human rights, public discourse, and the plurality of ideas. The Handbook of Research on Combating Threats to Media Freedom and Journalist Safety is an essential reference source that evaluates how diverse threats impact on journalists’ wellbeing, their right to freedom of expression, and overall media freedoms in various contexts and assesses inadequacies in national security policies, planning, and coordination relating to the safety of journalists in different countries. Featuring research on topics such as freedom of the press, professional journalism, and media security, this book is ideally designed for journalists, news writers, editors, columnists, press, broadcasters, newscasters, government officials, lawmakers, diplomats, international relations officers, law enforcement, industry professionals, academicians, researchers, and students.

This book was released on 2023-02-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Communications - Print Media, Press, grade: 3.02, University of Dhaka, language: English, abstract: The paper examines how the government’s different activities obstruct the freedom of media, especially the press media in Bangladesh. To fulfill the requirements of the paper both the secondary literature on the mass media and primary data are accumulated by interviews with government officials, journalists, lawyers, teachers, and students, and by reviewing a large stake of newspapers, books, and journals. We are living in an information age and information is the oxygen of the modern era, as stated by Ronald Reagan in his speech to the English-Speaking Union in 1989. Keeping pace with global change, Bangladesh is also in the process of turning into an information society. The mass media is still in the claw of the government. A free and vibrant mass media is one of the prime components of democracy, and good governance. Almost all developed countries allow and ensure an independent media, as it is the 4th pillar of a country. In a democratic society, the media are supposed to play certain functions. These functions include the coverage of significant events/opinions/views taking place or taking shape in society. The present era of globalization requires a free media as the prime component of development. But, some undemocratic and undeveloped countries always try to put a bar to free media. In Bangladesh, an immature democratic and developing country, requires strong and unfettered media to enhance its development and for ensuring accountability from government high-ups. Like the unstable government and administration from the birth of Bangladesh in 1971, the mass media also faced various tough situations. However, after the inception of democratic form of government in 1990, the country saw a tremendous growth in the number and range of both media outlets. Especially, the press media has established a strong position in the society. After 1990, a rapid growth was happened for the press media.

It contains contributions from journalists, television and newspaper editors, economists and academics, as well as the winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics Joseph Stiglitz, and for Literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. A number of case studies examine the work of the media and the challenges they face in various countries including Thailand, Bangladesh, Egypt, Zimbabwe and the former Soviet Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are publishing this book on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Independence of Bangladesh. The book is a collaboration of only academics from different countries. From different parts of the world, they have taken a profound interest in Bangladesh's media landscape from pre-liberation to post-liberation war. This book demonstrates the gradual development of this thriving nation that has rewritten its fate. While researching this book, we have realized there is a lack of information on the steady growth of the media landscape in Bangladesh. Resources on journalism are focused generally on the mass media: print, television and radio. There is a knowledge gap in digital trends. Hence the book explores the development of Bangladesh's mass media in the 70s,80s and 90s, as well as the contemporary mass media in the digital era. The book consists of three parts. Every part has different chapters emphasizing the various phases of mass communication.

Book excerpt: With contributions from a diverse group of media and communications scholars from around the globe, Bangladesh's Changing Mediascape presents a pioneering study of the trends, patterns, and prospects shaping the contemporary Bangladeshi media. Among the many topics discussed here are the difference among specific media formats, including television, newspapers, radio, film, and photography; policy issues; and the challenge that new media poses to governance in a developing nation faced with innumerable economic, social, and political problems. Eschewing the currently dominant development communication model, the editors argue that market forces rather than planned state interventions will contribute to a more equitable communication environment.

Book excerpt: The basic functions of mass media are to inform, educate, entertain and persuade the audience about different issues. Mass media also play watchdog role to let people know about the society. Recently, Bangladesh has become one of the major environmentally threatened countries in the world. The journalists are the lifeblood of media industry and they can play pivotal and leading role for building awareness in this regard. Since the journalists have been covering reports on environmental issues, no study has yet been conducted on the perception, understanding, attitudes and practices as well as the awareness of the journalists on these issues. In this regard, this book is a pioneer one, which will explore the understanding, practices and barriers of environmental reporting in Bangladesh. Moreover, the findings of the study will help the media policymakers to think about training needs for journalists. It will also help them to form a time-bound and applicable policy for environmental journalism.
