The very fact of prescribing for a disease by its name, instead of by the symptoms it develops, is an absurdity, and an allopath without a diagnosis of the disease before him - that is, a name for it - is as helplessly afloat as a ship in a gale of wind without compass or rudder. This is abundantly proved by the utterances of the champions of the old school. Such is the dictum of Dr. 0. W. Holmes, that if all the medicines in the world were thrown into the sea, it would be infinitely better for mankind and worse for the fishes.
