Book excerpt: Suzanne Peterson, the new kid yet again, hopes to fit in by joining the baseball team, but is shocked to find that, at her new junior high, only the boys have a team. There is no team for girls because there is no coach and that just the way it is. Suzanne appeals to her mother, who has no real love for baseball, but who does hate injustice. One fiery phone call later and the school has found a new coach. But Suzanne's struggle to build a new team is just beginning. The new coach, Mrs. Simmons, doesn't know the first thing about baseball and they don't have near enough players. Worse, the girl who could be the best, Mason, is planning to play for the boys. She's bitter and not playing for a bunch of hopeless girls. It does look hopeless until Suzanne befriends an ancient black man from the wrong side of the tracks. It turns out that the old guy who watches from his park bench, is none other than Clarence 'Porterhouse' Jackson, a baseball legend, who was barred from the Major Leagues because of the colour of his skin. Even worse, the best player on the boys' team is a total jerk, who decides to initiate Suzanne with a series of humiliating pranks, and a mocking challenge that the girls will never be able to beat the boys! Suzanne is not the kind of girl to back away from a challenge!

It's a place where false rumors are spread, even on washroom walls. Bullies seem to be everywhere, even on YouTube, and some of them are girls! It's definitely a place where snitches get stitches. Some of the teachers, like Mr. Tiburon, who never laughs, seem to be even meaner than the kids. Just when it seemed that things couldn't get any worse, Quinn gets an assignment that means he has to speak in front of the whole class. It might be the thing he fears most in life. Luckily, he's got some great people in his corner. There's his best friend, Keenan, always loyal, who laughs at all his jokes and is a great student too. He's got his new tutors, OnTime, who tells jokes and makes sure he's never late, and Vicky, who keeps him organized. She also believes that you have to face your fears. Facing his fears is not going to be easy at this school. There's a lot to be afraid of. Quinn is in for a lot of action and adventure!

Book excerpt: Conor grabbed the heavy boxing bag between his hands, squeezing it to keep it from moving. He set his feet and rammed his head into the bag so hard that you could hear it right across the weight room. He leaned back and rammed his head back into the bag, even harder than the first time. Then he did a rapid-fire series in quick succession, his head smashing into the bag with awesome power. His face went even redder, and he stopped and let go of the bag, his arms hanging by his side. He lifted his head and gasped for air. "The Irish Kiss." He gasped again. "If he's shorter than you, you aim for here." He reached over with his finger and poked the top of Looey's head. "Same height as you, you go for the nose." The same finger gave Looey a sharp rap on the bridge of his nose. Conor knew he was going to need this move and everything else he knew to win this battle. The fact that he'd become the leader of the Hands Gang pretty much by accident, to impress Stacey, the wild child, the beautiful rich girl, didn't matter now. What mattered was the Boulton Blood Crew was coming after him with everything they had. They didn't know that the Hands Gang only had three guys. They didn't need to know. All they needed to know was that they were in for the fight of their lives!

Book excerpt: The author of Why We Buy reports on the growing importance of women in everybody's marketplace--what makes a package, product, space, or service "female friendly." He offers a tour of the world's marketplace--with shrewd observations and practical applications to help everybody adapt to the new realities. Underhill examines how a woman's role as homemaker has evolved into homeowner; how the home gym and home office are linked to the women's health movement and home-based businesses; why the refrigerator has trumped the stove as the crucial appliance; why some malls are succeeding while others fail. "The point is," writes Underhill, "while men were busy doing other things, women were becoming a major social, cultural, and economic force." And, as he warns, no business can afford to ignore their power and presence--From publisher description.

Beef production in the United States had gone from small-scale, localized operations to a highly centralized industry spanning the country, with cattle bred on ranches in the rural West, slaughtered in Chicago, and consumed in the nation's rapidly growing cities. Red Meat Republic tells the remarkable story of the violent conflict over who would reap the benefits of this new industry and who would bear its heavy costs"--

Book excerpt: ______________________________ The 'endlessly funny' novel widely regarded as a classic of comic English literature Porterhouse College is world renowned for its gastronomic excellence, the arrogance of its Fellows, its academic mediocrity and the social cache it confers on the athletic sons of country families. Sir Godber Evans, ex-Cabinet Minister and the new Master, is determined to change all this. Spurred on by his politically angular wife, Lady Mary, he challenges the established order and provokes the wrath of the Dean, the Senior Tutor, the Bursar and, most intransigent of all, Skullion the Head Porter - with hilarious and catastrophic results.

Book excerpt: An obsessed detective on the trail on a murdered young woman finds more than he bargained for in this tale of hard-boiled cosmic horror, an inventive mash-up of the pulp detective story and Lovecraftian terror. Some say the war drove Robert Peaslee mad. Others suggest that given what happened to his father, madness was inevitable. He’s spent years trying to forget the monsters that haunt his dreams, but now has returned to witch-haunted Arkham to do the only job that he’s qualified for, handling the crimes other cops would prefer to never talk about. He’s the hero Arkham doesn’t even know it has. Megan Halsey is dead, her body missing. She might have been one of the richest young women in Arkham, but all that money couldn’t make her happy. Word on the street is that her mother split a long time ago, and Megan had spent a lot of her money trying to find her. Peaslee soon becomes obsessed with the murdered Megan. Retracing the steps of her own investigation, traveling from Arkham to Dunwich, and even to the outskirts of Innsmouth, he will learn more about Megan and Arkham than he should, and discover things about himself that he’d tried to bury. It’s 1928, and in the Miskatonic River Valley, women give birth to monsters and gods walk the hills. Robert Peaslee will soon learn the hard way that some things are better left undead.
