Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prawns are recognized as a major delicacy for the table and in many parts of the world prawn fisheries have developed extensively during the last forty years. There is a need to develop identification technique for post larvae and juvenile of prawn/shrimp, which is easy and reliable. Such a technique would be useful for studying genetic variations of wild populations and in brood stock selection for intensive farming. In this book identification of major commercially important species is done from Mysis, Post larvae stages as well as adults. Identification using carapace and how to identify prawn/shrimp in field are also given. Identification of Mysis and post larvae are given using drawings of antinnuals, mandibles, maxillas, maxiliped, uropod and telson with their description. Identification of adults are given with their classification, scientific name, common name, distinguish characters, colour, maximum size, their distribution and drawings of species, petasma and thylecum. In some cases photographs and comparative characters of nearer species are also given. The subject is explained with the help of 535 drawings, colour photographs and 30 tables. In this book identification of 78 Marine water prawn and 28 freshwater shrimps totaling 106 prawn and shrimp species are given. The subject of the book is justified using more than 90 references. Different parameters like site selection, design and construction of culture pond, type of soil, stocking, feed nutrition requirement, feed preparation, method and quantity of feed distribution and major diseases in commercial cultured prawn/shrimp are given. Culture method in details of marine prawn as well as freshwater shrimp is given. Details of selection of prawn/shrimp species and ingredients of feed preparation considering local condition are also explained. In this book the requirement of syllabus for B.F.Sc and M.F.Sc. approved by I.C.A.R. is also looked into with respect to the subject of this book. This will help to students, teachers and research workers as well as the supervisors of prawn/shrimp culture farms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How language shapes and is shaped by identity is a key topic within sociolinguistics. An individual's identity is constituted through a variety of different factors, including the social, cultural and ethnic contexts, and issues such as bi- or multilingualism. In this introduction to Language, Culture and Identity Philip Riley looks at these issues against the theoretical background of the sociology of knowledge, and ethnolinguistics. He asks; how do we learn who we are, and what are the mechanisms that teach us this? Through an analysis of the importance of culture and interpersonal communication, Riley shows how social identities are negotiated. The second half of the book looks at issues of ethnicity and bilingualism, and the importance of a series of oppositions to 'others'. The idea of 'the foreigner' is central to this account, yet traditional views of the role of being socially 'other' largely neglect the role of language. Riley bridges this gap by examining specific and problematic aspects of multilingual identities. The book concludes by looking at some of the ways in which identities are being reconfigured, with particular reference to the notions of 'ethos' and the 'communicative virtues'. This engaging analysis of language and social identity will be essential reading for students of sociolinguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Book excerpt: Scholars of classical history and literature have for more than a century accepted `initiation' as a tool for understanding a variety of obscure rituals and myths, ranging from the ancient Greek wedding and adolescent haircutting rituals to initiatory motifs or structures in Greek myth, comedy and tragedy. In this books an international group of experts including Gloria Ferrari, Fritz Graf and Bruce Lincoln, critique many of these past studies, and challenge strongly the tradition of privileging the concept of initiation as a tool for studying social performances and literary texts, in which changes in status or group membership occur in unusual ways. These new modes of research mark an important turning point in the modern study of the religion and myths of ancient Greece and Rome, making this a valuable collection across a number of classical subjects.

Book excerpt: Being Kipling exposes Rudyard Kipling s identity as he himself perceived it through the lens of a collection of works composed over a period of years and brought together in the volume Land and Sea Tales for Scouts and Guides. Dillingham uses this extraordinary collection, ostensibly put together for the inspiration of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and frequently ignored by critics and biographers, to offer rare insight into formative events from Kipling s youth that shaped his personality and made him the man and writer that he became. The eight stories, eight poems, and three essays of Land and Sea Tales for Scouts and Guides are all examined closely both for what they reveal about Kipling s life and worldview and for their rarely perceived, but considerable literary merit.
