J. M. Miller' in a ten-year-old girl who had had measles, varicella, pertussis and tonsillitis. With the pertussis, buccal, nasal and aural hemorrhage occurred. The tonsillitis was followed by pain in the hands and feet. The present attack made its onset with chill, headache, and sore throat, followed by nausea and vomiting. Swelling and redness of the wrists, hands and ankles, then appeared followed by the state before mentioned. Erythema occurred after 61 tonsillotomies and adenoid removals by Wingrave.' The septic element could be ex cluded. The temperature never rose above The age limit was 14 months to 23 years. There were forty-five females and sixteen males. The eruption, which was poly morphous in type, did not desquamate and was chieﬂy on the head and back. It appeared on the second or third day after the operation and lasted from two to four days. Bohme describes the case of a boy with complete paralysis of the left leg and also of the right except that it could be flexed a very little at the hip. Likewise, there was paralysis of the rectal and vesical sphincters. The condition had existed for five years. The tendon reflexes were exaggerated; occasionally there were involuntary movements of the legs. On stroking the sole the hip and knee became flexed with dorsal flexion of the foot and toes, and this same coordinated reflex was obtained when the skin of the leg and of the lower abdomen was irritated. A strong stimulus caused flexion, a weak stimulus extension. The extension reflex is tonic, the limb remaining in the extended position even when it has been passively induced. The other leg became slightly flexed as the one leg became extended, and vice versa. When the flexion reflex is induced in one leg by strong irritation, extension occurs in the other. When the patient lies upon his back with both legs fully extended application of the electric current to the sole of one foot causes flexion of this leg, and a trifle later of the other likewise. Bohme suggests that these coordinated movements may be made use of in the treatment of the paralysis by eliciting coordinated movements instead of merely stimulating isolated muscles. Further Observations on the Cerebral Heat Centers. Previous experiments by Ernest Sachs and P. P. Green in stimulating the caudate nucleus faradically showed no temperature changes. Adamson.4 The patient, an attractive young woman, was not suspected by Adamson of hysteria. Her illness began with the unexplained appearance of patches of weeping eczema on the face. These continued to recur on the cheeks, forehead, neck, arms, and later thighs and legs despite treatment and covering with dressing. The crop never failed for a year, the condition being some times better, sometimes worse. In the initial stage there was an erythemous ﬂush which rapidly became moist, suppurated and healed with a crust. The eruption was often square or linear, sometimes round. A dermatol ogist consulted pronounced the case one of dermatitis herpetiformis. The patient went to a specialist without results. Another dermatologist regarded it as a case of dermatitis artefacta. The parents were skeptical; watch ing by a nurse failed. The patient was removed at length to a nursing home. Here three days after admission, a movement under the bedclothes led to the detection of the lady's hand holding most unsuspiciously a handkerchief, but in the handkerchief was a small ragged piece of pumice-stone! Thereupon this protracted dermatosis came quickly to a complete end. The patient later feigned hemoptysis and bowel obstruction, and was detected. H. F. Hansell,1 after examining Mariotte's spot in thirty seven eyes of emmetropes, eleven hyperopes and four myopes, finds that the distance from the center of the blind spot to the fixation point is a little longer in the right than in the left eye of emmetropes; in hyperopia the average distance is 3 mm. Longer in the left than in the right eye, while the longest and shortest distance is almost the same in each eye. In myopia the cases were so few that the aver ages may be misleading. In comparing the three varieties of refraction we find that the greatest as well as the shortest distance is found in myopia. The center of the blind spot is, with a few exceptions, below a horizontal line running through the point of fixation. The shape of the blind spot in emmetropia is oval, with the long diameter in the ver tical axis. In four of the cases the outlines were circular and in two the long axis was horizontal. This would seem to show that the optic disc is seldom circular, but, in the majority of cases, oval. In emmetropia the long diameter of the blind spot averages 31 mm.; in hyperopia, 34 mm.
