Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portraiture of Shakespeare Doubtless the chances are against the success of such attempts: but it is not difficult to see that in one respect at least they may be helpful and instructive. If we only consider what a bust or a portrait must be in order to express the form and favour' of a man at his best, we shall readily arrive at a principle, which, while it serves to explain that diversity of expression which is found in different copies from the same picture, to some extent justifies the attempt to recover a lost likeness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Portrait of Shakespeare: The Case of the Ely Palace Painting as Against That of the So-Called Droeshout Original Yet the main end in view was accomplished. When the unmistakable merits Of the Ely Palace portrait became known, they secured it a place among the few representations of Shakespeare that deserve the serious con sideration Of the student. It would not be necessary to revive so vexing a controversy, except for the fact that evidence has developed which throws new light on the difficult points at issue. Unfortunately this new evidence can only be made clear by reviewing the entire discussion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The first engraving of it of any merit was made while the picture was in Mr. Keck's possession in 1725, but the features were considerably altered, and the dress, instead of the original doublet, was a summer waistcoat, partially open down the front The head was reversed, as was frequently done by engravers at that period in making copies. Among the many copies of the picture was one by Sir Joshua Reynolds, but the whereabouts of it, if it be in existence, was not known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portraits of Shakespeare The list of books consulted in the preparation of this volume will give a fair idea of the mass of literature which has accumulated around the portraits of Shakespeare. Three books, however, stand prominently forth - Boaden's Inquiry, 1824, Wivell's Inquiry, 1827, and Friswell's Life Portraits, 1864. The excellence of Boaden's work is marred by its diffuse style. He seems to have endeavored to fill out his book by the insertion of matter which is foreign to his subject, and even in the discussion of the traits of a portrait his many words obscure his meaning. Wivell's book is a literary curiosity. He was evidently a wholly uneducated man, and his style is turgid in the extreme. He reprinted much of Boaden's material, but he also added interesting descriptions of portraits passed over by his predecessor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Grafton Portrait of William Shakespeare Aetatis Svae 24, 1588: With an Account of the Sack and Destruction of the Manor House of Grafton Regis by the Parliamentary Forces on Christmas Eve, 1643 The telling Of the following story has been prompted by the discovery Of a picture which the author, from evidence collected by him and set out in these pages, submits to be a genuine portrait of Shakespeare painted during his lifetime. The portrait has painted upon it an age 24 and a date the age corresponding with that of Shakespeare in the same year. An analytical comparison is made between this and other recognised portraits Of Shakespeare. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supposed Caricatures of the Droeshout Portrait of Shakespeare: With Fac-Simile of the Rare Print Taken From a Very Scarce Tract of an Elizabethan Poet "Though I deserve not, I desire The laurel wreath, the poet's hire." Thus sang quaint John Taylor, the Water-poet, who was Sailor, Sculler, Traveler, and Reporter, in the golden age of "Eliza and our James;" who for fifty years poured forth a remarkable collection of prose and verse, which is very little known outside the circle of those who delight in Elizabethan literature; and it may be truly said no other English author gives us more exact or curious information respecting the customs, buildings, rivers, inns, and manners of the people of that age than John Taylor. Yet in his voluminous works the magic name of Shakespeare is only once mentioned - namely, in his "Praise of Hemp-seed" where he tells us: "Spencer and Shakespeare did in Art excell." Could this have been written to refute what Ben Johnson had told Drummond of Horthornden in 1618 when he said: "Shakespeare wanted Art"? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition Illustrative of the d104 of Shakespeare's Plays: As Published in Edited Together With a Large Collection of Engraved Portraits of the Poet; New York; The Grolier Club; April 6-29, 1916 The Stratford Bust and the Droeshout Print, issued on the title-page of the First Folio, 1623, must ever remain the only portraits of Shake speare which have practically the endorsement of his contemporaries. Many others have been brought forward and have had their advocates. Engravings of many types and varieties are here exhibited, and it is believed that never before have so many engraved portraits of Shakespeare (over four hundred) been brought together. As is usual, the members of the Club have furnished most of the articles here exhibited, with the exception of several volumes of impor tance kindly contributed by the Library of Co lumbia University, acknowledgment of which is gratefully made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the Life of Shakespeare In the absence Of some very important and unexpected discovery, the general desire to penetrate the mystery which surrounds the personal history Of Shakespeare cannot be wholly gratified. Something, however, may be accomplished in that direction by a diligent and critical study of the materials now accessible, especially if deter mined care be taken to avoid the temptation Of endeavour ing to illustrate that history by his writings, or to decipher his character or sensibilities through their media. It is the more important to insist upon the latter conditions as necessary preliminaries, for so vivid is of ten the earnestness which he throws into the spirit Of a character that it would occasionally be all but impossible, unless a vigilant guard is entertained against such a fallacy, to doubt that what we read was not a purely intellectual emanation. A man's poetry, however, Observes the greatest Of modern bards, has no more to do with the every-day individual than inspiration with the Pythoness when removed from the tripod. Shakespeare's could have been no exception, for it must surely be admitted that the exchange of the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
