Book excerpt: In "The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England," Pugin gives minutely detailed accounts with illustrations of his churches up to the year 1842. But his most revealing autobiographical writing is to be found in "Some Remarks," published in 1850, which can be seen as essential for understanding the man and his collapse.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England HE revival of our ancient parochial church architecture is a subject which occupies much attention at the present time; after three centuries of demolition and neglect, the solemn structures raised by our Catholic ancestors are being gradually restored to somewhat of their original appearance, and buildings which but a few years since were considered as unsightly and barbarous erections of ignorant times, are now become the theme for general eulogy, and models for imita tion. To the English Catholic there is no class of religious edifices of greater interest than the ancient parish churches of this country. The are admirably suited to the present wants and necessities of the Church, nor is it possible to adopt, con sistently, any other models for the greater portion of our ecclesiastical buildings. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1850 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter 33. In this chapter we propose to explain the general form and arrangement of ancient churches and their furniture, which as before mentioned, is of far greater importance than mere detail: for of what use is good writing if the spelling be bad? or of what use is good spelling if the words have no sense in them? So a knowledge of detail in Architecture is of little worth, if the greater principles of combination be not thoroughly understood. The sin of modern Church Architecture in England until these last few years has not been in the badness of detail, for it has oft times been most pure, yet the building where it is found has been most wretched. It has consisted in the misapplication of those details; sometimes by copying them on too small a scale, thereby rendering them absurd, as. the building churches for dolls or cathedrals for babies: sometimes by misplacing them, as in putting windows well suited for a flank elevation in a western front, or a cathedral doorway in a village porch, and vice versa. When we consider what Architecture really is; that it implies not only the art of building well, but building beautifully and appropriately, we shall soon see that something beyond a mere correctness of detail is necessary to produce a perfect building. When we look abroad on the world and trace the hand of God in the vegetable, animal or mineral kingdom, it is not the beauty of form alone which the most enchants us;--it is not alone the peculiar suitability of each portion to do its particular work that engages our admiration; but it is the combination of utility with beauty which impresses us with wonder and awe, and which tells us in language not to be mistaken, " The hand that made us is divine." In creation beauty appears...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated account of the impact of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century finds that this fundamentally conservative movement provided the foundation for a new, influential aesthetic. With meticulous research and carefully chosen illustrations, Phoebe Stanton here explores the influence of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century, arguing that this fundamentally conservative movement provided a foundation for a new aesthetic. Examining the writings of the movement's leading proponents as well as a variety of important buildings, Stanton offers a comprehensive survey of the architectural principles and models that became most influential in America. She also confirms the importance of the Cambridge Camden Society, which provided the theoretical atmosphere and practical examples that helped to establish new standards of excellence in American architecture.

Book excerpt: This title explores the controversy surrounding the design of the new Foreign Office in London during Britain's Imperial heyday. In 1855 it was decided to build a new block of government offices in London, starting with the Foreign and War Offices. The government offices competition came at what was probably - looking back on it - the zenith of Britain's confidence as a nation and international power. One would expect the mid-Victorians to have felt, firstly, pride in their current national situation; and secondly, the urge to commemorate this in the most important national building to be projected in twenty years. Porter uses the debates surrounding the building of these important new monuments to interrogate the very fabric of British society, culture and nation building. The discussion on so many issues - religion, nationality, empire, history, modernism, truth, morality, gender - quite apart from considerations of 'pure' aesthetics, offers an unusual, perhaps even unique, insight into the relationship between these matters and the 'culture' of the time.
